" is dangerous to our youth/causes "

Every new Media has been subjected to this fear of everything new. The fear of something new isn't all that bad and we can't blame anyone for fearing new things, after all, we do live our lives and do fairly well and anything new has the potential of being harmful to a livestyle that has served well so far.

It's the Phrase that connects the new thing to something bad that slows the Progress of pretty much any media. It leads to Censorship to the Point where this new Media can only be puplished in disguise. See the Comicsbooks, which where completely outlawed at some point in a rather dark time in U.S. History. You could publish a Magazine that contains some Comics, but no Comicbook.
Progress of a new Medium halted because of fearmongering.

Our favorite medium, the Videogame, didn't get it as bad. True, their have been some Publications about this Medium which where less then factual but at least it still isn't outright forbidden to sell a Videogame, provided you aren't violating age restrictions.

A certain kind of Journalism which we can observe in pretty much every Newsoutlet profits from this fearmongering and this Phrase has been setting Journalism back by being more profitable than real Journalism and has robbed Humanity of many years worth of Progress for pretty much any new kind of media.

OT: Whenever someone says "Its not heavy/hard/etc" When I was younger my bodybuilder of a dad would tell me to haul something without help and when I couldn't lift it he would say "Its not heavy, look!" and pick it up with one hand. WELL GEE MAYBE ITS BECAUSE I'M NOT A CONSTRUCTION WORKER WHO HAULS HEAVIER THINGS AROUND ALL DAY.

Someone said "Suck it up, Princess" to me once - this was at the time I was paying my way through library school at 6-8 hours a day and working 20+ hours a week. I think I was probably complaining about finding the time to do homework. Or eat. Or sleep. The girl who said this to me was a single mother who was single because she slept with her husband's best friend and lamented the position she was now in... except she now lived with the best friend and he drove her everywhere and bought her nice things, because some men are assholes and morons. And I don't think she even graduated high school.

I still get mad over thinking about that comment.

Also... nothing good ever comes from someone saying "Samantha" when they want to speak to me instead of "Sam". Same principal as parents or teachers - even now when I hear my full name, I know something's wrong or not going to end well.

To sum up: Someone using your full name instead of yuor shortened one/nickname and "Suck it up, princess/buttercup" or similar thereof.

G.G.
That's not acceptable. Of all the possible ways to write gg that's just unacceptable.
you can type
Gg
gg
GG
yes, even "you suck noob" is acceptable
but G.G. is not.

PS if you get the reference, give yourself a pat on the back.

"I'm not even going to dignify that with a response."

NO! You just DID respond. But you were responding to say that you are not responding. Just not to whatever point I just raised. Instead, you were trying to belittle my point while asserting your self-imposed moral superiority. Attempting to execute a "holier than thou" attitude while ignoring whatever it was I mentioned, Combined with the assertion that they "Win" by default because I'm suddenly beneath them.

Suffice to say for myself, having never been a victim of rape but understanding it from the perspective of some who have, I would deem humour around sex crimes to be not just trivialising, but damaging to the chances of victims to recieve any kind of justice. It is also for this reason I would give anyone who is found to be fabricating a charge of rape to get a sentence in line with a rapist.

If justice is not seen to be done then justice ceases to deter those who would succumb to its temptations.
Well you're wrong, jokes won't affect how sex crimes are treated in court. If you don't think that these crimes are being dealt with correctly then arguing about jokes on a forum isn't going to change anything, especially when the jokes don't trivialize the crime.

You're giving rape more priority than it needs and seem more than happy to jail people accused of rape and then free them and swap them for a liar if they're found innocent. To be honest I've lost all interest in arguing with someone I've decided is white knighting.

Woah Woah Woah WOAH!...

"I think pedophilia is completely fine."
WHAT!? Has this been spoken aloud mid conversation? Or is that "things that would piss me off if said in my presence"?

If it's the latter then...

"Bat credit card."

I can't imagine how that would even come up in conversation, let alone ignite some reaction.

Yeah, that one annoys me to no end as well. In addition to the "You wouldn't understand" line. Both are just cop outs to deny the legitimacy of any counter argument.

Even worse is when they use the first middle and last names. If someone throws all three names at me I know it's time to either deny everything and/or run like hell.

The most destructive phrase of all is "Your mother was right!"
Second place goes to "That's just the way things are"
You know that slavery used to be the way things are? Then people decided that it should change. If we kept everything the way things were, we would still be hunting with sticks and pointy rocks. It flies in the face of evolution and progress in general.

Hey guys, i've got a few as well.

1. Kanker
Cancer in dutch, it's used quite often as a expletive for whatever. Now let me be clear, i'm ok with using it as material for jokes. Just not as an expletive, i feel it makes cancer trivial in a bad way. I feel it's degrading to anyone having cancer. Hell if someone stubs his toe and yells cancer or uses it in another way. It's just wrong and makes me rage.

2. So it's your job to wash someone's ass?
I work in healthcare as a male nurse and this gets me so incredily pissed off. No shit! YES! I wash people, including their butt. But that's not all dammit, nursing is one of the most demanding proffesions out there! ffing hell, at the best of times there are 4 or more patients directly dependant of my care. And that means i do virtually everything, from binding wounds to offer emotional support to kicking some doctor's ass for not prescribing the right meds.
It's just really degrading.

3. You can't imagine how hard i have to work at my job.
My mom said this to me a couple of times. . . . . needlessly at some point my rage went of like a nuke.
Just because you see me relaxing when i get home doesn't mean i do nothing all day! To hell with that, i have to get up 4:45 am and have to work till 4 pm. Just because you don't see me doesn't mean i'm home all the time. Oh and yea the day you thought i slept all day? I came of the night shift then. Wich was a freaking doozy if you wish to know. Just 1 death, ran our asses off trying to save the patiënt, my collegues tied up there, all 26 other patients woke because of the commotion and i had to care of them because of collegues being tied up. So i had the responsibillity for 26 patients. . . oh and forgot to mention i was an intern back then. . . Pffff. . . .rant is over now. But above story goes a long way of explaining why i hate people saying that (especially my mom :p ), it's just shows how ignorant you can be towards others.

Sorry for the wall of text, but here you have it.
cheers

"It's my belief." or "It's my faith."

I can't stand those phrases because they're the equivalent of saying 'I was born with a brain, but I refuse to use it. I will instead accept what other people have told me is true and go through no effort on my own to determine if that's the case.'

Less egregious than when this is said in the refusal to accept things we already know. Like evolution. Just winds me right up.

Fair enough - agree to disagree I suppose.

You obviously have a problem with someone who disagrees with you on this so whatever floats your boat in the end - even though I think youre being a little naive to suppose trial by jury isnt affected be societal concerns - of which jokes and humour are a part.

Please though dont start name calling, and insulting though - thats just sloppy and more than a little pointless.

Holy hell, I didn't expect to see annoying phrases used - in context - in a thread about annoying phrases.

My own personal peeves are "agree to disagree", "everyone has/I have a right to their/my opinion" (to quote George Carlin, "...my opinion is that you have no right to your opinion!"), and any time anyone asks me to respect them. No, I will not "agree to abide by" you. Nor will I have respect for you (which I'm sure is what you meant).

Ahem.

Depending on the reaction to it, the single most destructive phrase is "I love you." In a romantic context of course.
