"Oh Lighten Up"

This phrase usually follows some type of disconcerting sociopath/psychopath's event. Example:

A: "Dude, making fun of suicide or trying to make someone kill themselves is really, really bad."

B: "Oh, lighten up."

number two: Vitun Huora (it's my native language Finnish)
My super detective skills lead me to guess that Huora probably means whore. Am I right?
Your super detective skills are really super!
"Vittu" is basically the female genitalia but I think "Fucking Whore" would be the best way to refrase it into English. But there's something about Finns reacting to this phrase.

"Stop acting so childish"
I agree. My usual response is "The day I am no longer childish is the day I realise I have been fully indoctrinated by society. It is also the day I kill myself".

One of my main sensitive phrases is if anyone refers to me as a "consumer". I find this term deeply offensive. I am a person with hopes, dreams, desires, fears, aspirations, skills, relationships and hobbies. I am not a mindless wallet of legs ready to vomit money over whoever has the gaudiest advertising.

Most hated phrase? Anything involving politics are religion are generally a no no to strangers. So I guess saying something about "Fags and those towel headed terrorist are both destroying our Christian values." would be the most destructive phase I could think of. But I rarely have heard anyone actually say it. (Yes I said rarely)

I guess in my personal experience the phrase that affects me the most is "Man up". Next to most guys where I live I come off a bit feminine. I wear clothes that match, I keep my nails nice, conditioner in my hair, I shave often, and make sure I smell nice. I'm also quite skinny.

This type of man in the South doesn't always end well. I look frail and weak. So I get man up talks frequently. It grows old. No, I don't want to drink myself into a coma, no I wont tell my wife to "Shut the fuck up and make me a sandwich". No, I wont watch sports, its dull to me. And just because I'm good with a gun doesn't mean I want to hunt.

Sigh...

Of course I don't think rape is natural or good (at least for humans, I'm sure there's some animal that just goes for it out there). I do think, however, that making a joke isn't evil at all, it certainly doesn't make me "slightly behind in evil the person who commits the crime" because that is trivializing rape. Making jokes about it isn't a social problem that needs to be tackled, treating it like victims of it need to be protected like a little bird that's fallen out of a tree is.

I just happen to be of the mindset that if something is important enough that you should be taking it seriously then you shouldn't take it seriously, it just isn't fun that way. Being there for a victim and helping them is cool, but treating rape like it's the very essence of the devil and shouldn't be spoken of lest you feel the wrath is ridiculous.

Yeah, I am fairly self involved and egocentric but if you think I don't give shit about the world because I'm willing to make a joke then you're just as much of an asshole as you think I am. Taking things like rape too seriously is moronic, the judicial system deals with it and we tackle it as a crime with a victim, nothing more and certainly nothing less.

And Frankie's slipping, at least in recent years, though I do still think he's awesome.
Treating rape like its the essence of the devil I think is perfectly appropriate - not speaking of it is a trap that far too many fall into. Its the reason im typing now is because I believe that the essence of rape is something that society tries to hide away and not admit really exsists - much like prostitution. And im sorry but if you honestly think that judicial and legal processes combat rape you are very mistaken.

Due to current thinking on sex crimes and due to the "innocent until proven guilty" philosophy that is present in most western societies - not that I have a probolem with innocent until proven guilty but its problems are evident with the nature of sex assault and rape. Most rape crimes are not even prosecuted as its victims are far too often presented with ridicule and derision as opposed to anything constructive or logical.

In cases of sexual assualt the legal system fails as there is usually far too little material evidence and a great many ways for the defence to claim "sex yes but rape no". As I said I have no issue in general with the "innocent until proven guilty" philosphy but with sex crimes it is insufficient to provide a satisfactory system to convict the guilty and protect the innocent.

This is why I consider trivialsing rape in the manner that you seem to think appropriate is so damaging. I dont have a problem with people joking about murder because people who commit such crimes are brought to justice in about 90%-95% of cases. In cases of rape justice is the rare rather than the common - and society by and large does not recognise this fact. For exactly what reasons I am not going to specualte upon here.

Suffice to say for myself, having never been a victim of rape but understanding it from the perspective of some who have, I would deem humour around sex crimes to be not just trivialising, but damaging to the chances of victims to recieve any kind of justice. It is also for this reason I would give anyone who is found to be fabricating a charge of rape to get a sentence in line with a rapist.

If justice is not seen to be done then justice ceases to deter those who would succumb to its temptations.

"In my opinion" needs to be scrapped. Look, anything said that isn't hard verified fact is your opinion. This phrase pretty much exists so that easily offended people can tone down people with *actual* opinions.

"Don't take (thing) so seriously." Oh really? And this is usually said by people who are taking it way more seriously than I am. If you don't want me to take it so seriously, why are we having a serious discussion, you huge hypocrite?

"I don't mean to (foo), but..." along with all its cousins, "I'm not racist, but" and "No offense, but" and all of that. If you have to preface a sentence with a justification for why you're not a bad person or you're not intending to do something bad or mean something bad, don't say whatever it is you were going to say. Either say it and own up to it, or don't say it.

"You're overreacting." And who qualified you to say how I should react to anything? This is a common nerdy thing, because (overgeneralization alert) nerds are logic-obsessed folk who think that emotions invalidate any argument. Well, if you say someone is being overdramatic or overreacting, chances are they're just being human, and you're being a jackass.

Yep, there you go.

"Cheer up." Unhappiness is a natural reaction to things being far off from what we'd like them to be. The idea that everyone should be happy all the time, or that anyone can be happy just by wishing it, is absurd, unrealistic, and unhelpful. Lasting unhappiness is cause for concern but that's a different discussion.

"No homo, but....." or any other assertion of heterosexuality. What you're really saying is, "I'm so emotionally fragile, so terrified of what others think, that I'm willing to look like a complete ass just to avoid a slight ribbing by the bigoted cave-dwellers I call friends."

"You wouldn't understand." I find this phrase is most often used by people who I completely understand, but wish I didn't. A guy at my work is a great example. Let's see -- You're grumpy today, insulting everyone around you, being surly and uncooperative, but I "wouldn't understand." Could it be that your latest girlfriend left you (like all the others) because you started yet another fight with her, because you're mentally and emotionally immature, have no ambition, are a penniless couch-hopper at the age of thirty-nine, and think any time you're the slightest bit unhappy you have the right to attack everyone around you for as long as you remain unhappy? See, I understand perfectly.

"You can do anything you put your mind to." Oh, really? Suppose I decide I can fly by jumping off a cliff? Gravity will just let me have my way? Willpower and focus are great, and can lead to great things, but they do not confer omnipotence, nor even a reasonable facsimile thereof. Anyone who says otherwise is a fool.

"Anyone who isn't an optimist ('like me,' is the unspoken implication) is a cynic. There's no such thing as a realist." This is absolute bullshit that infuriates any genuine realist who hears it. To truly be a cynic, one would have to expect the worst in absolutely every situation. Every time I got in my car, I would have to believe the car would break down before I got to my destination, that I would have to walk several miles home (in a pouring rain that came out of nowhere) only to find my house on fire when I got back. A possibility exists for that scenario, but it's extremely unlikely. Acknowledging the possibility of bad things does not equal belief that the worst will always happen.
