Thanks to homonyms and the way most people think these days many famous/infamous quotes have been altered and given new meanings over the years.

So I ask you what quotes do you believe to be the most misconstrued or defiled in todays day and age?

Personnaly I'm putting my money on a certain quote from Star Wars...

EDIT: Point taken and it's been corrected

I believe the word you're looking for is "misconstrued".

And what Star Wars quote are you referring to? I don't think it's as obvious as you make it out to be...

The one that annoys me is from Dirty Harry, everyone says it as "Do ya feel lucky, punk?" when it was really:
Dirty Harry said:
Well you gotta ask yourself one question, "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya? Punk?
Oh, and it's spelt misconstrued.

[small]Am I missing something? I don't know what the Star Wars quote he references is, because there are hundreds of them![/small]

Dear god, I hate it when people misquote that. It happens so much, too!
And I have no clue what Star Wars quote he can be talking about, obviously I didn't watch them hard enough. *Stares into TV screen until eyes melt.*

"Let there be Light" -God

it was at this moment, in fact, that God created the Death Note series

Wait, I know which one he's talking about now. He's referring to "Luke, I am your father". When it's actually "No. I am your father."

"If there is no God, everything is permissible."

One of the biggest arguments in favor of religion? Actually, this quote is always taken out of context. The character in The Brothers Karamazov that actually said this was one Pavel Smerdyakov, who is repeatedly shown to be an idiot and totally lacking in moral conscience.

What Star Wars quote? I can name three right off the bat.

1. "I have a bad feeling about this..."
2. "I have altered the deal. Pray that I don't alter it any further."
3. "Always gargle before space travel. Wokka wokka!"

...

All right, so the last one was from Family Guy, but it was related to Star Wars.

OP: "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush."

You have no idea how many people giggle every time I say it.

I forgot about this one. I was surprised when I found this out.

"Alas, poor Yorrick. I knew him well"

Is actually

"Alas, poor Yorrick. I knew him, Horatio"

Perhaps misconstrued is the wrong word to describe teh quote in question, perhaps defiled is more accurate summary and the only reason I thought the quote would be common one was that a lot of my friends kept shouting it for the best part of a year, but I guess I was wrong.

Oh and taking a step back I realise your right in saying that hundreds of quotes from star wars have been misconstrued at some point.

Oh how I despise that. I believe I once yelled at someone for saying it wrong.
