Can't remember what age but I'd had it pretty much figured out by the time I was told anyway. Was probably about the same age I stopped believing in God too...

So my Mum and Dad just told my brother that Santa Claus is not real. He was asking to many questions about Santa and the letter he wrote and when you want the truth well it hurts.

He is crying atm and is trying to say my dad is lieing.

So my questions to you is: What age were you told Santa/tooth fairy etc were not real? What was your reaction?

I was told about the tooth fairy after all my baby teeth had fallen out and I was told about Santa when I was 9. I didn't truth my parents after that for a while.

Do you think parents should lie to there kids about Santa? Why?

Is there any moments in your life where you wish you were not told the truth?
I think the idea for a lot of parents, is for the kids to grow out of the deception. Personally, my mom and dad never actually told me. By the time I was about ten, I had just kind of grown out of the myth. I mean, if you don't figure it out on your own, there are your school friends who are all gradually starting to second guess it as well.

The lie isn't meant to be cruel. It's a concept to a) keep kids honest and b) help enrich the spirit of holiday. After all, who doesn't like the idea of a jolly, friendly grandfather type leaving you free gifts for being a good kid?

Anyway, to this day, my mom still tries to pretend that Santa is alive and well. She's really the spirit of Christmas in that household.
So do we all, though the entirity of our family is quite aware he does not, in fact, exist. Technically.

My parents never gave me the Santa thing. For me Santa was a tradition that was followed during Christmas, I never actually thought he was real.

my parents still maintain a half hearted pretence that he is real.

i had never really believed that he was real (it didn't make sense to me even then), but it was confirmed for me that he wasn't when a friend found a book entitled "how to explain to your child that santa claus isn't real". i guess the advice it gave was "leave this book around for your child to find".

the tooth fairy i had a vague belief in at one point, but it vanished when my insomnia kept me awake long enough for me to see my mum put the money under my pillow at the age of 6 (i have had insomnia since the age of 4. i'm surprised that that possibility didn't occur to her).

The guy next door told me about santa when I was about 7.

I didn't believe him at first, but I stayed up to check and discovered my dad stumbling around the bottom of my bed where my stocking was.

I don't think I ever believed in the tooth fairy.

I never believed in any of them. I was told about them, in stories, but I don't recall anyone ever attempting to make me believe that they were real. I never understood why anyone would do that to their children.

But does not believing in those kinds of things meant that you have left your childhood behind?

Well kinda the magic of believing anything is possible is what made up you're childhood and when you stop believing in it and become realistic about the world around you, you lose you're childhood

I detected the sarcastic tone my parents adopted while referencing to Santa so I immediately smartened up. And by crist I cant believe people genuinely become upset when they are told the truth, and an even more baffling question is why parents insist on introducing a character as real when he is not. I assume it is derived from the same path as religion, something that seems surreal to me being British born and as far into atheism as you can find yourself.

In addition I cant remember ever having regretted been told the truth, in my opinion there is no justification for supporting ignorance, aside from covering up a mistake or illegal action in which case I fully understand.

Im pretty sure when I was a kid the idea of santa not being real was ingrained enough into pop culture i.e episodes of the simpsons for most kids not to believe in santa for very long.

Even though my parents know I don't believe, my mother still does the santa stuff. I caught on around 9 by myself. I let her do it out of a sense of tradition and the fact that in the end, I know who the presents come from and I barely look at the to: from: anyway.

Santa is real. I met him in Hawaii. He was taking a helicopter ride over the big island with Mrs. Claus. I swear it.
I know some old fat man who is bald on the top of his head and wear a red/white stripped shirt with a very long white beard, glasses and rosy cheeks.

Wait, if none of these people are real... then maybe I'm not real... maybe all that's holding me together in life is the belief that I actually exist!

Oh God, here I go...

My parents never bothered with the Santa Claus/Toothfairy/Easter Bunny malarkey. Everyone else though...

Well I once learned the easter bunny wasn't real from my older brother I cried.

when I was 11 it was 2 weeks after christmas and the whole family was talking. My mom said something like " the guy at the store was right when he said the bike would fit me " ( me as in me not mom ) I then said " you said santa got me that bike! I didn't react I just went on with it. I didn't care since I had my suspicions already.
