Most religious arguments are stupid. Largely, I think, because the people who are arguing don't fully understand their own religion.

But the best stupid one I heard was "If you don't believe in the Bible, you're calling God a liar."

My response was "The Bible wasn't written by God. It was written by men inspired to explain and define God. It was also written in Latin and Aramaic two thousand years ago. Don't you think it's possible something may have gotten lost in the translation?"

Hi response: "Um...er...God doesn't lie."

Couldn't decide whether to slap him or myself...

It is true unfortunately, I am christian myself and sometimes I just have to leave the computer when I see some of their arguments.

I know! I can understand some slippery slope arguments, Like hobbes said, Giveth an Inch, he'll take a ell, in most cases where we are given some leeway we exploit it to see how far we can go- But this isn't something to exploit, it's making sure a minority gets the rights that were guerrenteed by the Decleration of Independance in the US.
I'm not from the US but I guess bigots are the same no matter where you are

Let's see: Recently?

"Why are you playing The Walking Dead? That's such a shitty game."
"Because I enjoy it, Why do you think it's shitty?"
"Because I haven't played it."

He does this for pretty much EVERY game I play. He'll ask me why I play a "shitty" game, and his reasoning behind why it's so shitty is because he's never played it.

or

"You should play Forge, It's such an epic game!"
"Why's that? How long have you been playing?"
"I haven't even tried it yet, but it's the best game ever."
**He buys it, and gifts me the extra copy, and we play a game together, and it's pretty terrible to be honest, though I did like the premise. It just needs a LOT more polish**

"... but the book was way better." It drives me crazy. Movies are their own thing. Books are their own thing. If a movie sucks, the book can't make it better and vice versa.

"I'm sorry, I just can't watch black-and-white movies. They just seem too old."

I've heard variations of this argument and it just seems really limiting and stupid. It's fine if you don't want to watch black and white shows: just means more time for me to spend on my own watching Twlight Zone and 12 Angry Men for the ump-teenth time...also the silent Phantom of the Opera, that too.

I look forward to a future where people says "I just can't watch anything if it's in 2D" [/sarcasm]

"They were associated with [thing that some group likely has a thing against already] therefore it was the cause of [the horrible tragedy the person was involved in]".

Latest example: Mass Effect was responsible for the shooting in Connecticut.

I can't coem up with enought situations people have said this to me and thought I'd just accept that without any backup info, whatsoever...
I've got to second this one. Just because that's the way it is doesn't mean that it isn't a problem.

Oh, how I loathe it when people use this.

Not as bad as something else? That. Doesn't. Change. Shit.

"Well, that's just your opinion."

AND I'VE PUT A GOOD DEAL OF EFFORT INTO EXPLAINING WHY IT IS MORE VALID THAN YOURS.

Did you think I read my beliefs off of fortune cookies? I have them for a reason. Of course it's an opinion (unless we're discussing something that's been scientifically proven). Let's try to figure out if it's a good opinion to have or not.

I see your friends point (its still stupid, but I do see it), and i tend to agree on second amendment/gun laws to where I have a feeling of relative indifference when i hear someone who before a tragedy had no care in the world now suddenly wants to sound like they've been on it their entire lives.

...

Other then that though, the guy who did the I deserve a tip for making your pizza thread not long ago, when someone tells me you cant let guys marry because it ruins the sanctity when all marriages (in the us) end with a 50% divorce rate, when a flyers fan tells me he/shes more of a fan because he's passionate (read an asshole), or when a detroit fan tells me they're so much better than a pens fan because they support their team and we almost lost ours twice int he same time frame they usually like to quote (which is why the tigers are pretty much on their last leg as team. cause you know, its easy to support a team when its winning), various little things like that.

But I think the worst was someone tried to tell me that Im less than them because they live in an income bracket (or more their parents do) thats roughly over twice (about $70K) of what I live in with my mother. Yes, you're such a better person than me because your parents make your money and give you anyhting you want. Please, tell me how great you are that youve never worked a day in your life while ive worked in entry level occupations and in a factory.

The first argument that springs to mind is one from this forum. Specifically it links the 'decline' in video games to directly to arcades not being popular anymore, by using a series of dubious or unproven assertions that link a train of thought together. It was a cousin of a slippery slope and an oversimplification that has stuck with me as one of the really weird arguments on this site.

Comparing my attraction to other men with a pedophile to a five year old child or a psychopath to a murder victim...granted most "arguments" against homosexuality/same-sex marriage tend to fall under slippery slope fallacies, falls equivalences, appeals to emotion ("It's just gross/wrong/sinful") and so forth, but it takes great leap of logic to think that a relationship between consenting adults is just like child-molestation.

There's currently a petition about having a gun in every classroom to protect against attacks such as happened in Connecticut...

Which is really freaking stupid when you think about it...

These guns will have to be easily accessible so that when an attacker unexpectedly comes in the teacher can react swiftly and take out the weapon before the shooter can adequately react. It's no use if the teacher has to open up a securely locked container with several safeties and then assemble the weapon whilst the shooter is killing his or her students. And we all know that the combination of children and easily accessible guns never have and never will cause any serious safety issues.

Should they decide to be very extra careful and actually secure these weapons there's of course always the possibility of a teacher in another classroom taking the time to access his or her weapon and rush over to attack the shooter, since clearly the best course of action in that scenario is to rush out leaving his or her students alone to engage the attacker instead of for example evacuating those students whilst they're still in relative safety. Engaging in an open firefight in the middle of a school is clearly the superior option that will lead to the least amount of casualties compared to getting your students the fuck out of there, it's not like stray bullets ever hit bystanders or anything.
im against that idea, if only because teachers have one of the most stressful jobs in our country right now due to parents, media, and government painting them as terrible people (not to mention dealing with kids). Give them tazers.

^This kind of thinking.

'Your argument is incompatible with my viewpoint, therefore it is wrong and I am going to dismiss it.'
It's actually 'your argument is only hate/fear and intolerance driven, with lack of fact or knowledge, therefore I am going to ignore it'
which is a statement, not an argument for or against anything, so you missed the point.

Btw, in it's extended version my original post would be: 'anything someone ever said against transgender, homosexuals or equal rights for people with other skincolors than white,'

It's not about viewpoints, it's about humanism...
