I'm the co-author of the article (the Nick half). I wrote all the stuff on the second page.

Neither me nor Derek condone the trolling/spam/whatever.
Two Questions.

Didn't you think about the consequences?
How did you learn about her anyway?
If by "the consequences" you mean "the chance that someone would read the article, post it on /b/, and have an all-out raid lead to the site being taken down," then no. We had no way of predicting that. We didn't tell people to troll her, we said "this forum is weird" and moved on.

Derek wrote the entry and found the site. Here's his explanation of how he found it:
I remember coming across the bloody board long before this article was even pitched; back when I was on digg, I remember someone posted a link to a similar message board with a whole bunch of posts from one user. That site went dark, but one of the commenters mentioned the bloody board, and while I was researching for this article, I remembered it. After that, a little googling got me to the website.

Some people were going straight there from cracked.

We had no way of predicting that.
You have a brain. You have reasoning skills. You have imagination. Presumably, you have some experience with human interaction.
Many people in both the cracked comments and on the board itself said "When I read the article, I knew this would happen".
We didn't tell people to troll her, we said "this forum is weird" and moved on.
Welcome to the internet. You'll find it is a savage place, where loners ridicule other loners for being different in order to make themselves feel better on a regular basis.

Pointing out to others that "someone is weird" and not expecting them to do anything is very naïve.
People are dicks, people on the internet even more so. If it can be trolled, it will be trolled. The internet has been this way for at least 12 years, and I don't even frequent 4chan.

Don't get me wrong, jamie_marsters is a terrible person, who only makes friends with people online in order to help her make money.
She is getting what she deserves, but Derek is responsible for this, and calling attention to a sad loner is a dick thing to do, on the internet or otherwise.
