I -hope- it will be: Dark Souls, Skyrim and Battlefield 3.

I -think- it will end up being: Skyrim, CoD, Batman: AC.

Arkham City has just been released to universal critical acclaim. Uncharted 3 and Skyrim are just around the corner and the anticipation for these games is immense. Personally, these three games are probably the top contenders for GOTY amongst the fans and the major gaming publications IMO.

Which three games do the members of the Escapist think are the ones that will be in the race for GOTY 2011?
Arkham City and Uncharted 3? Really... I mean really?

Skyrim, Portal 2, Deus Ex HR, Saints Row 3, they'll all trounce those two.
Why would you say really, the uncharted series has always been well recieved but since it isn't out yet I could see your skepticism, but have you played Arkham City? The game is a masterpiece and easily has a chance at winning GoTY, even if for some reason you didn't think so how does that warrant a "really...i mean really?"

I'm not denying that I'm outnumbered, especially on these here forums. I'm denying that they make great games. Except for Fallout 3, since that was fun for a few playthroughs.
My opinion is fact...
And as far as I'm concerned, Gears is better than Oblivion. But that's just my opinion.
My opinion isn't fact. Look, no one's going to hate you for disliking Oblivion. *I* didn't like Oblivion. But when you start acting like the one enlightened soul who can see through Bethesda's trickery, we have a problem.

My game of the year is Gears of War 3, since it's the most fun I've had in the series. I'm also smart enough to know that Skyrim will win Game of the Year, simply because it was developed by Bethesda, and as we all know, Bethesda games, no matter how broken, will always win game of the year.
By the way, this quote is my rebuttal to whatever you say next.
I never meant my opinion to be taken as fact, but I see how it came off that way.

I'm not behind Skyrim in the slightest, as I got badly burned by Oblivion due to a main quest shitting itself and not able to complete, thus ruining a 20 hour save game.

I'm not saying that Bethesda uses trickery in their games, but their games always have a ton of stuff wrong with them, like bugs and games crashing.

Skyrim will still get game of the year, and I accept that. I'll just be playing a game that I consider superior.

Xenoblade Chronicles on account of it being mind blowingly awesome (ok exaggerating a bit there but it is very good) of course I am not expecting it to win but as much as I enjoyed arkham asylum, oblivion and Uncharted 2 I cant see their sequels topping this game if they are just more of the same only better (wont stop me getting and enjoying them though).

The game of the year will be MW3 because it will sell the most copies and more people will shout about it (unless the devs went crazy and completely changed the series).

No wait King of Fighters XIII will be game of the year because although I have never played it or understand much about the series as a whole I just know it is going to set the world on fire seriously I have just got a feeling, activision and EA must be crazy releasing their biggest games only a month away at max from this bad boy because when it lands there will be nothing left except this game. (just so you know I am actually looking forward to this game but I cant see it selling well, hopefully the game is good and gets the sales it deserves)

I'm only going to go with games that I have played so far. So Gears 3(last game I bought), Deus ex, and Dead space 2. This is a great year for games, and can't wait to pick some new ones up.

Pretty much anything but BF3. That game was a massive disappointment and felt exactly like CoD.

This is why I hate GOTY: when the times rolls around to actually choose which one is the best, we've already forgotten half of the titles that were released earlier during the year. Portal 2, L.A. Noire? ...Duke Nukem Fore- PAHAHA, no. But my point still stands.

I'm throwing in my lot with either Portal 2, Skyrim or the World's Greatest Detective.

Not that I can afford to play games the same year (or at least 6 month) they're released, but here are my predictions anyway:

Batman: Arkaham City
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Portal 2

(Am I the only one who completely forgot that Portal 2, DAII, n Shogun 2 came out this year?)

So far my personal 3 contenders are Portal 2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and inFamous 2.

I haven't played Arkham City yet, but I'm hearing good things about it.

Skyrim is probably going to get it just on the pure bases of extreme fan generated hype. I'm going to like it, but It will just be an improved version of Oblivion for me and not really deserving of many GOTY awards

I thought Battlefield 3 had a chance to pull an upset until I played the beta, that game didn't live up to the hype and many fans(mainly console players such as myself) of the franchise have dropped it. It will probably only receive token fps awards. It seems that IGN is already starting to have a change of heart.

MW3, lol

Portal 2, nope not gonna happen, that game has faded fast and wasn't able to live up to the first one in terms of popularity, I don't blame Valve though, it would be impossible to reproduce the same effect Portal had on people.

Saint's Row 3, looks really damn good, it will win a few awards. The game isn't being as hyped as other triple A games so it isn't going to sweep the competition. I look forward to playing it.

Arkham City, everybody seems to love this game, so this game is going to be mentioned a lot during the award ceremony, and has the best chance of beating Skyrim. I personally have no interest in it.

Deus Ex: HR, I loved that game but after I beat it, there was noting to do. The game is too confined to specific areas with little to do besides the story which sort of fell apart by the end. I enjoyed the conversation system a lot because you actually had to analyze the character and the situation to convince them to do things, Bioware take notes. It could definitely get the awards for its artistic direction.

Dark Souls, is my personal GOTY. The game is amazing atmosphere and has extremely deep gameplay. I bought it expecting nothing but ended up loving it. My only complaint is the advertising for the game, it definitely hurt sales and popularity for a game that many people would have ended up liking. Having the slogan be "You will die" is stupid, and would ultimately drive people away who might have liked the game. The slogan was in fact the only reason I was hesitant to buy the game. The game isn't very widely known but I hope that the game wins a few awards.

Star Wars The Old Republic (This will be GOTY, it's singleplayer will rule and the other parts are just icing on the cake so to speak)
Dark Souls
Skyrim

My three choices ^^
I don't think a MMO coming out with 11 days left in the year can be polished enough or has enough time to be thoroughly played through to win a GOTY award.

Anyways, I'm seeing Skyward Sword as the underdog here. It's flying under the radar a lot online since Nintendo isn't really on the radar of much of the community, but if it lives up to the hype as the best Zelda game yet then that's going to be really hard for long time reviewers to overlook.

Also I can't believe I'm the first one to mention this, there's another little indy game that's made some noise getting it's official release next month. Perhaps you've heard of it... I'm talking about freakin MINECRAFT people!

Kind of depends on how the review site works but for something like Gamespot who ends to think outside the box (ex: Serious Sam, Demons Soul) I'd be a little surprised if they don't give it to Minecraft.
