I'm more annoyed with stereotypes. Trust me, there's nothing more annoying then a guy walking up to me saying I do nothing but eat pizza and play super mario(I'm half-italian, see). So yeah, Its pretty obvious that not every single female in existence only knows about ponies, but some people think it that way. Those are the same people that need to understand that I also like Modern warfare, not just super mario.

In some cases, girl gamers are afraid to speak up. In fact, one of them registered an account just to tell me that my reply in another thread made her feel like it was okay to come out and talk about games with the guys.

I think it's best that we all grow up, and realize it's no better to broadcast how much of a girl you are (GirlyGamer88) than it is to broadcast how much of a guy you are (Touchmybone16*) and get on with just being one co-op of gamers.

Also, in WoW, the women were not quite dime a dozen, but there were quite a few of them. It's enlightening, IMHO. And I played a female character just for kicks, and garnered a few experiences from that, but that's another post.

Guys are dicks sometimes (har, har).
Of course, that applies to people in general, but online is where "macho men" still live on, in all of their fake glory.

I've found that females who happen to play video games are often much more skilled than males, even males with lots more experience. At the risk of putting my GAMRPRIDELOL on the line, I've been playing video games for nearly 20 years, and my best girl friend is the best Guitar Hero, Tetris, Wii Sports, Bejeweled, and overall-Mario player that I know, frequently besting me at things I've been playing for years, and that she picked up in the last 6 months. Females, from my observation, tend to display a greater degree of patience, precision, strategy, and coolheadedness when approaching their games. Attention-whoring can be an issue, but on the whole, male gamers are greater attention whores anyway. We're the ones that make a fuss when a woman shows up; rarely is the opposite the case.

I swear. At least half the female gamers on this site make a thread about female gamers within their first 50-100 posts.

Anyway, as for your question. Girl gamers are a plague on the gaming world. They whore it up for attention all the while claiming not to and then complain about how females are represented in games. The world would be far better off without them.

However. Gamers who just so happen to be girls are fine. Those who just game without feeling the need to draw attention to the fact. Even in a round about way such as this.
When I jump online, I do not want female gamers. I just want gamers. Whatever it is you are packing in your panties is best kept out of the conversation.

As for why guys make a fuss. Because A) They are sad pathetic losers and B) The girls force a fuss if one does not naturally occur.
Couldn't have said it better myself.

I don't know (personally, in real life) any girl that would even play casual games. I know some girls who play flash games and stuff like that...so, yeah.
But i really don't give a shit about your gender. I knew two really nice girls in WoW, one kicked my ass all the time and helped me be better, other was a ''hi all :*'' type, that dragged me down like a stone. Those were some really great times, i had loads of fun with them,...almost makes me want to play again. I surely don't have some kind of an ''issue''.

A huge proportion of games nowadays seem saturated with that special brand of exclusively male idiocy. That must be frustrating for you girls...

I personally know 2 gaming girls. One I met via RE5 and in Mercernaries she can wipe the floor with me there. But in COD/2 she falls beneath my hail of bullets all the time.

The second girl I dated for a little while and she can destroy me in guitar hero, but I suck at those games anyways. L4D/2 I win, but not by much.

I think the reason most guys don't like it if a girl gamer is in the server with them is the fact that, if they beat you, then all that trash talk, all that mention of how you're going to wipe the floor with them, falls down to the points. I've been beaten by girls on COD and I've beaten girls. Though my only bad experince in playing against one is a girl who was with her boyfriend and they were going for an entire game of her not dying. So when I got around them for to long, they'd kill me. So I just started 'nading them when I saw them.. they left after their 3rd deaths, I wasn't the only one doing it..

Say what you will about Girl Gamers, in my experience they are more tolerable than 75% of the male gamer demographic who act like immature douchebags.
I'd like to single this out for special attention.

In the meantime, I'd also like to point out that, in my experience, at least half of the 'female gamers' I've had the pleasure of gaming with were simply 'gamers that were girls'. Most of that group were married, and played with their hubbies, and they didn't want special treatment, but they did want the opportunity to be included in raids and the like. They also tended to play healers and support roles, which many guys don't like nearly as much, so they fill an important spot within a group, based on that alone.

Unfortunately, as in life, the remaining portion of the 'female gamers' where attention-seekers and drama queens, although they were by no means the ONLY attention-whores and drama queens; there was one guy in an allied guild in WAR that guild-jumped 4 times that I know of, because he wasn't getting 'Star Billing' in any of them. I certainly qualified him as a 'high-maintenance *****', but at least he was a good distraction for the opposing players.

Basically what I wanna know is: why is there SUCH a fuss surrounding the topic of girl gamers; how elusive they are and such, and, girl gamers, I want your opinions on this because I know you know exactly what I mean.

I just really want to know what you guys think!

UPDATE: i honestly believe im a gamer who just happens to be a girl. and i agree with the attention seeking. it annoys me.
First off, welcome to the Escapist. Good first thread.

Any of my real-life friends who are gamers treat female gamers exactly as they would thier male buddies.

We (generally) respect our women as equals here in Ireland, online is no different.

As for why girl gamers are treated differently?

Simple. Because they are a minority.

It's uncommon to meet a girl gamer, and guys like girls who are into the same stuff as them.

GRRRAHH!

*facedesk*

I'd say one of the true things about most girl gamers is that they're content with just being gamers and not constantly bitching about how we're sooooo raaare etc..

FFS, we make up %40 of the gaming population, thats not fucking rare.

I blame the community of whatever game you are playing.

I've met plenty of female gamers on Rock Band 2 via online, but on Modern Warfare 2-- I've only seen one that has ever used their mic. Rock Band is far more laid back when it comes to who plays it and I see far less assholes, if any. Modern Warfare 2 is much different from that.

Still, it isn't so much that I am surprised to see certain women playing games as I find it fucking awesome.

I know a few gamers who are girls and they appear to be part of the same spectrum as male gamers, I know some who only play small casual flash based games, some who play games a bit like me and those who take them very seriously. From my experience I don't really think that there is much of a difference between girls and guys when you're talking about video games.

I like girl gamers because (in my experience) very few of them fit into the "annoying asshole" category, whereas tons of otherwise intelligent guys still manage to do so. Obviously (as in real life) the females amongst us can be as whiny, bitchy and annoying as the males but I seem to encounter that much less in the gaming community. That said this is only my experience, so probably isn't a truism everywhere.

I do also think that the whole "omg omg a girl!" phenomenon is mostly a myth, at least in any community where everyone is over the age of 13. Maybe 5 years ago people thought it was still funny to be completely sexist and come onto anyone who was female, but not really anymore (certainly not at any of the forums I frequent). In fact a lot of the time the only people making any sort of BIG deal about someone being a girl are the girls themselves

Yeah... I remember there was one girl gamer I was playing with once on Left 4 Dead 2. Normally I don't have a problem with playing with anyone unless they start acting in stupid or annoying ways. This one hit the borderline, when, after I completed her for single-handedly fending off a nearly full-sized horde with a single regular pistol... Here is a rough transcript (with commentary) of that occasion:

(Girl gamer fights off horde... no I can't remember her username right now, I only played one campaign with her)

Me: Wow that was impressive.
(I would have said to to anyone who manages to fight off a horde with just one measly little pistol)

Girl Gamer: Thanks. And I'm a girl... with a vagina.
(I swear that those were her exact words)

Long pause...

Me: And I should care because...?

Girl Gamer: I dunno. (sounding oddly disappointed)

End of transcript.

This has only happened once. Oh wait... now I remember her user-name: "OMFGITSAGURRL!!!!"
(face-palm)

Normally, I don't have a problem playing with female gamers, because they tend to be gamers first whilst playing games. Some of them are better at the game than me, some of them are a little on the noob side. But in either case, I will help out however I can (remember this if L4D 1/2 we're talking about, so I'm going to do that regardless of actual gender). And just generally try to have a good game. But...there's no pleasing some people I guess...
