Earthworm Jim. Or the starguy from Ristar (is he called Ristar?). Basically anyone who kills stuff... WITH THEIR HEAD!
That's like the definition of hard.

Mario needs to jump several times his own height in order to kill a single Goomba. That, my friend, is called "showboating". The goomba, on the other hand, only needs to walk into him and he dies. Mario? Cream puff.

I'd go for Chuck Rock 2: Son of Chuck. This guy is only one year old and he's already fighting massive dinosaurs with a club that's bigger than he is. Imagine what he'll be like when he grows up. (Master Chief, anyone?)

Ryu Hayabusa, Ninja Gaiden
Kratos, God Of War

Undoubtedly the two most bad-ass characters in gaming.

I personally think there's a difference between "hard" and "macho". Someone who's "hard" isn't necessarily over-muscled and decidedly male, they're just a rebellious badass, at least from my definition. I think you mean the latter, but I'm unsure.

If we're talking straight up bad-ass, you really can't go wrong with Kain from the Blood Omen series of games. Not a sympathetic bone in his vampiric body.

If we're talking from the definition of the OP, I'd have to go with Sergeant Major Avery Johnson from the Halo series. He almost made it to the end, and that's impressive considering the scale of what was going on.

Captain Price, Call of Duty 4. With that kind of facial hair he must be oozing testosterone.

Actually, according to Wiki, no-one here fits.

According to the all-mighty wikipedia, hardness is "characterized by a disregard for local law enforcement, a familiarity with illegal drugs and weaponry, a criminal record, and aggressive tendencies when it is felt that personal territory or livelihood is being threatened". Doesn't really fit any of our characters any more than any other videogame character.
Um, that fit's Duke Nukem almost exactly. The man pop's steroids, while fighting cops, all to kick those alien bastards back to where they came from.

Jack from Farcry
He was beefed up, had a horrible shirt and had the most generic tough guy lines I've ever heard.
and he survived a nuclear explosion at close range.

Doe's Max Payne count? Well...he's -familiar- with drugs I guess, although the only one's he using in the games are massive amounts of painkillers. He can use most of the weapons his enemies get to, most of which would count as illegal. Has a criminal record obviously, and get's aggressi...well, he kills a lot of people and not often in self defense, but rather for his..what I suppose counts as protecting his future livelihood, though I guess it's more revenge motivated. And all of the above shows his frequent disregard for the law.

Though...he's kind of a thin guy though. And mopey and brooding a lot...

Humm, for the OP. Vhailor from Planescape Torment. Yes..I think he has the personality of a piece of string. But to be fair, I guess you could call that driven. He's so dedicated to the pursuit of justice that even after his body's crumbled, he -still- inhabits his armor, becoming almost an avatar of personified justice. Side, judging by his armor, and the general look of other Mercykillers, you can tell Vhailor was probably a be-muscled giant when he was alive too.

"When the injustice is great enough, justice will lend me the strength needed to correct it. None may stand against it. It will shatter every barrier, sunder any shield, tear through any enchantment, and lend its servant the power to pass sentence. Know this: There is nothing on all the Planes that can stay the hand of justice when it is brought against them. It may unmake armies. It may sunder the thrones of gods. Know that for all who betray justice, I am their fate. And fate carries an executioner's axe."
