As long as nobody says Ireland is part of the UK, then I'm okay with it.

Actually, you just said the United Kingdom contains Ireland.

BURN IN HELL!

It's Northern Ireland that's part of the UK, not Ireland. Believe me, Irish have spent long enough fighting and starving to not be part of the UK that we're very touchy about it.

And sometimes even saying Northern Ireland is part of the UK annoys us.
/agree. Honestly whenever there's one of these threads about the UK, Ireland get's pulled into it as being part of Great Britain. That's like saying mayonnaise is part of ketchup. They're two completely seperate things.
While I agree, this is possibly the worst analogy I have ever come across.

Ok, here, let me get it right.

UK: Great Britain (the island) Northern Ireland and the Isle Of Man.

All other places that it owns (Falklands, Gibraltar) are Overseas territories.

Great Britain: The Island: Scotland, England and Wales

England: England the country, excluding Wales and Scotland.

Ireland: Free forever more.
Éireann go Brách?

Also sorry, the Isle of Man is independent of the United Kingdom, just like your fair country. They have their own government and laws for pity's sake!. They will be none to pleased of this!.
Im sure all 50 of them are rallying in protest as we speak.
52 actually. Mrs. Henderson gave birth to twins.

For instance I know that England once used to mean not only England as a country but the enitre UK in its entirerity and sometime meant as the british empire itself, despite the fact that England is a single region.
Really? When did it ever mean that?

Even if it's true I feel insulted as a Scot... well, half-scot...

I feel as an Englishman i'm automatically hated by you scottish, irish and welsh people... Yet i'm from the North and we get insulted all the time by the south.

Can't we just blame the South of England, bomb them to oblivion, and make a new country. Perhaps we shall call it Welireyorkscotshire...

Poor southerners, love you really :p

Something I got from QI in the E (E for England) series. It was taken from the book "The History of England" or something like that and it stated that the usage, while incorrect, was used by some people rather unwittingly to address, either collectively or for vagueness, the United Kingdom as England. The term 'English Empire' also was said to mean empire of the English People as opposed to the British Empire but such errors while few were common.

I think the book was just listing the incorrect ways in which England was refereed to at the time.

Huh. I read about the Irish civil war, but I never knew the prejudice was as widespread as this. But I can sort of relate to it, in a roundabout way. Being an American, I do get a lot of crap from foreigners, chiefly those from the isles. We're labeled as an obese and ignorant culture, but I assure you I'm neither. It's also probably because we're such a successful nation, and aren't afraid to let you know. I'm not gloating; I would rather compare us to a child holding a gun, and the rest of the world is trying to disarm us, lest we hurt ourselves and others. Of course, that makes us feel threatened, and we'll rashly pull the trigger.
