Skyrim, COD, Uncharted, Battlefield 3, and Arkham City.

Really, while CODMW3 is really popular, I think Skyrim will win as long as it ends up as good as it is looking. Reviewers always seem to get all over the really long open world RPG's.

Out of the games I've played this year I'd choose:

Portal 2
Bastion
Minecraft (it's out November remember)

Out of games I have yet to play (because they're not out/don't have them yet)

Skyrim
Arkham City
Deus Ex: Human Revolution

High hopes for:

Saints Row The Third (looks like SO much fun)
Sword of the Stars II (can't wait to get stuck in to a real good 4X space Strategy game)

I'm still amazed how everyone on this site seems to ignore Ninty games. Skyward Sword will definitely be in the top, same for Xenoblade.

1. Arkham City, Because he's Batman!!! And It's bigger, better and cooler than the first one.
2. Portal 2, the writing and voice acting in this one was really good, those were some fun 15 hours of game time. A shame the game was still too short.
3. For now I place Deus Ex: Human Revolution on 3. I hated the boss fights and the out of character cut-scenes, but loved the game mechanics and the overaal futuristic feeling it had.

Skyrim isn't out yet, and I haven't played it yet. I can't go naming Skyrim a good or bad game when all I've seen are previews and screenshots.

Skyrim, Saints Row and Deus Ex ...
This

I'm not sure if MMO's can go for GOTY but if so replace Saints Row with The old Republic

HOWEVER this is all speculation, most of these games aren't out yet so I can't give a full opinion.

But numbers don't lie and Bethesda has been taking home solid GOTY's since Morrowind (That means Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3)

Arkham City has just been released to universal critical acclaim. Uncharted 3 and Skyrim are just around the corner and the anticipation for these games is immense. Personally, these three games are probably the top contenders for GOTY amongst the fans and the major gaming publications IMO.

Which three games do the members of the Escapist think are the ones that will be in the race for GOTY 2011?
Same picks as you.

Expected contenders?

Skyrim
Saints Row 3
Arkham City
LoZ: Skyward Sword

*Dark Souls (I would love to consider it as one, but it just doesn't appeal to a wide enough audience)

I expect Saints Row will end up being my favorite game this year. But as it stands right now, Arkham is the best game I've played all year hands down.

Gears 3 was better than I thought, but nowhere near GotY material. Dead Island was a big surprise, but also nowhere near GotY. And I'd put Forza 4 as the best racer I've played since the original Collin McRae Rally games on the old Xbox. But I figure when all the votes are tallied and the year is done, most publications will name Portal 2.

I also have to give a nod to InFamous 2 as the best PS3 exclusive of this year. I know most poeple will probably end up putting that on Uncharted, but for me it's InFamous. Cole McGrath vs Nathan Drake... Cole wins without even having to break out the lightning. He wins by virtue of the fact that he isn't voiced by Nolan North. :p

At this point, ive heard most big title games been called game of the year, like the phrase "film of the year", i hear it so much i stop paying attention.

But my big 3 atm are saints row 3, arkham city and infamous 2, probably should look up a list of releases this year to be sure actually.

Saints Row 3
Batman: Arkham City
Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Coming close second is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Do note that my choices are based on quality of game, not quantity of units sold to kids--I'M LOOKING AT YOU, MW3...and glancing occasionally in your direction, BF3. Ever since I discovered ARMA, you no longer have a place in my life, Battlefield. And since you're tarnished by a dirty relationship with EA Games, I simply don't have the patience to deal with your filthy habits.

Bastion is my vote so far. I literally couldn't find anything wrong with that game and enjoyed it immensly. Just picked up Dark Souls as well and I loved the original so that might be up there as well.

This. Dark Souls is completely brave and an absolute masterpiece.

1) Dark Souls
2) Portal 2
3) Batman: AC

Hmmm. I have to think about this one..... I've got it!

TLOZ:SS
Skyrim
Batman:Arkham City.
I will now awkwardly introduce reasons for this list. GO!

TLOZ:SS: It just looks so f**king badass. Also, it looks like the most creative of the zelda games. And I love creativity in games.

Skyrim: I personally am not looking forward to this game to any extent. I'm not a fan of MMORPGs, they just seem too time consuming, and the concept of a neverending game just seems stupid to me. But let's face it, this game will be up there for GOTY, one way or another.

Batman: Arkham City: This is a good time to say that this list is in no particular order, because me making a chronological list is about as likely as George Lucas making another good Star wars movie. *ba dum tish* This is also a good time to say this, because a bunch of Batman fans will be on my *** for putting this at third.. But anyway, this just looks perfect. There's just so many things that I'm looking forward to, I can't put all of it in one post. I'll just say this, just buy the ****ing game.

Other games that might make GOTY but I won't go into detail about:
Professor Layton 4
Every shooter coming out this year
One of the kirby games
Mario 3D land
And Portal 2.

Atheist.

I really doubt that. Not that Dark Souls isn't a good game (I absolutely love it and I think it's probably my favorite of the year) but I think that Skyrim is all around just more popular and hyped by the media than Dark Souls.
I believe Gamestop gave Demon's Souls GOTY, so that's a possible thumbs up for Dark Souls on that front.

Nobody mentioned Gears of War 3? Simply brilliant. Best online game i've played, and best of all, they've put a lot of work and effort into the game and it shows, unlike most developers now.

Bastion, Portal 2, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Fallout: New Vegas - Lonesome Road get's an honorable mention, on account of it only being DLC.
