Rochelle listened to the short exchange between Damian and Tyler. According to the Team Rocket member, the place was about to blow...

"Are you people crazy?" she cried as she ran with the two, having called Iskra back to his ball so he wouldn't fall behind, which he could have given the speed at which the group was moving. "You would kill hundreds, no, thousands of Pokémon and people in, on or around the mountain! And the possibilities for destruction beyond that... Forget what I said earlier. You people are fucking insane."

That was the fourth time in Rochelle's life that she had used a swear-word; she blushed faintly when she finished speaking, closing her mouth and concentrating on the run thereafter. She usually reserved words such as that for situations when no others would do. This was one of those situations.

Damian was trying to talk as he was sprinting. It was hard for someone at his age, but he was keeping a good pace ahead of the youngsters. "Right...maybe I was exaggerating a bit there...but trust me, they got this place wired to be...sealed off in case too many intruders...were spotted...so we got 10 minutes to get out to the main trail...or we'll be trapped in here...for a good while...unless one of you kids...has a Pokemon that can Dig..." He looked back for a second and got blank looks, or so he reckoned. "That's what I thought."

They were on the ground and running hard now. The three were covering much more ground than than Damian though possible. He could see the others ahead. "Kimmy!" he shouted. "Get your blooming ass off the ground and get the fuck out of here! She's blowing!"

[hr]

Kimmy was still on the ground, Jordan was poking at her with her feet. "Hey broette? You all right down there?"

"Mmmmmff" was all she mumbled. She was having trouble getting up.

"Huh, Rochelle's Pokemon do something to you, or something?"

Kimmy! Get your blooming ass off the ground and get the fuck out of here! She's blowing!"

"MMF?" Kimmy slowly tried to get up, but time and electricity were not on her side. She was still feeling the after-effects.

"We have to go now!" Damian shouted as he ran past the others. "Code 86!"

"Fuck! Ugh, my makeup and stuff is in there! Damn it, Jean-Simon!" She stumbled forward, trying to shake off the shocks but despite her best efforts, moving was tough. "Damian wait! I can't run!"

The others had already started to run when Damian called, except for Jordan, who was still trying to grasp the situation, when he heard Kimmy's complaint. "Here broette, hop on. I can run for you." He lifted Kimmy onto his shoulders, holding onto her legs with his arms. Vicky was not content at giving up her perch but she couldn't do much about it. "OK, so where are we running?"

"Anywhere but here, idiot! Move!" Kimmy tried to give an encouraging smack but her limited mobility prevented it. "Follow everyone else!"

"Right!" Jordan took off running, now lagging behind everyone else as they tried to make their escape out of the tunnel.

Aeris looked behind her and ran back towards Jordan. "Here, I'll give you a helping hand!" She put an arm around Jordan's shoulders to help him run faster. Together, she ran with him towards everyone else.

Blaze ran in front of Aeris, Jordan and Kimmy to help them see better ahead in the cave. "If you want, I can help carry her with you!" Aeris said to Jordan as they ran.

"It's OK Red," Jordan said. "I think I can get her. Let's just, like, go, I guess."

The group hurried down the pathway, Damian leading the way as he frantically looked for the tell tale signs that he would live to down another pint. Finally he saw the dim light at the end of the tunnel. The good lights. "There we go, almost home free 'ere! Just up to the main path!"

As the group stampeded past the threshold leading back to the main path, a loud bang was heard behind them, followed by a rumble. It sounded like a weak earthquake that would have sent the weaker city folk flying to the hills, but it resulted in a loud thud behind the people. A cloud of dust exploded out, enveloping everything in it's path.

Damian coughed loudly as the debris started to settled. Jean-Simon's contingency plan had effectively sealed off the cavern and everything inside that hadn't made it to an escape pod. "Haha, made it! Take that ya greasy frog bastard! Can't pull that shit on me!" He looked around. It looked like everyone had made it out, even Kimmy, who he had pretty much left for dead. "Right then, my deal's done. Best for me to get the hell out of here."

"Damian! What about me!" Kimmy whined. "I still can't really move!"

"Not my problem anymore, love. I'm getting out of here while the getting's good, and if your smart. and that's a big if, you'll do the same. I'm not staying with a group that thinks me a lamb to be slaughtered whenever it's easiest. I'm hitting the road." He turned to the group. "Right, just keep going down this path, it'll take you all out of the mountain. See you lot...hopefully never." With that, Damian took off back towards Pewter City.

Kimmy remained sitting on the ground. "Ugh this sucks!" She turned to Jordan and Aeris. "Why did you even bother saving me! I'm going to be thrown into jail and it's going to suck! Why?"

Fary had similar thoughts. "Yeah, why did we bring her out?"

Jordan shrugged. "I dunno, I couldn't like just leave her in there, you know? Like that would have been evil and stuff. I don't want to be evil." He turned to the exit. "Anyway, we can like, go, right?"

Mika nodded. "Yes. Let us leave. Cerulean City should be just down the road from the exit."

[hr]

After following the path that Damian had indicated for a half an hour or so, sunlight started to break into the cave. Soon after that, the eight travelers emerged from the mountain. Jordan held up his hand to block the low-hanging sun from his eyes, but he should have been more worried about the creature flying into his head behind him.

Vicky was trying to get in as much shadow as possible. Zubitbit! Sunlight sucks! Blech!

Jordan reached in his pocket for Vicky's ball. "You not liking this, little broette? OK, um, in you go then I guess." He returned Vicky to the safe darkness of the Pokeball and continued looking out from the high ground. Cerulean City was quite visibile in the distance. The shimming waters surrounding it made it sparkle like a sapphire. "Hey, so let's go, eh? I'm starving!" Intent on securing food, he bolted down the hills towards the city, the rest of the group following.

"Oh, finally," Rochelle murmured to herself as she shielded her eyes from the sunlight, looking down at the shining waters of Cerulean City. It took her a while to adjust properly to the much brighter natural lighting; spending time cooped up in near-pitch-blackness of supply closets was not the best way to go adventuring in caves and mountains.

Then out of nowhere she let out a fairly large yawn, quickly realising the source of it. That flaming Sleep Powder that Kimmy's Gloom had used on her... her regular sleep cycle was off. The adrenaline that had helped her get through the Team Rocket encounter was also wearing thin, what with the lack of imminent danger or the need to do a fair bit of running. Rochelle found a small patch of grass and sat down for a bit. She could easily catch up with the others soon enough. A short rest can't hurt, she reasoned as she set her gear down and rested her head in her hands, partially stifling another yawn but failing to prevent its escape.

"One more bite should do it Hughes!" called out Eileen as she jotted down the final move of the battle in her notebook, watching as her Growlithe launched itself towards the Slowpoke and bit it. Youngster Dan let out a cry as his Slowpoke fell over once the Growlithe had let go, returning his slow, pink pokemon back into it's pokeball with a sad look of defeat on his face.

"I have to say that was a interesting rematch Dan. By my math your new strategy, if it would have hit Hughes, would have done a quarter more damage than your original one," Eileen told the young child as she reviewed the data in her notebook. She quickly showed Dan the pages that their battles were on before putting the book and pen inside her coat pocket. "All in all you've improved the most out of the rest of the people I've re-battled. You should be proud of that!" she told Dan who muttered something about how he wanted to win as he dug through his pocket and handed a few dollars to Eileen.

"Maybe next time kiddo. Alright, who's next to battle!?" she called out proudly, looking at the other trainers on Route 25. The trainers she hadn't re-beaten for that day quickly hid behind some trees and bushes, their pokemon quickly following them. She sighed in disappointment, watching Dan as he made his way to the bridge to go and heal his pokemon like the other trainers had done earlier that day. "I think this might be all for the day Hughes," she muttered to her Growlithe who happily sat down next to his owner, "You don't seem to care. Hmm, maybe we'll move the schedule ahead a little bit and battle Misty tonight. What do you think?"

Groww! Hughes barked, looking up at his owner.

"What do you think Alan? Battle Misty tonight instead of tomorrow? If we head back now we'll have a number of hours for rest and to finish preparing," she told the dark-haired man that she had been traveling with who had been watching the battle.

Aeris stretched a bit when they were out of the cave. "I think that went fairly well. No one got hurt, everyone is happy again." And I got a fossil! Just need to get it to Cinnabar. That will have to wait until later. She was feeling very good and held Mika's hand while they walked towards Cerulean City.

That is, until she saw all the water around. Her knees felt weak and she started shivering a little. "N-not water..." She was non too happy about that, staying beside Mika to have him between her and the water. "Don't worry, you'll be alright, my dear." Mika tried to reassure her. She felt a little calmer, but still didn't want to go near the water. "L-lets just s-stay away from it..."

She tried to focus on getting to the Poke Center, since her Pokemon would need healing after all the fighting in the mountain. She and Mika entered it, and gave their Pokemon over to Cerulean's Nurse Joy. "Have a seat while we heal them up." she told them. They sat down nearby and shared a kiss. She felt calmer inside the Poke Center, with almost no water in sight. There was a small fountain in the middle, but she wasn't near it. She rested her head on Mika's shoulder, who had his arm around her shoulders.

Alan had been transcribing everything that was said and done in short hand as the battle had gone on. He had left his Totodile and Beedrill outside their pokeballs to watch the match while he did his writing.

"Honestly, it's your story not mine so I'm okay with whatever you want to do. I'll appreciate being given the time to translate this out of shorthand though to get ready for the next installment. Will also have to take the time to eventually get a short interview out of you and maybe call up your other opponents if I have the time." He said as he put the pen and paper back in his pack, seeing the lone badge that sat there.

All this time and only one badge and a minor column. Well at least Eileen is proving to be a winner so far. Already moving up in pages, hopefully it will continue. He closed the bag before walking over to her. His Beedrill was already chasing his Totodile back and forth as he did all of this.

Drill! Spike said as he flew closely behind the smiling and running Totodile.

Totodile! was the reply from Croc as he turned around and playfully shot a small stream of water at Spike.

"Alright you two, you can play once we get back to town. Remember to get some rest before going to the gym tonight though." Alan told them.

Tyler was beyond relieved to be finally out of the cave. Between their encounter with Team Rocket and a frantic dash out of the mountain to avoid explosions, this day was by far the most interesting day of his life - not to mention the most exhausting. Finding a nice patch of grass, he set his backpack aside and collapsed onto the ground laying on his back. "Ugh...thank God we're-oof!"

The deceptively heavy Tank bounced off Tyler's chest like a springboard and happily ran circles in the grass. He was happy to have a little fresh air, that was for sure. Tyler, on the other hand, had to wait a second to catch his breath. Inhaling deeply, he let out a slightly strained laugh. Although painful, it was kind of funny.

"Hey...hey...you watch it there, mister," he said to Tank in a faux authoritative tone.

The Nidoran simply laughed and continued its victory lap, circling around his Trainer.

"I've seen you translate pretty fast so I imagine that a couple of hours will be enough for you. Not sure if the other trainers I battled will want to relive those fights though," Eileen replied with a light chuckle, turning to Hughes who was eying some berries in a bush. "You ready to go boy!?" Eileen said in an excited, high-pitched voice, clapping her hands against her legs as the Growlithe bounded from the bush to her happily. He ran around her and Alan in circles and barked as she tried to pet him before running off to the bridge, turning around and waiting for her to follow.

"Two seconds Hughes," she called out to him as she went over to her messenger bag that she had left on the ground, picking it up before hearing some rustling in the bushes near her. She looked up to see a bright glint of something shiny in the rustling bushes before it all grew still around her. "I swear I'm being watched," she muttered, eying the bushes once more before jogging over to Hughes who dashed off down the bridge.

"That may be very true, but you'd be surprised by what you can get by telling them their name will be in the paper." He said with a laugh as he kept up with her. His own two pokemon right next to him.

"As for the translation, it won't take that long. Just hope I'll have enough time to do that as well as send it in in time for the editor." He missed the line about feeling like she was being followed so he didn't reply to it.

"People will do a lot for their fifteen minutes," Eileen replied, doing stop-and-go running exercises with Hughes down the bridge. When she first began her journey she would have Hughes doing numerous exercises each day along with a quota of battling pokemon and trainers, but she found herself needing to join him in the exercises to raise up her own physical abilities to even keep up.

'And each day he just keeps improving whilst the gap between us grows,' she thought to herself as she sprinted behind the young pokemon, wishing that she could show as much improvement as him. She thought about taking a breather at the end of Nugget Bridge, but decided it could wait until the Poke Center in Cerulean. She told Hughes that they were done with exercises for now and the Growlithe trotted over to her to fall in line with her own pace.

"I hope dinner tonight isn't macaroni and cheese again. All that cheese has been making me wheeze at night," she said to Alan, waiting for him to join up with them before continuing to the Poke Center. As they walked inside they was greeted by Nurse Joy, the one constant while they stayed at the center. Other trainers had come and gone while Eileen and Alan stayed in the city, and even now Eileen eyed a few more sitting over away from the fountain. After a moment she figured that she was already going to battle Misty tonight, and that there was no need to challenge new trainers at the time.

"Hello Nurse Joy," she told the nurse, Hughes jumping up onto the counter and barking his own greeting.
"And hello to both of you. I see you both were doing some running recently. Does Hughes need any healing?" Nurse Joy asked cheerfully, petting the energetic puppy pokemon.
"No I believe he's completely fine. The rematches we did caused no injuries. I was wondering if I could borrow one of the grooming kits though," Eileen asked the nurse, getting a 'yes' and being handed a grooming case from the nurse. Eileen thanked Nurse Joy before heading over to an empty area of the Center; taking a seat next to Hughes and picking up a brush from the case to use.

Aeris noticed a girl and a boy walk into the Poke Center with a Growlithe. She took immediate interest in it since she knew it was a Fire type Pokemon. She didn't want to bother the two of them, though. She and Mika were called upon to pick up their healed Pokemon. They stood up and walked over to Nurse Joy, taking their Pokeballs with their Pokemon and thanked the Nurse.

Aeris kissed Mika and told him she'd be there for a moment longer. He told her it was alright and walked out of the Poke Center after kissing her again. She waved after him, then walked over to the girl and the boy with the Growlithe. "Uhm, excuse me. I don't mean to interrupt, but I was a bit interested in your Growlithe. Fire types do that for me." She gave a small nervous chuckle, not sure if she was bothering the girl and the boy. "Oh, where are my manners? My name is Aeris."

Hughes sat still as Eileen brushed his coat, getting any dirt and loose hairs off of it with a few strokes. His ears perked when he heard footsteps coming towards himself and his owner, turning his head that way to see a young woman with red hair walking towards them. He immediately moved in between his owner and the the woman, getting an intimidating look on his face as he growled at her.

"Hughes, stop. Come back over here and sit," Eileen ordered in a stern voice. Hughes immediately stopped growling and his expression eased up, and he walked back over to Eileen and sat down (keeping an eye open to watch the red-haired lady though). "He always does that. He's quite overprotective; ask Alan over there. Hughes was ready to use ember on him the first time they met," Eileen told the woman as she stood up, extending out the hand not holding a brush to the young woman, "Eileen Weismann."

"It's true. Luckily Croc was out of his ball so he didn't try anything more than growling for a while. As she said though my name is Alan, nice to meet you." As soon as he had mentioned Croc's name the Totodile ran out in front of him before running up to Aeris and staring up at he quizzically. Spike has instead chosen to hover in front of his owner just in case the newcomer tried anything.

Aeris shook hands with Eileen. "It's very nice to meet you, Eileen and Alan." She was prepared to say something else, but she kinda froze up at the mention of a croc. She knew it had to be something water based. She looked down at the little Pokemon. What would it do? Squirt water at her? She wasn't sure what it'd do. She didn't want to show her weakness in front of other people, but it was unavoidable. She ran to behind Eileen, keeping her between Aeris and Croc, shivering. She accidentally dropped Blaze's Pokeball and freed her out of it. The Charmeleon saw the new people, and new Pokemon. She wasn't as afraid of water Pokemon as her Trainer, but Croc wasn't her main focus, but the Growlithe was. "Char!" she said to Hughes, holding out a hand like Eileen had done earlier.

After a few moments of rest, during which time she began to doze occasionally, Rochelle sat up properly and saw that most of the group was already gone. Aeris, Mika, Jordan and Fary were already heading for the city, some faster than others. Before she joined them, though, it couldn't hurt to stay a while longer. She was tired...

The next thing Rochelle knew, she was lying on her side in the grass, her pack weighing her down and making it difficult to get up. There was a fairly large chlorophyll stain on her cheek from the grass, giving her a somewhat Christmas-y colour scheme when combined with the small blood line that was there from hitting her head on the cavern floor. "Ah, hell," she mumbled, forcing herself to her feet. She had fallen asleep; thankfully it was only for a couple of minutes judging by her Pokégear, which she had returned to its rightful place on her wrist. She needed to find a decent bed soon and sleep off the day's events.

Before she started on her way down to Cerulean, Rochelle looked around to see if anyone else had the same idea. It looked like all the others were preoccupied with their own distractions, so she started off alone. It didn't look like it was too far to the city, though she did have to navigate her way around a few ledges and pathways that were part of the hillside. Sticking to the path, and the simple act of repeatedly putting one foot in front of the other, helped keep Rochelle awake.

Croc was confused by the action, and opted to walk back over to its trainer.

Dile? Totodile? It asked Alan.

"I think she's afraid of you boy." With that he turned to Aeris.

"He's harmless really. The worst he would do is lightly bite or squirt a bit of water at you to get you to chase him. Croc is actually very nice and fun loving once you get to know him."

"Uh it's nice to meet you too," Eileen replied as Aeris ran behind her to use as a shield. She quickly grasped the situation and said, "Hey Alan I don't think that telling her he's nice will work. Maybe you should keep him back for a bit or something until she gets used to him."

Hughes watched the trainers and their pokemon intently, making sure to keep an eye out for any sign that they might try to harm his owner. The sudden movement of a Charmeleon drew his attention, and he watched as it reached out it's claw to him. It eyed the pokemon warily, sniffing it a few times and looking over at it's trainer for reassurance (which it got with a slight nod). Once it got that it barked once and lifted it's own paw to touch the Charmeleon's before putting it back down on the ground and seeing what it would do next.

Aeris couldn't say a word. She kept her head down so she wouldn't need to look at the Totodile and just kept shivering. She felt like crying because she was making a fool out of herself, but no tears were visible since she managed to keep them away.

Blaze saw that Hughes was alright and probably wouldn't hurt Aeris. It didn't seem to be a wild one. She, like her trainer, liked hugs, so she gave one to the Growlithe, then walked back over to Aeris to try and calm her down. The only way she knew how to was by hugging her leg, which was what she did. Aeris shivered a little less and almost smiled at having Blaze near her.
