We all have at least one, right? That event in which a character dies and it leaves us outraged, because it either makes no sense or it is so sudden and out of place that it leaves us frothing at the mouth. What are yours? (Also, needless to say, this post contains spoilers).

The most prominent on my mind is Fallout 3.

Not only because of how out of the blue the matter appears, but also because some of your companions could do it without dieing -hell, some would HEAL!- but they won't. Why? Because DUTY! AKA forced shoehorned choice between DERPHEROICSACRIFICEDERP or make an innocent woman sacrifice herself. God damn it, Bethesda...

Generally speaking every character death in a videogame is dumb. They usually happen during cutscenes that restrain you from being as awesome as you usually are during gameplay.

I feel that character death, done correctly, gives the player a sense of true danger. A sense that no one is invincible and that anyone can be harmed seriously if not killed outright.
That being said, there are some that do bother me...

Aerith/Aeris: Her death was kinda pointless in a world where phoenix down exists. It would have been better had she gone the way of Chrono from Chrono Triger, completely obliterated beyond saving. Then it would have made more sense than being stabbed by Sepiroth. I mean seriously, with all the cure spells, phoenix downs and life spells it made no sense. Story wise it fit, but mechanics wise it was definitely immersion breaking at its finest, or worst...

Mordin Solus: Ok, his death wasn't bad, it was heroic and absolutely heartwrenching especially with the Citadel content where you get a snippet of him attempting to sing Amazing Grace. But still for me, it was one of the worst deaths because of how attached I became to him. I loved Mordin's character, and yes he was truly a hero and his death was fitting, but still... I was so hollow after watching that scene I had to put down the game for a good while.

Oh and Rage from FFXII. I would have rather had him as my starting character and let Vaan die his brother's death. Ye gods I hate Vaan.

Other than those 3 I can't think of any that were out of context or just plain stupid.

The death of Victor Belmont in Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2. He was arguably the coolest modern Belmont that they introduced and not even thirty minutes into you meeting him, he's killed off. I was so depressed that I had to stop playing for awhile.

im going to just assume nobody will care about this spoiler, since the finale was such a pile of garbage. Deb's death at the end of Dexter was absolutely moronic.

Judge Ghis dies after attempting to test a legendary magic absorbing stone in the engine of his ship (that is powered by magic!), while in midflight...and having knowledge on what the stone does.
This isn't a death because he didn't know what would happen, he knew what almost certainly the stone would do, and he decided screw it you only live once and killed off himself and all his forces.

Not an official death (in other words, it wasn't scripted to happen), but this one pissed me off to no end:

In State of Decay, a side mission to hunt down a armored zombie popped up. Decided to do it since it should of been quick and easy. I was playing as Marcus (the guy you start out as, and one of the best characters to use), so it should of only taken a few seconds to do. The guy who wanted to do the hunt was Ed (the guy with you at the start of the game), which was another strong character, so there was no worries at all.

Except for the fact that the little warehouse the armored zombie was in was full of regular zombies, and had a feral. Ed's AI went full on derp, and all he'd do was stand in the doorway and make exclamations about how horrible it was. The feral soon knocked Marcus down and tore him in half. The game autosaved during this, so he was perma dead.

I got super pissed at Ed after that.

Kodlak Whitemane's death literally made me stop one of my play throughs because of how stupid it was. Yes, let's barely characterize this character outside of the fact that he wants to be cured of lycanthropy, and then let's kill him right before you cure him. I was just shaking my head when it happened and basically said, "That's it! I really don't want to have any character associated with the Campions at all. Their plot is just to annoying."

Fontaine. Now, I have a serious issue with cutscenes that have your character suddenly losing right after kicking the enemy's ass. After defeating Fontaine, they pull this kind of, "Oh, no, the enemy you just beat actually beat you. Ha ha!" As a result, it took the Little Sisters killing him to save you, even though you, as the player, just proved yourself better than Fontaine.

To me, it just kills the immersion, and I know it sort of fits with BioShock's main theme of lacking agency, but it still didn't make that scene any better. Besides, I get annoyed even if it doesn't lead to a death, such as when it happened after the first Saren fight in Mass Effect or the Deathmold fight in The Witcher 2.

Also, any poorly done escort quest. Every time I lose because the idiot AI I'm protecting decides to run into enemy fire infuriates me.

You should have continued the quest because you still cure him in the end. Remember that in Skyrim and the Elder Scrolls in general, death is never final. Although I agree that their whole plot is quite stupid. But then again, so is the civil war's. And the Brotherhood's. And the Forsworn. And the Blades. Yeah, Skyrim's stories aren't very good.

As for the topic:
Roland. And that's coming right after Angel's death which I thought was also pointless but far less that Roland's. His death and the subsequent capture of Lilith is Cutscene Incompetence cranked to 12. Yeah, we're past the 11 for that. And that seriously pissed me the fuck off.

My character in GTA V fell off her bike by no fault of my own and landed under a piece of debris. She tried to get up repeatedly, but only smacker her head against the wreckage until she died.

So seconded. She should have been the one character to survive, everybody else should have died including bland blonde girl. For some reason the only major character to live was the one nobody cares about at all. That's the sure sign of a writer who has lost their way, creepy murder fetish lady survives and Deb is killed off because they can't figure out how to shock us anymore.

<spoiler=Mass Effect>Ashley or Kaidan. It is a pretty silly scenario, not because of the story telling aspect, but because of the way that the conversation mechanic works in Mass Effect. You can literally wait for hours, standing on top of that building, deciding who lives and who dies, unable to attempt to save both characters, but the second that you select one, it instantly seals their fate.
<spoiler=Mass Effect 3>Thane Krios. When he was killed after Kai Leng stabbed him, despite Thane being presented to you as being one of the universe's best assassin's, yet he was stabbed and killed by a character that had never been in the series prior to Mass Effect 3. Sure, Thane was ill, but I would have expected Thane to have at least done something to Kai Leng, but instead Kai Leng got away without a scratch, and one squad member dead.

Thane in Mass Effect 3 is a pretty stupid death scene.
I mean seriously, after he got stabbed by Kai Leng I was expecting him to say "Shepard! Why didn't you shoot him? I was distracting him so you could shoot him!"

But everything in Mass Effect 3 was retarded so it's not fair to single out that part.

How about Roland from Borderlands 2. New-You's aren't cannon... go fuck yourselves.

I always thought Phoenix Down brought someone back from being unconcious. After all, she's not the only character that died in that game. Also, I had the impression that the death was instantaneous, since they had the sense to avoid some big, drawn out death scene.
