I haven't seen any change at all - people talk about it, people are fired for it, etc. But i have yet to actually see it. Let alone understand why they can't just print more money if its REALLY that bad.

Sidenote: This is in Australia at least.
Did you see what happened to Germany when they started printing money they didn't have?
Ooh! Ooh! I know this one!
The mark was devalued SO much, a loaf of bread cost roughly a wheelbarrow full of cash!
And children stacked them like building blocks!
yay history

I wouldn't think I did, but yes I have actually. I work in a supermarket, and the whole branch is feeling the recession in sales obviously. That means it's less busy in the store, which means that there is less work to do, which means that they cut down my hours from around 30 each week to around 20 each week. Sucks really, dad is pissed off about me not working enough.

I'm glad I'm not getting fired though, having less hours is better than having no hours at all, and finding a new job as a low-educated (dropped out of college twice, awful) young person sucks major donkey balls.

Not at all (or at least I've not seen any evidence of it, I think unemployment peaked somewhere around the 10% mark), even after 11 years of solidly (and stupidly, I might add) investing in the US economy (despite our own growing just as steadily) and the current governments brilliant cash handout (that saw the gambling industry increase profits by tenfold) we've somehow come out alright. I guess there are some benifets to being so isolated.[small]yay Australia[/small]

I've never actually felt affected by the recession at all. Even back in February myself and the staff that work with me were assured that our jobs wouldn't be affected. I still have my job, and apart from staff who left willingly so have my staff. My dad was affected because he's a tradesman, my partner even lent him $3000 so that he could do his tax. So indirectly we were, but directly we weren't.

Lost my job at the bank in August of '08. Worked a bunch of odd jobs until I could get back to college, been a full-time student since, and the economic stress was one of the causative factors in my divorce.

My city has 13.3% unemployment, I'm on the hook for all of my own support now, and if I drop out of school to try and work full-time I'll have $13,000 in debt come due with no degree to show for it and my hard work will be worth nothing.

So you tell me. You think the recession's affected me?

So we just recieved our second dreadful budget in two years in Ireland.

Nurses, police, the entire public sector is facing huge pay cuts. The Gardai (that's our police force) are threatening to go on strike and there's talk of riots and social discord.

All in a country that a few years ago was apparently the third wealthiest in the world.

Of course, our polititians still remain some of the highest paid scumbags out there, our prime minister earns more than the British and German leaders.

Have any Escapist members lost jobs or been affected by the global recession?

Nope. I sell booze, people aren't going to stop drinking anytime soon.
If anything you probably end up selling more.

I was able to get a job in this recession, not a very good one but a job nonetheless. I actually just got a raise today.
Nah, business is definately down. But it's down from manic, to steady. Can't complain, I get paid the same for doing less work than I used too.

Also since my dad took £2000 out my bank if I stay in the house any longer than I should he says it's coming off of that.

You too, huh? It's a great gig. I work for a municipal liquor store, so it's technically a government job too.
You guys should be profiting from it, if anything.
