Ever?... wow.
I would have to say a tie between-
Ellen Ripley (Alien,s) and Jesse Custer (Preacher)
They're two characters who show remarkable strength and depth in character based on their lives and their psychology- and both go through tremendous ordeals that take them through severe highs and severe lows that additionally define themselves. We get to know them in smaller, 'candid' moments of them that reveal their motivations and their feelings on things that especially show their weaknesses.
Most importantly, though. They don't always come out on top. They lose, they get into trouble and barely get out of situations and have to lose those close to them and grow through their loses. Giving them more character and allows the reader/watcher to see them grow. These are not always done with dialogue, as well- a very important factor of a well-written character
