TBH I don't know very much about Smuts. All I know is that he used to have a road named after him.

As for Zuma... Well South Africa hasn't fallen apart as people said it would. And he's sure as fuck better than Mbeki.

Edit: This is why I say look are irrelevant, if Abe or any of the past presidents had run for office these days, with 24/7 new coverage they wouldn't even make through the party primaries. Nixon lost his first presidential run against JFK because he looked ill (which he wasn't, the spotlight on the debate stage made him sweat like he had a fever).

IIRC, it was because he refused makeup, thinking it was only for homosexuals, whereas Kennedy didn't object.

Also, Nixon did well with people who listened to the radio broadcast, and didn't see it on TV.
