Oh yeah, in case anyone cares to use the Guild in any significant background or plot devices feel free to read here for some information on how they work, why they work, when they work, and if your going to get a dirk in your ribs.
The Guild of Cartography-A Primer
Founded quite early on in the Towers history overall, it takes sanction in Saint Earn-Vatar who is believed to be a climber who nearly reached as far as Gilgamesh in a quest to map his very path.
While mostly human they are not at all racist or sexist in any real way, but it tends to be a "runs in the family" ordeal.
It is divided in to three divisions, followed by 9 sub-sections (3 per), 27 minor groups, followed by at most 81 actual groups of climbers/explorers/scouters/etc.
Each division specializes and works together in its own system of both check and balance, each with 3 leaders of sub-sections that basically get a vote. They are as follows...
Protection (or as it goes by Pen)

<spoiler=The Pen>Formed and often the most trained in of the three, all members one time or another go through this martial course of training. With masters and makers of arms and weapons, this is where the bones of the Guild are made to be used to fight for what they believe is right.
They have everything from Hand-to-Hand, Whip, Crossbow, you name it.
Primary research is weapons and other lethal/non-lethal arms. They are also partially the main police force and guards when it comes to colonies and outposts made by the guild.
"The pen is mightier then the sword, specially when mine turns in to a spear" -Chief of Forge Briar Sallowman
Whenever high rank or honors are achieved the recipient will get there pen enchanted and turned in to a weapon of choice with a great deal of magic put in to it. These are considered rare artifacts and relics in any case of some of the older generations. The design of the pen all members hold is a copy of what Earn-Vatar is believed to have used, and the 9 other minor pens he made are given to the 9 leaders as a sign of office. Each can turn in to a weapon or holds some power.
Inquisition (Ink for short)

<spoiler=The Deal>The Ink is the inner task force that holds all efforts of communication and information as there chief goals. With minor in inner security, and research of magical arts. they are often seen as both Scientists and Magic-Users, and always seen as spies and espionage.
Asides from furthering training in magic and mystery to shroud there agents, rumors are often spread and confirmed for there research in changing the very life force and bodies of those in the Guild. They are in lack of a better word, Biomancers and Xenomancers, and commit (allegedly) experiments upon recently born to further goals of the Guild.
So it is rarely strange to see tails, fangs, claws, and other assortment of features on people and is generally accepted in a positive light, though questions are rarely asked for what lurks in the bars and cages...
Last but not least is, Preservation (Paper indeed)
<spoiler=If it helps>http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs22/i/2007/334/a/6/Scroll_by_Hirokugawa.png
<spoiler=The Deal>A combination of Ink and Pen, these are the archive and real cartographers when it comes down to the works of books and other related material within the guild. Held in high esteem and honors, this is where all the old members go to work in the end quite often. Very open, very friendly, and very deadly when it comes to protecting and preserving master maps and other things. They are currently working on the Tower Map and is constantly shifting piece of magic paper in the shape of a scroll. Those who have seen it in the off chance that are not under this division speak of what a wonder it is.
Effectively this division complies the information, stores, guards, and sometimes gathers and confirms it.
