Metroid Prime Trilogy is three of the greatest games ever made, two of which have improved controls. If you can't get trilogy, get corruption.
Super Mario Galaxy is the best 3d Mario I have had the joy of playing, and I have played all of them.
Twilight princess is a grand old time.
Brawl is Brawl, the only way you can hate it is if you are pulling hatred out of your ass for no reason.
No More Heroes (1 and 2) are just the type of game you need to play.
Mario Kart For all that racing goodness without the burdens of stupid things like realism.
Tatsunoko VS. Capcom for a more traditional fighter than brawl.
Fire Emblem: Radiant dawn is the best turn based strategy on the market and everyone knows TBS > RTS.
Other stuff I don't want to bother explaining: Muramasa, DeBlob, Wario Land: Shake it, Battalion wars 2, The conduit, Zack N' Wiki, Any rail shooter attached to a big name (Dead space, Resident evil,House of the dead), Madworld.
That's everything off the top of my head.

I was sadly greatly put off of ever getting Brawl by a college friend a year back. Not because he hated it no, but because he liked it a little too much. Every day through out that course all he ever said had to have some thing to do with Brawl. You know like Walter in Big Lebowski would try and link every conversation he had to Vietnam... well that but with Brawl. However having not seen him or heard from him in a long while I'm willing to try it and I've heard it's a lot like Melee (one of my favourite Gamecube games) only a better story, improved graphics and more characters.

If I were you, I'd just buy lots of classics for the Virtual Console. Like TLoZ:OoT, TLoZ:MM, Super Mario Bros. 3 and so on.

Punch Out!! - an arcade style boxing game and a remake of an old Nintendo game. If you have played the original, you'll love the update. If not, it doesn't matter. It is still very funny, challenging, and looks great.

Okami - sort of in the Zelda mold of platforming and adventure, but uses Japanese Shinto mythology as a basis. Has a long, expansive story. Interesting, if easy, and often verbose (their is a huge amount of hand holding, and you'll get hours of unskippable dialogue sequences which are often unecessary). The aesthetically beautiful and unique.

De Blob - a sandbox style "paint em up". Basically a sophisticated colouring game in which you (De Blob) must defeat a comically inept police state by graffitiing all over the buildings. A lot better than it first sounds. Again, an easy game.

Trauma Centre: Second Opinion - a fantasy surgery simulator. Notable at being harder to do than real surgery. Has annoying story and characters, but they are tolerable compared to the amount of concentration and immersion you'll undergo.

Wii Points?... are these sort of like Microsoft points (I'm a 360 owner)??.
They're the same thing. It's 100 Wii Points to a dollar, and you buy games from the Wii Shop Channel with them.
I see. So the Wii is online then... does it cost to go online with the Wii? or is it just a case of sticking in the ethernet cable and going through a few details (Email address and so forth).
If you have wired internet, you'll need to purchase an adapter/dongle that plugs into the Wii and that you plug the ethernet cable into. This dongle is a Wii only item (though it's available in versions not made by Nintendo for a little cheaper) so it's not likely something you'll just find in your local Radio Shack with the other cable adapters.

As for the Wii online experience.. there really isn't one, so don't get too excited even if it is free to access. The best part of Wii's online is really the virtual console (aka the old games store as the indie selection is pretty sparse) as it has a pretty good variety of games from not only previous Nintendo systems but others as well (Sega Master System, Genesis, TG16, etc.). True online play is hard to find and even when you do find it, you're stuck dealing with the Friend Code system (nothing like the ease and simplicity of Live).

Who said Red Steel? That is an appalling game. Why else would they make a sequel that looks different from the first game in every way conceivable? Has the sequel come out yet?

And you're gonna want to check out Tales of Symphonia (GCN) and it's sequel (Wii). Very story oriented, although the second had to deal with a few budget cuts unfortunately.

i reckon you have enough wii suggestions, so...

get a gamecube controller. Buy Super mario sunshine and The legend of zelda: wind waker. Mario is about £7 on ebay - best £7 i ever spent. Zelda is pretty rare and expensive now though.
