You have no idea how wrong that sounds . My dad makes 35 dollars an hour , and hear I am , with nary a car for myself. And you have a 08 civic and a 3 thousand dollar laptop .My Mom is a public servant and my Dad is unemployed.
Awesome. Get better at manipulation.Phantom2595 said:You have no idea how wrong that sounds . My dad makes 35 dollars an hour , and hear I am , with nary a car for myself. And you have a 08 civic and a 3 thousand dollar laptop .My Mom is a public servant and my Dad is unemployed.
It's almost as if you think I was serious about being popular.Eggo said:Haha, so you're a scrawny weeabo then?
Despite whatever your favorite anime shows tell you, women don't like "guys" with arms and legs thinner than theirs. I hate to break it to you, but little twigs are just as unattractive as fatties.
More importantly, why don't you have any respect for yourself and your parents?
And what school are you going to?
Explain why Dell is apparently shit?crimson5pheonix said:God, please don't get a Dell, save yourself. If you have to get something relatively cheap, get a Gateway. Not a Dell.Radelaide said:It depends on what you're using it for.Eggo said:While a notebook is just a little less underpowered, but is substantially less portable and useful
If you can only have one computer, then I think a $1500-$2000 notebook would be the best choice for most people.
But if you can have two, I would pick a $500 netbook and a $1000-$1500 self-built desktop computer. That way, you can have the best of both worlds.
The laptop I'm getting (XPS m1530 by Dell) is essentially a gaming laptop, which is what I'll be using it for, but I'm also going to uni next year, so I'll be using it for that too. If you want a laptop suited for you, custom make one. None of this Netbook nonsense.
I'm just curious, how is my car crappy? I just want to know.Eggo said:*sigh*
The worst part is how proud you are of manipulating your parents just to get a crappy laptop and a crappier car, especially considering how your dad isn't even employed.
Whatever, enjoy your crappy school. I'm sure there's plenty of other weeabos/assorted social lepers for you to hang out with.
The netbook doesn't cost 6x less in terms of portability / usability. It costs 6x less in price.Eggo said:Here's a great reason: You just spent $3000 for something which can't compete with neither a netbook which costs 6 times less in terms of portability/usability nor a desktop which costs well over twice as less in terms of sheer perfomance.
Hah! Who ever insulted this man has been 1up'ed. And I really want something small and portable that won't weigh me down ,the words portable, gaming and me don't go hand in hand (like Linux and 90% of a population)I want a eeepc. And defining gaming for me is high-sec afk mining and skill changes. That's why I'm looking at vnc for help. I can only hope that jihadswarm doesn't fly through the Caldari border zone.crimson5pheonix said:Well to be fair for everyone here, when I say my Dad is unemployed, he is retired after working as a musician and is living off of my grandfathers stocks (he had a bunch of Exxon stocks from working as an executive) and when I say my Mom is a public servant, she works at NASA.
SO YOU ARE RICH!crimson5pheonix said:Well to be fair for everyone here, when I say my Dad is unemployed, he is retired after working as a musician and is living off of my grandfathers stocks (he had a bunch of Exxon stocks from working as an executive) and when I say my Mom is a public servant, she works at NASA.
Upper middle class and I don't get free gas so Civic for the win.Phantom2595 said:SO YOU ARE RICH!crimson5pheonix said:Well to be fair for everyone here, when I say my Dad is unemployed, he is retired after working as a musician and is living off of my grandfathers stocks (he had a bunch of Exxon stocks from working as an executive) and when I say my Mom is a public servant, she works at NASA.
If I had that kind of money I would buy 3 thousand dollars laptops too . As for the Civic , well , I would would get a Cadillac .
I originally decided not to post this, but now that things are placed in a much clearer perspective, I do think this bears relevance:crimson5pheonix said:Well to be fair for everyone here, when I say my Dad is unemployed, he is retired after working as a musician and is living off of my grandfathers stocks (he had a bunch of Exxon stocks from working as an executive) and when I say my Mom is a public servant, she works at NASA.
Why do people buy a Mercedes-Benz? Is it because:
a) the car has the highest resale value among cars in its class
b) the car is the safest on the road among cars in its class
c) the car is made of 80% recycled materials and is more eco-friendly than other cars in its class
d) the car has the best fuel consumption in its class
e) the car breaks down less than competing models in its class
The correct answer is:
f) You want to make your neighbor and his Toyota Camry green with envy.
Why would I spend USD100,000 on a Mercedes-Benz when for a quarter of that amount I can buy a Toyota Camry, which for all intents and purposes does everything the Mercedes-Benz does? Buying a Mercedes-Benz sure doesn't seem very practical if you look at it from a cost perspective yet it is the number one European car company in terms of brand value (not to mention I'd wager it'd be much easier to impress ladies with a car that has a three-pointed star on its hood).
Moving on to mobile phones, take Vertu. Their mobile phones retail at around USD2,500 for the most basic model. Bear in mind this is a phone that does less than my USD50 Nokia (mine has FM radio - take that, overpriced mobile phone!). I would never in my right mind buy a Vertu but there are those who can afford it and prefer to pay outrageous prices for obsolete hardware but arguably excellent build quality and design (bull - it's all about image again - I've got a Vertu. What shoddy piece of plastic do you own?). Such is the game of the premium market, for those who can afford it and not have to question their purchase.
Look at Falcon Northwest's site. Their PC selector actually asks you if you want a budget box, a bang-for-the-buck desktop, or a computer "for bragging rights." Bragging rights. Hmm... That's when all practical considerations are thrown in the gutter and image takes over.
There is a premium market out there for those who can afford it. Not everyone is looking for price/performance:cost ratios. If I had USD11,719.44 to purchase the Falcon Northwest flagship desktop model with top-of-the-line configuration it certainly isn't because I'm price-conscious - it's because I can (and I'd have to be heavily influenced by some illegal substances to ever spring that kind of money on a single PC - USD500 paint job? There's your netbook!). It also makes the USD3,000 notebook in question seem a downright bargain by comparison.
Personally, I would have opted for a mix of notebook and desktop, but that's just me. Others may place brand cachet as a major factor in their purchase, and if they can afford to, let them. It's their money.
