What makes you say that though? When did I derail the thread?

Right, new problem. My college's internet connection requires me to log in every time my computer turns on or off. Recently, I've been losing the connection randomly, and have to reboot my computer to fix it.

Are you wirelessly connecting?

No, it's a wired connection. The wireless connection works, but it's slow as molasses moving uphill in January.

Molasses can't go uphill.

Then it sounds like either a problem with your laptop (again) or a firewall problem with your school.

Well, I haven't had a problem with it until this month. And it's not like the connection dissappears. But instead of giving Local and Internet, it switches to just Local.

The school's router is screwing up. My router does me that way.

I'm going into network security, I pretty much have my path mapped out, classes, schooling, certifications, experience, etc. But one thing that eludes me... I know I'm going to need to learn a programming language.

I'm debating on what language to learn.
I have a little experience in C++ (Math Class substitute in High School, and an introductory class at College), Java (also math substitute), and some unix Bash scripting.

Now I've heard that Python is a pretty powerful language, but I've also heard that perl is a good language to learn.

So of the listed languages, which should I devote study to? C++ because its widely used and pretty portable across systems (Windows, linux, etc)? Python because of really powerful, quick and dirty scripts to get monotonous jobs done fast?

Also you should at least dip your feet into Lisp or some derivative (like Scheme or whatever). Or maybe, I dunno, Haskell. Some kind of "functional" language, doesn't matter which. You likely won't use "functional" languages a lot directly but it's the fastest way to learn a number of tricks that are very useful in "hybrid" languages.

I <3 lambda.

You know, that brings up a good point to me. I'm looking to program video games, is there any language I should know above the others?

C/C++/C#, perhaps.
