I personally have to vote for Marcus Fenix and Delta squad. The continous stream of one liners and each one of them having muscles that would shame Schwarzenegger.
Am quite surprised no-one has mentioned the guy from Shadow of the Colossus. Bringing down beasts some 100 times bigger than himself with a sword and bow n arrow... and nothing else. (apart from his ability to climb ridiculously huge hights)
well I woudnt call him tough...Probably a fat softy (taking the part where he stomps on a gomba and gets killed when he got poked by one)
Also i woudnt call Sephiroth a bad ass. Sure the part where hes gonna destroy the world with a giant meteor mights make you think that way, but the fact that he cries for mommy makes me think hes a wuss...
I was tempted to say Dog from Half-Life 2 but since hes a robot, that doesnt really count doesnt it?
Maybe Master Chief, but gotta hand it to Duke Nuken. Blasten Aliens and hit chicks is one defenition of the bad ass "hero"
According to the all-mighty wikipedia, hardness is "characterized by a disregard for local law enforcement, a familiarity with illegal drugs and weaponry, a criminal record, and aggressive tendencies when it is felt that personal territory or livelihood is being threatened". Doesn't really fit any of our characters any more than any other videogame character.
What everyone else says, and add to the list Sam Fisher from Splinter Cell. Hanging upside down from pipes and breaking peoples' necks is pretty bad ass.
Ah, time for Captain Devil's Advocate to join the party. Personally, I think almost everyone one of the characters listed here are necessarily the "toughest". Before you spam me with hate, allow me to explain my position.
Master Chief: Wow, not a surprising choice at all. He does seem like a shoo-in for toughest, what with taking down the Covenant and all. But let's face facts; he's a super-soldier. He's designed to be a one-man army. To me, that disqualifies him off the hop. More importantly, let's analyse the regenerating shield. Nothing screams manly quite like a shield. Once it's gone, he either hides like a coward or gets taken down by a single shot. If he were a real man, he'd go it without the wussy energy shield.
Kratos: Now this seems more like it. A half-naked man running around disembowelling people with his giant blades. How could someone so manly not be the toughest game character out there? Well, for me it's simple; in the first game, he serves as an emissary of a Greek God. In the second game, he IS a Greek God! Being a blessed servant of a deity is an unfair advantage, while being a deity unto himself just plain isn't tough. How tough do you have to be when you're immortal?
Snake: I'll come right out and say it; I've always had a low opinion of Snake. I've just never seen what the big deal is. So when I saw him listed multiple times as the toughest gaming character, some blood did flow as I bit my tongue. But no more! Two words; Cardboard....BOX! He's not tough! When the going gets tough, he hides in a box. He does regain points somewhat for stopping terrorists and gutting out torture sessions, but he's still a pansy.
Niko Bellic: I take it back...I have a low opinion of this bugger. I was unimpressed by GTA4, and Niko just irritated me. He may not be a wuss, but he's not tough. At least, he's certainly not the toughest.
Jack (the guy from BioShock): He's pretty tough, I'll start by saying that. He can survive living in a sunken, ruined paradise overrun by crazy genetic-altering addicts. He beats the crap out of giant scuba-wearing monsters. Hell, he shoots bees out of his damn hands! (Very Manly!) But, he's off the list for me because he's a bully. He harvests ADAM by hunting and beating little girls. (very UN-manly)
Sephiroth: I HATE Sephiroth! I have never liked him, nor have I ever seen the big deal about him. Disagree as you will (I know you will), but he's a wuss.
Duke: No complaints here. He's definately on my list.
Now then, for my pick. My choice is not only tough because of the damage they've inflicted, but also because they've forced their way into a harsh environment. And my pick is....
Samus Aran. She's wiped out more alien menaces than just about every nominee combined, and single-handedly I might mention (let's see Marcus Fenix or Master Chief say that). More importantly, she blasted her way into an entirely male-dominated field. Nothing says tough like kicking the crap out of gender boundaries.
P.S: you should have name the poll "The Top Ten 'Ardest Game Characters". 'Ard denotes toughness
