The Ripper in Dead Space. Ammo was plentiful and each shot lasted for a good 5 seconds.
A3-21's plasma rifle in Fallout 3. Never fails to turn everything in the vicinity into a puddle of green goo.

MGS4 I rely on the trusty M4 Custom. can literally take down anything. Although, I also love the Desert Eagle barrel extension. And on resistance 2, the Wraith. Especially online.

The Xuanlong Assault rifle in fallout 3... absolutely murders every baddy in the game to the point it gets a likkle too easy!

Still, it's so hard to find that it is a real treat to get it.

It totally depends on the type of game. Amongst others: COD2-Mosin Nagant or M1 Garand, COD4-Knife and Desert Eagle, FC2-That little silenced pistol is ace. L4D-Combat Shotgun. The list goes on.

In Gears of War 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company, I never dropped the sniper rifle, even if I would find a nuke that would win me the game.

Combat Shotgun in Fallout 3 comes to mind, seems to work better then most weapons when your not in V.A.T.S.

In most shooters? Probably a shotgun or revolver. If I have more selection? Flamethrower or rocket launcher. For a backup melee weapon, shishkebab from Fallout for sure.

For my all time favorite gotta-have weapon though, it would have to be the mega missiles from the Descent series. Total devastation, complete with fire and forget guidance

Agreed shotguns especially are a can't lose close range firearm in all games, I've never disliked them in any games i've played. in L4D for instance mmm zombie killin with a shotgun...

and I vote shishkebab for melee weapon as well, I mean you carve em and BBQ all in one! what's not to love.

and mate I loved descent series, megas were great, but i really fell in love with the earth shakers from D2 and the black shark missile in D3... those were fun, of course they also had this horrible way of killing me too if i wasn't extremely careful in deployment.

For me it was the main pistol (has a very complicated name) from metal gear solid 3. I ended up with a slight emotional attachment to that gun. I could head shot from any distance, after playing it for about 2 years, I could head shot continuously like a machine. Aww man I miss my gun, shame I leant mgs3 to a mate. But hey, I still have it in mgs4!
