The term 'Ireland' covers two seperate countries.

Northern ireland (part of the U.K)

And The Republic of Ireland (Seperate country)

There completely different, For example in N.I we spend Pounds, in the Republic its Euros.

The United Kingdom is the combination of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland (not Ireland as the Irish take it to mean the Republic of Ireland). Take Northern Ireland out of the picture and you have Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland). This is why the official name for the UK is "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".

Your British Isles description is accurate: it's the two nations (the UK and the Republic of Ireland) plus around 5000 smaller islands. Among them is the Isle of Man, which is another independent nation.

Also I think Britain is meant to be just England and Wales, not England and Scotland. It doesn't matter though, too many people use it nowadays as a short cut from Great Britain. And I can't blame them, it's shorter and sounds less pretentious than adding "Great" everywhere.

As for the name, I believe it has a Roman origin to it. They named the territory (excluding Scotland, because the Romans never got a stronghold there) "Britannia Major" to differentiate from "Brittany" - France.

Well, according to the all knowing Wikipedia, the UK's full title is "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland"

I usually shorten that to United Kingdom, and if I'm really lazy (which is almost never) I just say England

Despite the fact that it is?

OT: Great Britain and Britain are the same thing as far as I'm aware; the United Kingdom is the actual name of the country (ala United States of America). Britain encompasses England, Scotland and Wales, whilst Northern Ireland is not from what I can tell, given the full name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

I just wish American's would stop using British to equal English. There is no such thing as a British accent *headwall* It drives me batty to hear it. I have an ENGLISH accent, very different from the equally lovely Welsh and Scottish accents.

I can agree with that but honestly when has the english conducted assaults on Irish soil after those said events?. After the IRA officially disbanded did the English still plague you?. They left and all they have as a connection with Southern Ireland is Nothern Ireland, which by law isn't part of the Republic. It;s now a domestic british matter. Also since the local population willingly went to the Brits I don't see what the fuss is about anymore. The english leave the irish alone and the Irish leave the enlish alone. Why is this simple situation so convoluted with vengence and for something that happened in 1900s?.
Half the population of Northern Ireland still want it to become part of Ireland again.
As you probably would if a foreign force took over the North of your country and plonked it's people down and moved out yours, and killed them in many cases.
In my book, that's ethnic cleansing.
The other half were paid to come to Ireland and kick Irish out of there homes. Despite this, I hold no grudge against the Ulster Scots, but against the government that sent them.
I hope you understand the scale of this. They killed millions of us. Over a period of 800 years the Irish were treated like the Palestinians in Israel. Up to the 1990's Irish people were being burned out of their homes in Northern Ireland.
And it's not as though those times won't come back, not until the Unionists devolve policing at least.
Northern Ireland still has the methods and ruling of a police state.
Rest assured though, one day Northern Ireland will become part of Ireland again, and then all enmity between the two nations will cease, and we can put this all behind us.
Until then, it won't be behind us.

Now can we stop? I've got video games to talk about.
Sure, I won't stop you.

Lets think no we cant stop one side of the story from you the other from me.
1. Its not 50/50 when it comes to the point of a join Ireland not by a long shot.
2. Police state maybe if people did not go around killing people that are about to go serve there people the army has been cut down in N.I but because of people that still think we should be one and killing policemen and army men the army may have to come back in force.
God we have had some nice days of pace over here and these people that come along and say o were not happy lets go kill people make me sick!!

As long as nobody says Ireland is part of the UK, then I'm okay with it.

Actually, you just said the United Kingdom contains Ireland.

BURN IN HELL!

It's Northern Ireland that's part of the UK, not Ireland. Believe me, Irish have spent long enough fighting and starving to not be part of the UK that we're very touchy about it.

And sometimes even saying Northern Ireland is part of the UK annoys us.
Whenever I talk to Irish fellows, I make sure to say I'm Scottish, rather than British. It helps leap over the awkwardness if one of them is a little geopolitical

My history teacher is from Ireland. We did Irish modern History (Civil War onwards)

You guys have been through some serious shit

Though it annoys me that whenever we try to get to the bottom of the problem, it turns out that the answer lies somewhere between all the usual opinions, and that everyone is a little to blame

Hats off to you, though

OT:

Great Britain = England, Wales and Scotland (the island next to Ireland)
United Kingdom = England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. (the subjects of Queen Elizabeth II)
British Isles = United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland

Ok, here, let me get it right.

UK: Great Britain (the island) Northern Ireland and the Isle Of Man.

All other places that it owns (Falklands, Gibraltar) are Overseas territories.

Great Britain: The Island: Scotland, England and Wales

England: England the country, excluding Wales and Scotland.

Ireland: Free forever more.
Éireann go Brách?

Also sorry, the Isle of Man is independent of the United Kingdom, just like your fair country. They have their own government and laws for pity's sake!. They will be none to pleased of this!.
Im sure all 50 of them are rallying in protest as we speak.

/agree. Honestly whenever there's one of these threads about the UK, Ireland get's pulled into it as being part of Great Britain. That's like saying mayonnaise is part of ketchup. They're two completely seperate things.

So now I want to get the record straight and please be patient while I try and get all this sorted out.

The united kingdom: consists of the regions, England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland
that is correct

The British Isles: is the entirety of the British geographical area. Which means mainland UK, Ireland and all those tiny islands nearby.
Is this right for starters?. if so then,

Great Britain: refers to England, Scotland and Wales (excluding N.Ireland)
Both right

Britain: (this was really confusing) I always though Britain is a condensed form of Great Britain but apparently not. Is it true then that Britain means the regions of England and Scotland Wales only?.
Britain is England, and only England, at least to the best of my knowledge.
