The stupidity of the console war

Buying a game system nowadays ain't cheap. And since people make such a big commitment into their chosen console they're willing to defend their decesion despite any flaws there might be. Plus there's also that human tendency to want to fit into a group and defend it.

It's because they've spent a lot of money on either system (not the wii, you buy the wii and you know what you're getting) and they've found out there are inevitably a few games that they wanted but can't get. They feel like they may have chosen the wrong one so they try and get affirmation for their choice.

This guy says it pretty well too. Big investment causes a lot of loyalty in some people because they'd rather not think that they made the wrong choice.

Console wars are stupid, but havn't we been over this. OK fine, let's go over this console war thing one last time. Now I was once a big Nintendo fanboy who would hate anything Playstation or Xbox related. The reasons behind this was because I was young, stupid and the Gamecube was the only thing I had, other than a PS2 slim but at that point I refused to play ANYTHING ELSE THAT WASN'T NINTENDO! Now I've matured and I have come to be a fan of Nintendo, Playstation and Xbox. Why did I stop being such a fanboy? Because it lead me to have no friends and by the end it got tiresome and pathetic. The current console war is pointless because it is only three systems that are all equally good. I have a Wii and Xbox 360 but not a PS3. Does that mean I hate the PS3? No, I just don't have the money. We gamers should all stick together.

But what is worse than Wii, 360 or PS3 fanboys is PC fanboys. I have to say this because everybody talks about fanboys of the other three but never PC. PC gamers think PC gaming being better is a fact and not an opinion. They think they are Gods and would defend PC gaming even after death. Most of all they think that PC gaming is perfect despite many flaws of updating constantly and not having the privilege of sitting back on the sofa and just firing up a console. I had to say that because there are more pathetic PC fanboys than console fanboys. Am I a console fanboy? No, I like the PC, but I hate the fanboys out of all four groups.

I agree that the console wars don't really appear on the Escapist. I saw them the most on the Nsider official Nintendo forums and Gamespot when I was there, since they have a forum dedicated to that.

But what there is here is Console vs. PC. It's more subtle than the outright screaming flame attacks, but there are a lot of console players that bash PC players for bashing console-to-PC-ports and vice versa.

And I'll be the first to admit that putting Battlefield 3 on consoles as well is terrifying. But I think Call of Duty is meant for console (although I'm having a blast with blops on PC).

Ive always been interested in what inside our brains makes us want to go on the internet and spew out out a bunch of vulgar statements about why our prefered console is the ultimate console and every other console is rubbish, this is really common on youtube for some reason although im happy to say since ive been at the escapist I havent really seen this at all which is a bloody novelty for me really.. And (dont take offense ps3 owners i am one myself) alot (not all) of the comments are undeniably from ps3 owners and im not biased I love both of my consoles equally, but yeah, cmon gamers we should be united aggaisnt the evils of Jack Thompson or Micheal Atkinson or fox news or whatever unwanted bastatd child you have in your country. Thoughts?

If not even a contry like Yugoslavia (for example) or some other untied great contry were able to keep untited how the hell do you think the gamers that mostly hate eatchother (don't make me explain the answer is to obvious) unite against some old dude that will die soon thinking he did something whith his life or some other lunatic spreading BS about religion, hostile opinions and that all other contrys than your own are commies....

I agree the console war is more BS like ultra nationalism even if I prefer xbox for myself but you don't really need to care about tossers fighting over who got the best box beacose in the end we will all throw it out than it pisses you off enouth....

But seriously, war is often good in the long run. It's an inevitability of civilizations and cultures. It weeds out the weak and the much too strong, and causes all sides to further their own developments in science. It's the only way sentient life as a whole can ever reach its limit. Of course, there are limits and exceptions for when war grows out of it's usefulness and DOES become a degeneration to society.

As for the Console Wars, it's good as long as the consoles and those in charge of them listen to us.

Its because most can only afford to buy 1. Its natural to defend your decision when its something that you hold for such value, use so often, and cost you so much money. Whether the argument be valid or not, people will defend what they've bought because they don't want to think they want to convince themselves that they haven't made the wrong decision. Yeah it is really stupid. Most people stopped bothering when they realised the PC was vastly superior to all consoles in most ways.

Honestly it's so pointless to fight about what console is better than the other. I have a Wii and a PS3 and I know a lot of people who have a 360, and they ALL make fun of my preferences. To me it's not about what's better, it's about your preferences. For example, I like inexpensive entertainment! PS3; free online gaming? Yes please. (I'm not cheap though, just saying. xD)

However, I understand that the quality of online play is a little better on 360, I'm not saying it isn't. But you have to pay for that extra bit of dependancy and quality. The one thought that goes through my mind that so many people don't understand is, "You're getting your money's worth.". In order to get the better quality, you have to be willing to spend the money. For those who aren't, PS3 is the better choice. It's really a no-brainer.

(I know this isn't about what system has better online, I was just using online as an example. But to be honest, so much video gaming is online now that it's vital to mention it.)

Also, if you really think about it the Wii isn't bad at all. it's just what you're used to. If you get a Wii before a PS3 of 360, you won't really care about graphics. Think of it like this. You have one person who hasn't decided what system they want, and has had no influence on what to buy, but knows the basic details about the three consoles. Whatever console they use first, they will consider it best, because they don't know what else is out there. This isn't supposed to be a big lecture on Psychology, it's just common sense. And all of the stupid people who rip on the Wii because it isn't as good as Xbox don't have a lot of common sense.

The whole premise on choosing a game console is what you prefer, not what you were thinking of getting compared to what that guy in History class said. Do yourself a favour and don't listen to these idiots.

The rivalry between Sega and Nintendo sometimes started actual schoolyard wars.

Then again thats if you trust my uncle, which I don't. Point is, console wars have been going on longer then you, I, and many current gamers have even been alive.
