When the protagonist in Persona 3 passes away at the end of the game, I really was upset, as well as Sninjiro. How the hell does such a badass die like that?! Also Rurik in the original guild wars pissed me off so bad

The braindead vanilla ending.

Fallout 3 is a horrifically cretinous game. The main storyline is total and utter sh*te.

But among the most cretinous parts of it is the vanilla version ending that has you kill yourself because your retardedly stupid father trashed his own machine for no reason at all.

I am so glad I got the GOTY version, with all the dlc.

President John Henry Eden

There is no reason why you can't side with the enclave. But, as said, the story of FO3 is total and utter sh*te.
And the idiots and bethesda were too stupid to let you join them.

The most you can do is help President John Henry Eden.
And then, once you've helped him, and taken the modified F.E.V, he dies. He dies in every option.
Which is stupid, especially since he's a sentient computer.

If they'd kept him alive, it would have been awesome. But no, too sensible.
If they'd kept the entire enclave alive and let you join them, it'd have been awesome.
But no, too sensible.
I understood that the father was desperate to prevent the Enclave from gaining access to the water source. My problem is that even if you have Fawkes there, you can't tell him to go in and fix it because reasons. I realized as soon as the father pulled that move that someone would be going in there so I kept Fawkes around for that specific reason.

It was altered in DLC because they realized just how stupid it was. I don't doubt they got a lot of complaints.

I think Bethesda had to make someone the villain so they basically removed autonomy from the player. It does come across as weird that you don't really have a choice in that matter, though.

Vaas from Far Cry 3. Surprised no one's brought this up. He dies in a drug-induced stupor that occurs during a battle (quick-time events! Yay!) and once he's gone the investment in the story drops off considerably. It was an all-around dumb decision to kill him off when they did in the manner they did, though it was the best battle.

EDIT
I also realized it goes against his character. All this time he was willing to put his life on the line for you and your friends but suddenly that has to change to either make you die or be a complete dick. Through his inaction, he is condemning either you or your friends to death when he could resolve it with no ill effects. The reason he won't intervene? Because it's your fate, not his. In other words; "It's not my problem." No one has to die unless Fawkes decides so. He was the real villain in my eyes in that last scene.

I realize why they made the choice to make you decide on being a hero or not as it serves the core story, but in this context it is rather nonsensical.

Just because you were upset doesn't mean that death was dumb. Shinjiro was terminally ill and even then he managed to take TWO magnum bullets and stand up and walk afterwards. Self sacrifice doesn't get more badass than that. As for Protagonist, he was without his soul by that point and yet he managed to survive for weeks with the sheer force of will because of the promise he made with his friends.

Handsome Jack and Roland's Death in borderlands. Since I thought everything respwaned because of the Hypreion New you system which explain all of the enemies re spawning
I kind of found Handsome Jack's death a little odd. He literally owns every single respawn device on Pandora, and it's well established they can save people from the brink of any form of death, period. Unless they work by some kind of quantum subjective immortality thing where your consciousness is just moved to an alternate universe in which you don't die, but everyone else sees you die.
Handsome Jack isn't entered into any of the "New U" systems, probably so you couldn't hack said system to respawn in his body, and get into his stronghold that way.

Or because of vanity, one or the other.

Infamous: Second Son

So Reggie, Eugene, and Fetch fall into the ocean while completely encased in concrete, negating any powers that they could use.

Wait, no.

Fetch and Eugene show up during the last boss with no explanation on how they escaped their bonds. Not only did they both survive drowning, but neither one thought it was a good idea to save Reggie from drowning. They fell in the water first and were more heavily encased in concrete, whereas Reggie only had his legs encased.

Essentially Reggie drowned because the plot needed him to drown.

Judge Ghis dies after attempting to test a legendary magic absorbing stone in the engine of his ship (that is powered by magic!), while in midflight...and having knowledge on what the stone does.
This isn't a death because he didn't know what would happen, he knew what almost certainly the stone would do, and he decided screw it you only live once and killed off himself and all his forces.
To be fair, he wanted to make sure it wasn't a fake, he probably underestimated the stone's power.
The problem with that is they later establish that Arcadia has labs that can safely test such things no problem.

I remember in GW1 one of the Shinning Blade leaders doing one the "I'll hold them off so you can escape" thing...but she gives her bow to another NPC because she "won't need it where she's going", runs straight into the middle of a group of mursaat and instantly dies.

Well it was a brave thought I guess? I would have expected a ranger would be a bit smarter about it than doing deadhead charge without their primary weapon.
GW1 also had rurik, which was pretty high up on the dumb deaths list. Then again, GW1 was made as a pvp game with pve attached as an afterthought, so I don't really blame it for having dumb plot/characters/etc.
Rurik's death was dumb but I'm just happy he did die so I never had to escort him with him aggroing every enemy on the map or glitching and running straight into the group he just said to avoid again.
I think the plot of Factions was actually pretty decent but yeah...no one plays GW for the plot. The only time I seem people praising the GW1 plot is when they are bashing GW2.

Probably any game where there's a canon way to bring people back to life have deaths that are really dumb. It is odd that the only permanent way for someone to die is always not in a gameplay segment.

The glass cannon blast depleted their shields right before they exited the building so...

Legion's "death".

It's so stupid. WHY does he have to sacrifice himself exactly?

Not to mention, Legion goes to great pains (in ME2 & 3) to explain that geth are more then just the physical platforms you see before you. Geth are software.

He even brings it up again during the Geth Dreadnought mission, only a couple of missions prior, that "geth do not use escape shuttles, because they don't need them".
If a geth ship is about to be destroyed, all the geth within simply upload themselves elsewhere. Their physical platforms are not necessary.

SO WHY DOESN'T LEGION UPLOAD HIMSELF ELSEWHERE WHEN HE HAS TO UPLOAD THE REAPER CODE TO ALL GETH?!
It's like the writers completely forgot the lore they'd already established up to that point, just to shoehorn in a silly death scene.
I always thought that the reason Geth don't fear for their shells is that since they are part of the collective, then ideas, memories, experiences and all that are shared, so they're not technically dying. However, with Legion, his integration with the Reaper code necessarily needs his termination, because it's his code, his essence, being distributed, not ideas and so forth. Again, this is just an assumption on my part, if there's sources saying otherwise, please correct me.

No, even assuming it did shatter their shields, they had plenty of time to regen. Plus they had just said the covenant were retreating, and it looks like there wasn't an opening for the sniper to even shoot her through, not to mention that given the only weapon it could be, it would have to have been from rather close range since it wasn't a real sniper rifle.

Um. Ivy from Sonichu. After her untimely death because "waaah my faek grlfriend is Dead buy my t-shirts unless ur gay" on the part of the creator, we are treated to a badly drawn, badly coloured, un-inked drawing accompanied by a comic-sans, badly organised text wall detailing how she died with horrible grammar.

She hung herself in an elevator shaft by accident because she couldn't see Chris-chan. That sentence made no sense at all, yet that's the explanation given for her death. Oh, and so Chris can bone more fantasy chicks including his fake twin-sister-daughter. I don't know, this man is insane.

Dom in GoW3. In my playthrough with my friend, I always played Dom. I liked him a lot more then Marcus, so I always call dibs. Shit gets real for Dom throughout the series, but his death in GoW3 was horrible, how it was handled was just shotty. It's said that he somehow saved the day, but there were MANY ways he could have saved the day AND avoided dying. Then for the rest of the game I was left switching between different characters. Wasn't very epic from then on... It was like they Killed Luigi.

Good to know I'm not the only person that didn't like Mass Effect 3 at all. I adore the first game, warts and all, and the second was a much better shooter, but 3 was an absolute chore to get through. I didn't give a fuck about anything or anyone.

OT: Cortana in Halo 4, another execrable experience. I fell in love with the Halo EU, read most of the books, up to The Cole Protocol anyways, that was also just boring as hell, and the Bungie games. Then M$ tried to shoehorn all sorts of stuff into and Halo 4 (and Reach) disrespected a lot of the canon that was set up by Eric Nylund and it ruined the experience. But Cortana's was just stupid, she should've burnt out a good year before the game even started.

In Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness, a character gets locked in a closet off screen. When Lara opens it, the character just falls over dead.

Lara yells "What the hell is going on here!?"

She - and the player - never get an answer.

Fair enough, I do agree it was a stupid move on his part, but its hardly the worst that's happened in this game actually. Since you do have an interest in XII and do care about the plot, I recommend reading the FF XII travelog in the user reviews section, you'll have a good laugh.

Your death at the end of Fallout 3 has nothing to do with your father.

You die because the purifier was backed up from damage taken during Liberty Prime's assault, and possible Enclave sabotage as they left knowing they had lost.

Nothing James did damaged the machine at all.

I have never understood why people think this when Doctor Li outright yells over the intercom at the purifier that the machine is going to blow up because of damage it took during the fight, and possible enclave sabotage, especially when you have to manually activate the intercom and listen to her say it before you can chose to go into the purifier or have Sarah do it.

Meriatressia said:

Besides the fact they are genocidal madmen, who want to kill everything that isn't them, and siding with them would result in a world with nothing in it, and thus would prevent any possible future games from being made.

Same reason you cant join The Enclave in Fallout 2, or the Calculator in Fallout Tactics.

But yeah, Eli's death at the end of Half Life 2 Episode 2 was pretty dumb, it comes utterly out of nowhere, and really serves no prupose besides to be a super "dramatic" means to end the game.

Whats more, is that Valve had to make the giant robot, that could easily smash the advisers, wander off for unexplained reasons to have this scene work.

I'm going to have to submit two deaths from Bioshock: Burial At Sea episode 2...

And they both belong to Elizabeth.

Firstly, after ending the first episode of this DLC without even looking surprised at the fact that Bookerstock just go impaled by a Big Daddy, we reveal that Elizabeth actually died immediately after at the hands of the Big Daddy, and did so practically BEGGING FOR MERCY. The girl who levelled up into an interdimensional demigod in the final level, capable of seeing all possibilities in the multiverse and teleporting the oncoming Songbird into the crushing depths of the Atlantic, somehow ends up getting killed by a Big Daddy without putting up any kind of a fight or even foreseeing what was about to happen. And after the wonderful display of otherworldly knowledge and confidence we saw at the end of the original game, it's all wiped away in favour of seeing her gibbering in terror before being killed by a run-of-the-mill Big Daddy and returning to life as a gibbering, confused, clueless girl.

And then, after losing all her powers for a quirk of in-universe physics that have never been mentioned before, and revealing to the player that the entire story of Bioshock Infinite was retconned a waste of time - because Columbia and Comstock are both still around in multiple universes, still planning to "drown in flame the mountains" and likely still planning to move on to other dimensions afterwards and destroy them too and Booker died for nothing and so does Elizabeth and AAAAAAAAARRRH

Ahem.

At the end of the DLC, she gets beaten to death by Atlas almost as an afterthought. Oh sure, this is supposed to be a noble sacrifice and an innocent victim will live because of her and TEH REEL SAVYOR OF RAPCHUR will have a chance to save the Little Sisters and blah-de-blah... but the thing is, I have no reason to care about either of these characters: Sally or whoever the hell the little brat was has no personality, we never learn anything of interest about her, we never see any character to her other than "Generic Little Sister" or "Little Miss McGuffin"; and Jack is a blank slate stand-in for players in the first game - it's hard to remake him into some kind of guaranteed saviour when a) the first game allows the player to disprove this prophecy by killing the Little Sisters, and b) even if this DLC somehow manages to guarantee Jack saves the Little Sisters (which still makes no sense given that my playthrough still has at least 4 Little Sister casualties), it only happened in one universe. In millions of other Raptures, the Little Sisters are deader than disco, Sally Shithead included.

And so, Elizabeth - one of the best characters in the entire franchise - slowly dies in agony, forgotten and unmourned by everyone except a non-character (who isn't likely to remember much about her thanks to all the brainwashing). As a final insult, her body is drained of ADAM by the same non-character before being left to rot in a forgotten corner of a ruined city; her attempt to save the multiverse was a failure, and chances are the attempt to save the Little Sisters goes the same way.

Congratulations, Ken Levine: you've made a DLC that's vastly inferior to Bioshock Infinite fanfiction, and cast Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy upon the entire franchise in the process.

I'm in season 6 and you just ruined it for me!

Or maybe start by stating which series this is a spoiler for (to give us time to move on) instead of AFTER spoiling it.

If I could punch you in the face through the internet right now, I probably would.
if youre on season six then you should be aware that the show only goes downhill from there. by the time you begin the final season you may not even want to watch it anymore.

While it did annoy me to no end, I also wonder why Jack doesn't get resurrected. I can only imagine that Jack has deleted the pattern from the New You for Roland to die. Even then, its stretching it too much.
