I guess they are doubling down on the Snyder/Nolan tone for their streaming service and honsetly go for it, because fuck the Marvel/Disney standard that people expects Superheroes to be.
I hate the Snyder/Nolan tone for Superheroes. It's too grimm, too gritty, too joyless. I can't get invested if things are all miserable all the time. You know what what stuck a good balance between humour and drama? The friggan DCAU!!
Joyless? Eh, can see that, since Nolan generally makes "srs movies" that are all about big ideas and only have some dose of humour thrown here and there.
But grim and gritty? Down to earth, sure, but no one really swears, nor bleeds and half of Dark Knight movies takes place during daytime. And cinematography is neat and clean.
Yeah, but if the colour palette was any darker it'd be black and white.

EDIT:
This touches on the biggest problems with the Nolan/Snyder style.
I am well aware of Overly Sarcastic Productions, but never watch their videos on things like this.

Are you certain this video is not biased and one sided?
Did you actually watch the video before proclaiming it biased and one sided?
I thought I made that clear in my post?

No I have no watched it because of my fear of it being biased and one sided.
Then come back when you've actually watched the video.
You know, I have been lectured against in the Religion and Politics forums about posting only videos as explainations to a topic, usually Sargon of Akkad or something back then, and people refused to watch it and answer the question provided because they don't want to watch a 30+ minute video or they hate the person making the video, and are so poilitcally stubborn because they know they are right in what they think and they don't need to explain anything.

And now you are telling me to watch this video even though I am asking whether you think its rather biased or one sided and you won't tell me that, because I am not watching until I know from your confirmation that it is one sided.
It is 10 minutes not 30, but ok fine! No I don't think it's biased or one sided. It's discussing the concept of realism in fiction and how it is often done poorly. She does use the DC Cinematic Universe as an example, but it is not specifically about ragging on Christopher Nolan. Satisfied?
Thank you.

And mind you I am already familiar with this youtube channel and their work, but I never watched this video in question before.

For those who are asking:

Robin, Raven, Starfire, and Beast Boy are the only characters labeled for "Main Cast".

Hawk, Dove, Niles Caulder (Doom Patrol leader), and Dick Grayson's detective partner are billed as "Recurring".

The rest of the Doom Patrol, Wonder Girl, and freaking Jason Todd are billed as "Guest Stars".

Robin breaking necks, Starfire burning somebody alive, and Dove ripping off somebody's eyes, all in one trailer, has pretty much destroyed any interest I had in this show.

I feel a sense of vindication at least because people who think getting rid of Zack Snyder and David S Goyer would somehow improve DC in Film and course correct their tone to a more lighthearted effort, and then this happens with their primier show for thier newly created streaming service, doubling down on the Nolan/Snyder dark and edge tone this time not holding back at all, and Snyder, Goyer, and Nolan have absolutely nothing to do with this show.

Even Geoff Johns is one of the leading peoples helming this show.

Well maybe you should. The Trope Talk series always seemed like just an examination and break down of the tropes in question, not videos about slamming them. She will go into how they can be misused or misapplied, like the case of Realism; but unlike OSP's other videos, which are often quite hilarious, Trope Talk has a more straight forward presentation.

See, I'd have no problem with Titans being used to tell dark or mature stories in theory. But I don't think people whose idea of being mature is to have Robin saying "Fuck Batman" can really tell that kind of story. It's just going to look like terrible terrible fanfiction written by an edgy teenager

Perhaps that is EXACTLY what they are going for and trying to appeal to because in my late teens I have read a ton of fanfiction, mostly of Danny Phantom and Teen Titans and both are equally dark and edgy, and fanfics are written and read a lot of people.

I remember this one from Teen Titans where an entire epic plot began with Robin getting anally raped by Slade (even though appearently they were brainwashed by some OC villain to do it) then another chapter of the story involved an edgy romance between Robin and Raven because fuck Beastboy and Starfire RxR is the OTP, and then time travel happened.

And this one from Danny Phantom where Danny in his Ghost Form is captured by his parents and experiamented on brutally, then he becomes extremely edgy, then he has sex with Sam, and after a conflict, he commits suicide by a gunshot to the head, only to come back to life through fanficcy bullshit and everything was happily ever after.

Personally I wish they were more straight forward in their relevent videos like Red's videos on Shakespeare's work, Blue is more straightforward, but still rather more as a comical way.

I love Red's approach to presenting literature ("Next on this adventure of The Magic School Bus..." lol), but to each their own. Personally I love her video on Beowulf.

So watching the video it only confirmed what I already said before regarding this tone that DC wants to do, but where she uses Watchmen as the example, really I lay the blame on the Nolan Batman movies.

The failure of Green Lantern just made WB think "The Dark Knight made us Millions of Dollars, we must make all DC movies like the Dark Knight!"

I mean Lex Luthor in BvS is enough to show what WB really wants all their DC movies to be like. The Batmanization is holding back what other DC heroes really are because they all must fit in this Batman dominated DC Universe, thus their characterization is all wrong.

We will never get This Superman so long as Batman is the face of DC and the Legacy of the Dark Knight still overshadowing all of DC:

The failure of Green Lantern just made WB think "The Dark Knight made us Millions of Dollars, we must make all DC movies like the Dark Knight!"

I mean Lex Luthor in BvS is enough to show what WB really wants all their DC movies to be like. The Batmanization is holding back what other DC heroes really are because they all must fit in this Batman dominated DC Universe, thus their characterization is all wrong.

We will never get This Superman so long as Batman is the face of DC and the Legacy of the Dark Knight still overshadowing all of DC:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't you the one who was in favour of the "Batmanization" as you call it? You certainly seemed to have a hate-on for the Marvel Cinematic Universe even though I thought they dealt with some really heavy stuff and did it quite well particularly in Winter Soldier, Age of Ultron and Civil War. Thor Ragnarok, not so much considering it hit tonal whiplash about the middle, but never mind.

EDIT: Thank you for taking the time to watch the video.

I admit its amusing but I feel the main points of the story in the works she's reviewing gets lost in her metahumor and references.

In terms of choosing between the 2 extremes, yes I prefer the "Batmanization" over the Marvel/Disney standard, because as I said, at least can actually care about the story at play here and the charcaters are not just the actors acting themselves and my immersion isn't ruined. (And really I think Marvel's heroes in the movies have declined in Costume quality)

But in recent times I now at least acknowledge the problem with the Nolan/Snyder issues and the reasons why this is the case now.

Fair enough although I think the only Marvel movie to really have that problem is the afor mentioned Thor Ragnarok. I haven't seen Infinity War yet. Except for Wonder Woman, which I consider the only good one, I can't really get invested in them because they are far too dark and miserable. I need some contrast. I don't care about any of those characters. I don't feel I'm given a reason to care about any of them. Although I did like Malcolm McDowell as Alfred.

Robin breaking necks, Starfire burning somebody alive, and Dove ripping off somebody's eyes, all in one trailer, has pretty much destroyed any interest I had in this show.
See, I'd have no problem with Titans being used to tell dark or mature stories in theory. But I don't think people whose idea of being mature is to have Robin saying "Fuck Batman" can really tell that kind of story. It's just going to look like terrible terrible fanfiction written by an edgy teenager
Dove was the breaking point. Hawk and Dove are a not at all subtle metaphor of the war hawk vs peace dove struggles regarding conflict, and were conceived of during the Vietnam war. Naturally, Hawk has always been physical, aggressive, and direct, while Dove is cerebral, forward thinking, and pacifistic. Together, they're a good vehicle for debating conflict resolution in a wide variety of situations.

You open up with the pacifist tearing out somebody's eyes, though? That tells me that on a fundamental level the characters aren't going to be used to their potential. And that that potential isn't going to be particularly respected. Hawk tearing out somebody's eyes and Dove scolding him, that's edgy yet true to the characters. Dove tearing out somebody's eyes? That's just plain stupid.

That's not getting into the alien burning the indigenous population alive or the Robin that usually most represents the Bat-family's hope and moral moderation shooting guns and breaking necks. Nor how it seems that Raven, portrayed by a 14 year old actress, is crushing on the Robin who is being portrayed by a 28ish year old actor. I'd be willing to forgive it as just being unfortunate implications, but if I'm gonna hate on the rest of it, might as well use it for fuel.

You see? That all sounds utterly terrible. Thanks for proving my point

Yeah, this is the kind of shit that the Lego Movie-verse Batman is parodying and they're playing it all completely straight. The kind of desperate attempt to look adult that only makes you look childish.

I can't comment on Winter Soldier, but the others...no. Not really.

Age of Ultron doesn't deal with any kind of themes or ideas of substance. Ultron is the stereotypical "humanity sucks so I'm going to remake the world" villain - that isn't some kind of insightful theme. Thor Ragnarok, at best, touches on the idea of colonialism and whitewashing of history...for about a single scene. Civil War alludes to the ideas of oversight vs. personal accountability, but again, doesn't really do anything with them. The themes are background dressing at the end of the day. The only MCU film I've seen that deals with any kind of weighty films (or at least does them beyond window dressing) is Iron Man 3, and given how the MCU has pretty much disowned that film, I doubt we'll be seeing anything like it again.

As I said in my review of Ant-Man and the Wasp, I think Marvel should stop trying for the heavy stuff, because when they go for the fun, light-hearted stuff like Homecoming and Ant-Man/Wasp, they do great. When they try to go for the heavy stuff, they tend to bomb - months on and they're still pulling explanations out of their arse to cover for the fact that Thanos's plan makes no sense.

Are we talking about the same Dove who once dropped a chandelier on a bunch of criminals, breaking every bone in their bodies and stabbed a villain with her own sword? The very concept of a pacifist superhero is an oxymoron.

As for Starfire, her burning people alive is not a new thing. If you read the comics, she was frequently shown as being more comfortable with lethal force than most of the other Titans.

And where the hell is Raven shown crushing on Robin?

I'm sorry are you genuinely trying to say "Shazam, a child in an adult's body, acts like a child" is the same as "Robin, a child in a child's body, is anally raped"? Is that what you're doing here? You're free to dislike the trailer for Shazam but seriously, dude, there's levels here. Get some perspective
