Only real deserved ones on that list are Ikaruga and Contra. I've beaten Ikaruga, but the real challenge is to beat it and get anything better than a "C". Also, I've yet to beat it without using something like five or six continues.

Time to get back to practice, I guess.

Don't make ME laugh. Try getting through Dante Must Die. Let us see if it your definition of walk in the park. Especially the mission before Arkham.
Dante must die was the one where everything died in a single hit, right? I found that easier than the regular game, to be honest. People panic too much with that difficulty and make stupid mistakes, then getting angry at the game for putting that pressure on them.
That would be Heaven or Hell mode...Dante Must Die mode is where the enemies do large amounts of damage to you (maybe 25%-50% with an attack), they have more health, and they can also Devil Trigger if you don't kill them fast enough (increasing both those other 2 features, and makes it so they are harder to flinch)

Devil May Cry 3 was really so difficult?
I realise there were two versions released, and I admit to owning both, but even the harder one I managed to complete, on Dante Must Die mode at that. The end boss on DMD mode is a real pain admittedly but if you have the patience the rest of it really isn't so difficult.

Sonic Unleashed deserves a place. Since I got it, I can't describe how hard it's been to summon the willpower to play past the first level.

Oh, that one. Call me crazy, but I enjoyed that mode the most of the entire game.

That would be heaven and hell, not dante must die

Edit, you already got the reply so.. pointless of me, well might as well comment more on the list.
I only played 3 of those games I think, being DMC3, Ninja Gaiden Black and Shinobi.
Ninja Gaiden Black wasn't that hard was it? I never played a Ninja Gaiden (the new series) on harder then normal or hard difficulty so, not much point I can make, DMC3, Dante must Die is challenging, I managed to beat it, Royal Guard against the final boss is my best advice, it might be because it was the first game of that type that I played, so even normal mode game me a challenge. Shinobi, never beat it, I think I was somewhere in the final stage, at least I hoped I was. Harder games does exists, somewhere, but depend on categories, types etc. might be the hardest games for their style, i.e. plat-formers, beat-em-up... And it's possibly a personal list kind of thing, where subjectivity is always somewhat present

Edit 2, or does those games seems less difficult because they are fun enough that we don't get angered at them?

Indeed, I wouldn't really call any of the DMC games one of the hardest ever. But they have a good balance with their difficulties, so usually it's more a "So Hard, It's Fun" kind of a thing, than a "Hardest Game Ever" thing

Uhh Demon's Souls is definitely a very very hard game. Even after you've pretty much memorized all the levels, it's still a challenge until you over-level your character. And then all you need to do is beat it and it gets hard again. I have an SL130 on NG++ and screw ups are costly. At the point of being able to wipe the floor with all the generic enemies, things like black phantoms and the giant trolls in the swamp are brutal, not to mention Old King Doran and False King Allant. Or how about the executioner, or the guy with the Phosphorescent Pole in Tower of Latria who 2 shots you and breaks your guard so easily even with the Tower Shield +5. Or after the huge tower knight boss, those 3 black phantoms, one of whom uses a damn scraping spear and destroys your gear. Or the frickin flying manta rays who fling massive spears at you along the cliffs of world 4? Even red eye knights can be a hassle if you make a wrong move. Some levels are certainly easier than others, but no matter how experienced or high leveled you are, if you lose concentration, you're dead. That's why it's so hard and deserves to be in the list.

No that's heaven or hell mode which was easier than easy

But Dante must die without the special costume was ridiculously difficult

Heh, you saved me the effort of linking it.

There are much harder games than a few of those on the list. Ninja gaiden is a good one though, such a difficult game.

Why is Contra on that list I beat that game when I was five years old if a five year old can do it any one can. Also MGS on the PS1 is by far the easier of the series if you bandana which you will if you go through on the hardest setting. I suppose all top 10 lists are fail especially this one.

Calumon: What about Mushihimesama?
Espgaluda 2 is harder. Mushihimesama Futari is positively easy in comparison.

Also, I wouldn't put games on a list like this if they require you to turn the difficulty up to max to merit inclusion. Ikaruga, Ghouls and Ghosts, etc. will bend you over and ruin your arsehole on their default difficulty. MGS, DMC, and Ninja Gaiden are cakewalks until you turn them up to 11.

In Jet Set Willy you could get stuck in 'infinite death loops', whereby you'd respawn above a deadly pit or somesuch.

And The Bitmap Brothers' Gods was harder than MGS.

Am I the only person here that actually found Devil May Cry 3 hard? I unlocked easy mode on like level 4 :-\

DMC 3 shouldn't be on the list if DMC 1 isn't. Much more difficult game. The US version of DMC3 is only tough because it defaults you to Hard mode. But with level select and item farming you will get through it eventually.

Ninja Gaiden shouldn't be above Battletoads or Ghouls and Ghosts. Yeah it's a tough game but it doesn't even compare to NES hard. You get save points, you can farm items and weapon upgrades; it gives you all kinds of slack those old game didn't give you.

Why the hell is MGS even on the list? No game from the last 3 or 4 generations can really be considered hard compared to just about anything on the NES or in the arcades.

Oh man, I remember Shinobi (PS2). I loved and hated that game at the same time, as it required perfect timing to one-hit-kill a chain of small enemies, and don't get me started on the bosses on the harder difficulties.

Ninja Gaiden Black I have an agreement with that game it involves me never playing it again.
I want to be The Guy deserves a place there.

I haven't really placed any of those games up there except Battletoads.
That game is EVIL.

one of the early megaman games should be on that list.

It has a soft exterior but once you get into the game it's a dick to the face fairly often.
