Say that modern games are better.

I fucking dare you.
Modern games are better looking, more entertaining, and have more money invested in them.

Take the nostalgia glasses off and realize that for every metal slug, there is quite a number of: Gauntlet Legends,
Jersey Devil
Mission Impossible
Superman 64

Every year sees crap games released. Every year has good games.

Starfox Adventures were still awesome back in the day, so was Metroid Prime.

Though if we want to go card/board games.. UNO owns everything, hands down.

I'm confused, why are you comparing excellent old games to shitty old games? If I'm correct, you're saying that most old games are shitty and there are no modern shitty games.

Oh, and "More entertaining" is entirely subjective. Bignose the Caveman, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Super Mario Brothers 3 are all infinitely more entertaining than another of those wondrous shit-brown shooters I see every day at the local game store.

You just compared METAL SLUG, one of the greatest side-scrolling action games of all time, to four of the worst games ever made, and you expect me to think you made a good point?

I won't say that modern games are better, but I will say that I prefer this game over yours.

To be honest, I haven't actually played Metal Slug 2. I just wanted to post the pic. *blushed face*

1, if you had to choose between this 'best game ever' and a modern game to play for the rest of your life, anyone with a working brain would choose the modern game.
In all honesty, if there was only one game I could ever play again, it would almost certainly be Ocarina of Time. It's my favorite game of all time and I still find myself playing through it every couple of months.

I can't believe someone else has actually played this game! T'was a strange game and somewhat enjoyable, those big bugs used to scare the Ba-Jesus out of me when I was a kid. O_O

OP: Yes nostalgia does cloud judgement of games sometimes, but some old games are just that good and deserve the praise they get (Zelda: OoT, Star Fox 64, etc.).
Yeah I was surprised to see not just one, but 2 other people that played Jet Force Gemini..OT: I second your statement. Nostalgia does make us think games were better than they would be in comparison to now...however a few games back then could still compare to games now. Maybe not graphics-wise but certainly gameplay and character-wise. I pull out Ocarina of Time maybe twice a year or so to beat it again. Hell, I've been playing marvel vs capcom like crazy recently...love that game.

Great games from previous generations are still great, despite inferior graphics. Crap games from the current generation are still crap, despite improved technology.

End of story.
Yeah, that about sums it up. I'd add to this, but I think that's already covered everything that needs to be said.

Nostalgia can kiss my ass. Some things stand the test of time.
I cannot agree more, that game is made of awesome.
This game came out when I was FOUR and I still knew it was awesome. Sonic my age old friend, we need to have a serious talk...

I think Mario Bros. 3 is still a game I'd like to spend a good while playing, despite it being a little rosy tinted. That game was completely awesome, and difficult to truly master. Admittedly, I've probably clocked more hours on more modern games, but many of them are shooters or RPGs. Timesplitters 3 still gets a lot of play when my friends come over, and I've played my way through KOTOR 1&2 several times. However, nostalgic gaming is still a lot of fun.

I'll take Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn and its expansion over your silly modern games (even if DA:O is a step back in the right diretion)

I think the theory mentioned has some pretty major holes, as many of the previous posters have shown, and at what point does a game become old, and nostalgia ridden?

For some reason I can't help but think your missing the point when people say old games were better. These people had more FUN with the older games, just because they were not constructed with the same standards does not mean it dampers the measure with which a game provides its sole purpose, fun.

Once you realize its not about how well made it is, but how much fun it provides the player, you will find many games transcend the test of time.

Well Sonic CD, Mortal Kombat 1-3 are some of my favourite games, no older games are not better than newer games.

I'm sorry, Super Metroid 3 is a nearly perfect game.
Eh, there was only one Super Metroid. Also, the fire level (Ridley?) towards the end kind of sucked. Around the time I came to the room with the two damn-near unbeatable space pirates, I just gave up in frustration.

Well yes to an extent nostalgia does cloud our vision but there a lot of older games out there better than modern games as a lot of modern games live on multiplayer for replayability in fact recent I went back to playing the DIGIMON GAMES FOR PS1 and Probotector and loads of old games I used to play and some are far superior to some new games but that said for every diamond there are like a million pieces of shit which goes for every generation.

Not entirely true for everyone.

Myself for example, I still have Doom on my PC and play it regularly since the day I got it, about 15 years ago. To be precise I have Jdoom, Zdoom and Skulltag which are essentially an updated Doom engine with support for modern video cards and resolutions, mouse look and higher resolution textures, the game itself is still the same. Fan base is still strong and devoted and there is a lot of very good user made content.

If I had to make a choice and pick the game I would be playing for the rest of my life, I would pick that over any modern FPS without a second thought.

I think this type of behavior is classified as "Fanboyism".
Actually, coming from someone who played Bioshock first and then System Shock 2, SS2 is the better game. Bioshock has a way better plot and setting, but SS2 has much better gameplay and is a lot more deep.

I'd love to see SS2 remade with the Bioshock engine though.
I've played SS, SS2 and Bioshcok in the proper chronological order, and if asked I would rate SS2 as the best of the three and Bioshock being the worst.

This is how I see it:
- SS was the first and original, when I first played it, to me it was a revelation.
- SS2 was the proper sequel with little more accent put on action.
- Bioshock, even though not directly related to SS series could be considered as the third game. The story is different but all the concepts are the same with SS games same goes for gameplay elements. The accent is put on visuals and action, to the extent of making in game currency, vending machines and mini games perceived as a needless distraction and sometimes an annoyance.

In short, I prefer SS2 because it has a perfect inner balance of all its elements.

So, is The Lost Symbol (Dan Brown, 2009) better than The Brothers Karamazov (Fyodor Dostoyevsky, 1880), just because it´s newer?
