The Saddest Moment In A Game

My thoughts exactly, can't think of a more gut wrenchingly horrible moment in a game.

I know, it upset and disturbed me in a way I'd never experienced in the medium. Props to Valve for managing such an emotional moment with polygons, although I still wish that things could be different.

I can't wait to bury my crowbar in that advisor...

Seeing the noblest of heroes, volunteer himself to rid the universe of the Zerg Overmind. Watching him slowly approach the Zerg Overmind with his pained loving expression in his eyes before sacrificing himself to not only save his race but ours.

Garrett's love and respect for Viktoria was cut before it fully blossomed.

Half-Life 2: Episode 2

Alyx had already lost her mother at an early age and witnessed her planet invaded, her people oppressed and billions of them killed all as a child.

Eli had already lost his leg to the evil monstrousities and wife. Yet he still kept fighting for what he loved. He was not only Alyx's father but the father for the struggle of freedom on Earth.

After Eli expresses how he wouldn't be prouder of you if you were his own son, they share a tender moment. Then they have to say good bye again.

Alyx had to lose another parent and witness it all. Eli's last act was one of love to protect his only child and the safety of the world.

I can't say definitively because my memory sucks, but I'm playing through Persona 3 FES at the moment, and (not wishing to spoil anything) it's got a few moments that made my eyes get misty, particularly one death at the middle-of-the-game turning point.

The thing that makes this particular moment so unique is that the really heartrending part is how the characters are affected by the death after it happens.

I've played P3, I know exactly what scene you're talking about. It is indeed dramatic stuff, which is why I loved that game so much.

If you were saddened that DNF wasn't going to be made, then I hope you dont have pets or family members because when they die its going to destroy you.


Incidentally some of my favorite sad scene's are as follows.

In Final Fantasy VIII, when Rinoa is taken, and put into Sorceress Stasis on the space station. The scene when you rescue her, and then escape onto the Ragnarok is pretty damn emotional... brings tears to my eyes.

Resident Evil 2: Aya died. I was sad.

Much more I cant think of this early in the morning.

Sadness? I was to busy jumping for joy after my perfect headshot of one of the guards and the guy.

I will agree that COD4 had a wonderful ending, but not really sad, more like a realistic view of war (i.e. you will loose friends and comrads).

I have to say that I was moved by the scene between Dom and his wife in Gears 2. I know... Gears 2 with a moving story (not the whole story, just that part), surprised me.

I realize portable gaming usually gets overlooked in serious gaming discussions, but I wanna say Pheonix Wright: Trials & Tribulations when *SPOILERS* the convict kills himself, when Maya goes missing (I really thought she was dead) and Godot's tear of blood.

And on a different note, most of Lost Odyssey's short stories, which are the best I've ever read and should be published or viewable online.
