A few years back, I was really into mangas/anime but I switched to european/american graphic novels.

But I kept some mangas in my library.

- Blame: The 1st collection I completed. Just for the complex architectural universe, this manga worth a read. I am dreaming of a HD movie based around the universe. Sidenote: I preferred the one-shot "noise" to BLAME. More grim, more gothic and the plot was more clear.

- Hellsing: I never finished it because I hated the creator's fascination for Sera's massive breasts but I loved side characters ( Anderson, Major, Walter, etc... ).

- Monster: By far the most trilling manga I've ever read ( I am surprised it hasn't been mentioned ). Exploiting the noire genre and set into the post WWII germany. It tells the story of a young and promising surgeon who made a life-changing decision: His first emergency of the day was a young boy who shot in the head. When he's about to operate, the hospital's director ( also the daughter of his fiance ) order him to perform instead on an important politician. Driven by his guilt, he chose to refuse and operate the boy.

Not only his professional and sentimental life got seriously screwed by this decision, the young boy grew up later to be a sociopath who's determined to set the county on fire...

Looks like you just listed the Madman anime catalogue. No offense :p - but don't worry, I see the exact same problem from the anime DVD selections in shops here in Australia - they (Madman in large part) only release series that the western audience understand and think will be popular. Nothing wrong with those you listed - it's just that everyone's most likely heard of all of them before.

Come ooon, can't we come up with something special that isn't on the limited western knowledge base of todays manga/anime?

My oldskool favourites: Hareluya II Boy, City Hunter :D.

On that note- there are fantastic chinese mangas all over the place, but of course- western japanophilia kind of makes it hard for anyone else to take the limelight and get any attention in your culture.

Oh, and I've been reading Noblesse - which is a Korean manga - it's format is a bit strange, but I really like the way it's been going and it updates every Monday I think.

Also- it's a vampire manga - which I never see the appeal of vampires, but these guys make the story much much easier to swallow.

i just read "Seven Ocean" and the ending made next to no sense but i almost cried anyway! an excellent manga if you dont have alot of time (just one volume)

to-love-ru is bloody hilarious! its about an alien called Lala and all the trouble she causes her unwilling human fiance with her insane inventions (bit of romance there too)

black cat, (same author as to-love-ru) is an action about a sweeper with near-super human marksman abilities

oh and if you havent read negima, seriosuly, drop whatever it is you're doing AND READ IT NOW!!! you could plan to die in the time it takes to read that manga and still not have anything better to be doing! its about a kid wizard who ends up teaching english at a japanese girls school

any other recommendations?
Gantz has a phenomenal story, will take a lot of time to read, and is still ongoing. Great story about a group of people who go on alien hunts using sci fi weapons. Also has lots of tits.

I just read a manga called Deadman Wonderland. It works as a science fiction/tragedy story. It's very well done and is still ongoing. Even better is that each volume is about 40-70 pages, so a lot goes on.

20th Century Boys is also a great manga to check out.

Darker Than Black has a cool drawing style and science fiction element, and is already made into an anime.

Hellsing is a fun one to read as well, you should have at least heard about it by now.

Also by the same author of Hellsing is this new series called Drifters. It's a fantasy story mixed in with a lot of historical figures like Hannibal and Rasputin. This is ongoing as well.

Give any of these a chance and for sure you'll love one of them. Definitely recommend Gantz first, it still is one of my favorite mangas.

I never got really into One Piece because when I want absurd, I watch Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo but I recently discovered than one of the character ( can't remember his name, the blond guy who's smoking all the time ) is a master chef and that complete episodes are dedicated entirely to cooking.

As a professional cook, that gently tickles me and I am looking for more "Iron-chefesque" episodes but since this anime/manga is so massive, I lost hopes of finding all the sweet sweet cooking action.

Any pointers ?

you know what. just beacause I love to say it
My Balls, it's a manga about the queen of hell coming to take over earth due to a contract made with heaven. angels decide to take advantage of a loophole in that contract by sealing her away but they mess up and she is sealed inside the main protagonist's testicle. so now our hero is forced to not ejaculate for a full month until the deal become void.
yes this series is real.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Balls
and it is AWESOME
note: large amounts of nudity but it's meant to be a parody of hentai so what did you expect?

Here it is, the list of the manga I could recall off the top of my head; pardon the wall of text:

1)BLAME!: Easily one of the best stories I've ever 'read'. Be wary of some gore in some places. It's set in the future and is full of win. Use your imagination; it'll help.

2)Otoyomegatari: I love this story; and thoroughly look forward to each chapter released. Set in the late 1800's? (Don't blame me it's late.) It follows a young newly wed wife in what amounts to an arranged marriage: it works out nicely and the story goes along at a nice pace. It's really interesting too, and the freaking artwork! O_O

3)1/2 prince: Priceless parody.

4)+Anima: One of my personal favorites. That goat cheese looked sooo good.

5)Bleach: Whitening. A manga most people either like, or hate; akin to Naruto in popularity, but at least this one explains magical clothe regeneration.

6)The Ravages of Time: It's slow, but once you get into it, it's actually fairly interesting.

7)Sketchbook: ^_^ Those little drawings at the start of each chapter would make wonderful bookmarks don't you think? Anyways I like this manga. It's kind of a dry humor approach to life and the various odd quirks therein. More geared to a Japanese populace, but is certainly still enjoyable elsewhere.

8)The Breaker: Just read it; you'll probably thank me.

9)The Breaker: New Waves: When you're done reading The Breaker, start reading this one.

10)Toriko: Hilarious food manga; yes that's right: food manga.

11)Soul Eater: Mixed opinions on this one; worth at least checking out.

12)Gantz: Another gore one, read at your own risk. I like the SPOILER?, serious sci fi setting.

13)Kekkaishi: Um...ya just check it out, I'm actually not really fond of it, but I've already read several hundred chapters so I just keep going. (shrugs)

14)Nurarihyon No Mago: Ya....I recommend reading at least twenty chapters before you decide on this one. In the end I decided it wasn't for me, but I still follow it regardless.

15)Claymore: Funky.

16)Kuroshitsuji: Nice butler manga. Check it out, it could certainly be worth your time.

17)Break Blade: I do not favor the turn of events in the latest chapters; otherwise...fairly good.

18)Gamaran: Uh...can't think of anything to say about this one; Hax feudal weapon manga.

19)Ao No Exorcist: I'm atheistic and I love this manga.

20)Cage of Eden: Made me go: WTF? Read at your own discretion: it's survival-horror-mystery-whatever.

21)Bio-mega: if you can handle the gore I suppose; it may be worth your time. I did like it though, just not really all the gore.

22)Tower of God: ...It's...odd?

23)Ubel Blatt: I like it. Can be a tad bloody though...has some rape scenes if I recall and of course murder and killing. Ya I like this one though.

24)ULTIMO: Where is chapter 16?! I recommend this one; nice artwork too. Just read it for a while, you'll catch on. It also helps to remember the 'dolls' are simply advanced automatons(borderline sentient).

25)Yureka: Weird...could be worth your time to check out; similar setting to 1/2 prince but not as good.

26)Zombie-Loan: I stopped reading this manga. I did however, favor the artwork and the story itself wasn't too shabby.

27)Noblesse: I love this humor so much. Vampire manga, don't let that turn you away though, that would be inelegant.

28)Painting Warriors: Artwork a tad on the rough ink side, but that's not necessarily a bad thing; the story itself could leave one desiring more though.

29)Spice and Wolf: Has a significant body of pornography, not in the manga mind you(I just happen to be aware of it) The story itself is fairly interesting though...if you like business in an earlier era.

30)Akaboshi - Ibun Suikoden: The ending seems to simply cut off. Took me a bit to realize that was actually the end; fairly good though.

31)Azumanga Daioh: Eight years ago I found a lost book of this manga in an unused locked room at my school, piled under boxes. As such it does hold a special place in my mind; the story itself isn't too bad, and their volume is extensive. (Also has a significant pornographic following)

32)Blade of the Immortal: An interesting take on a few aspects of the human condition. More than a few of the events in this story have made me question whether to simply jump ahead of them. Not for the pure minded/light stomached. There is graphic torture-rape-murder involved; you have been thoroughly warned.

33)Buster Keel: Come on when's the next chapter coming out? Dragon-ape manga.

34)Death-Note: I actually do not like this manga and have no intention of reading it. Many people do like it though, and so I decided to include it. That said, I love L's character. The L diet indeed.

35)Fairy Tail: Full of magical happenings, some parts of the story lag pretty bad by contrast of the high points, and I still have no idea where it's going, but it's good.

36)FLAGS: An intense game of capture the flag.(not really.) Worth checking out though.

37)Historys Strongest Disciple Kenichi: This is good; really good; funny too. Magical martial arts manga with super powers bordering on Dragon Ball Z power level. Yabba-dabba-doo!

38)Jackals: Another good one; full of great big sword wielding goodness. Main character likes throwing around an alligator. ^_^ (Yes there's murder etc.)

39)Inuyasha: I preferred the anime. Still, can certainly be worth your time; note that the story is completed and is quite large. Set in feudal era demon filled Japan. Bonus: Has the ending you're looking for. ;)

40)K-ON: Another large pornographic following, this manga could be interesting if you're into teenage bands/school/stuff.

41)Legend of Tyr: Only recently found this manga myself. I highly recommend it. Steampumk mixed in? How odd. It's good, and I like the artwork.

42)Immortal Regis: This is how manga are supposed to be made. Great story; Great artwork; Minimal plot holes; a rare find indeed. The story takes place around now, and then you're in an alternate dimension and the fun really starts. (Read this one BEFORE Cavalier of The Abyss)

43)Cavalier of The Abyss: Sequel to Immortal Regis. Cavalier of The Abyss picks up where Immortal Regis lets off; in that it will make you question whether or not you're reading two completely unrelated manga. Don't worry, the confusion will end soon. I'm still not sure how the author is going to manage having the main character fit his new role, given our knowledge of him in Immortal Regis...will be most interesting. (Read this one AFTER Immortal Regis)

44)Rurouni Kenshin: A classic that has weathered well. If you're going to get into mangas with swords involved then start here. Great story; nice artwork. (Can you swing your sword so fast it appears as though it's going in nine different directions at once? I didn't think so.)

45)Full Metal Alchemist: Incidentally you have to say the title of this manga with intensity. I recommend everything. The manga, the movies, the anime. Wonderful. You don't come across stories like this often.

46)AIKI: Has some funny stuff. It's a fighting manga, with a generally humorous view. Too bad that happened to him at such a young age; I realize what his father was trying to teach him, but I could never forgive anyone for that.

47)Ghost in the shell: I do not really recommend the manga, so much as the anime and movies. If you're going to watch anime though, then don't miss this one.

48)Hellsing: This is a really great, BLOOD, BLOOD EVERYWHERE! Ahem, what was I saying? Oh right, I recommend blood with your blood on some bloody blood blood blood, why does two o's make an 'u' sound? wouldn't that be: Blewd? Anyways Hellsing...ya, it's bloody. If you're lazy watch the anime, otherwise I recommend reading it.

Now for a few that aren't technically manga but I decided to include anyways:

http://www.Drowtales.com Check it out, it's a site I've been following for quite a while and I like it. Nice artwork too.

http://www.DresdenCodak.com Another great one; I definitely recommend this.

http://www.Threepanelsoul.com Also see their earlier site: http://www.machall.com Fantastic; enough said.

http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic+index Do it. Do it now or you'll regret it.

The only additions i can really make are Vagabond (the life story of one of Japan's most prolific swordsmen, Miyamoto Musashi), and Ichi the Killer/ Koroshiya 1. The latter is easily the most violent and depraved thing I've ever read, though it did have sublime artwork and a surprisingly well written storyline. I found it and pretty much had to read the whole thing in one night. It's decently long, so if anybody's looking for an interesting read, check it out.

Some others are the Battle Royale manga, Air Gear, Uzumaki, Bleach, One Piece, and Eyeshield 21.

Naruto (I know what you thinking not naruto again... but to me it flowed better in manga form)
D.Gray man (It is still ongoing, long past the crap anime ending)
fairy tail (if you like one piece this should work for you too)
Kuroshitsuji ( nice time saver)
Hellsing (blood,blood and more blood)

I will defend the first three arcs of Bleach (volumes 1-20) as some of the best shounen manga in existence.

After that, you can all say what you want.

What else? Well, Shoujo Sect is obviously a literary masterpiece. *clears throat*
