Two of the most commonly chosen subjects in Universities and college's in the past couple of years were performing arts and art. Am I the only one who feels that these are rather redundant subjects? To me it seems that people are only doing these courses in order to do the least work possible and find some form of fame afterwards.

I know it's a bit cynical to say this; I studied media at Uni and I'm now working as a musician and a writer, but there's just so many people choosing those subjects and all I can see when I see them is a wasted education and a future in a customer service call center.

Thoughts?

Most art is useless and just nice to look like, it serves a cultural aspect but no practical purpose at all, so just about every art us useless.

My Thoughts:
1) The jerks who have no talent but think they're going to be famous and rich are going to have fun flipping my burgers.

2) They also need to stop taking the resources from the people that actually deserve them, the people who actually have talent and love the music.

That's about it. My thoughts are fairly concise.

I would have taken arts in college except for pretty much the same reason. I'm taking an accounting and finance program instead.

Are you talking about Art History, or Studio Art? Because Art History can be helpful when applying to something like Law school. It shows you can think critically about objects and stands out from all of the Sociology majors. Studio Art on the other hand, is fairly useless.

In the words of the great Oscar Wilde, "all art is useless".
It has no practical aplication, so you could argue that studying history etc. is time better spent, but art is not a waste of time if your heart is in it.

I caan appreciate that people want to take these subjects because they feel passionate for them, or enjoy doing them, but quite frankly, trying to make a career out of a hobby is a fruitless pursuit, especially when it comes to art. I hear so many would-be artists who complain about the industry and its "it's who you know" mentality, but they're kidding themselves if they think they're going to be an exception to the rule.

It's a massive waste of time, I like to draw, but I don't think I'd go out of my way to make a career out of it. Most I've ever got out of drawing was ten quid for someone asking me to design at tattoo for them. They weren't too pleased when I came back with the design which was just the word 'DILDO' in huge letters...

Cheese is useless did you know that? I mean, on it's own, you only really need one type of cheese to be useful, but there are thousands. Serve absolutely no purpose whatsoever but to inflate our own insane need for variety!

You know what. Most of everything is stupid and useless! I don't know why we don't all just live in perfectly square un-adorned houses. Wear the same yet functional clothes. The one type of food that provides all our dietary requirements. Get rid of everything that makes us think too, after all, we don't need to think to live, no, we just need to trudge back and forth to and from the food pill, housing and clothing workshops. A perfect world!

Oh I'm sorry, I think I've started arguing using absurdities again. Carry on.

And seriously to the OP. How can you opine on the uselessness of the arts and yet in the same post claim to be a musician and a writer? Shame on you! If you had any sense you would have chosen a profession in opposition of the one you're complaining about. Maybe a lumberjack or a farmer?

TO ALL GAME AND MOVIE COMPANIES : GET RID OF ALL OF YOUR ART DIRECTORS, YOUR CONCEPT ARTISTS, ANIMATORS, COSTUME DESIGNERS, MUSICIANS ANYTHING RELATED TO CREATIVITY AND ART!!

How could I not see this! like... woah art?... WHAT USE IS THAT!?? We might as well abolish all fashion designers too, as they draw and design stuff... like all artsy and stuff..

art is soooooooo useless.

Bitches don't know about graphic design apparently. Decent talent and some computer skills pretty much guarantee you a job as long as logos and web pages aren't beneath you.

Art has two categories
REAL ART: art that is fun to look at has no purpose other then to look pretty.
MODERN ART: totally useless pointless boring pieces of crap that can literally be pieces garbage, that it totally over priced and is only bought by rich people that have far too much money.

Art only has no practical application if you have no imagination. I hear that the Sistine Chapel makes for a fine umbrella.

Anyways, I know a lot of people with those degrees either want to do thier own thing, or don't care about the kind of degree and are just trying to better themselves in the field for personal reasons.

I feel that people should pursue their passions, whatever it may be. You shouldn't go to school for art if you "like to draw", as you say. You should go to school for art if you LOVE to draw, if drawing is your life and passion. If you really want to be an artist, you should try! I think the biggest problem with taking something like fine arts is that a lot of it relies on inert talent. You learn techniques, and it no doubt helps, but art seems like something that doesn't really require a formal education to be good or well appreciated.

Monash univeristy in Melbourne was once infamous for having this plaque above the toilet roll dispensor in the mens toilets.

'Arts Degrees' Please help yourself.

Yeah, arts is a load of rubbish (says the snobby med school student).

Well excuse them for attempting to being people's attention to beauty in the world.

Without professional artists your drawings would be no better than a handprint on a wall

to me i think the in-fad subject is psychology or law.

the arts etc are comparatively easy to other subjects, but they do lead to subjects like advertising etc, and are therefore not 100% useless
O gosh if I had a dollar for every freshy saying they are a psyche major...And your right about people wanting to do law, then they realize that maintaining that 3.5+ GPA is hard and just let go of that goal.
