Uisng our stupid, stupid, human instincts to exploit everything we are given to a bad thing. Nuclear energy that could power the entire Earth without pollution? We weaponize it. Given an Earth, full of beautiful things that all of us should take our time to enjoy? We are slowly killing it. Sometimes, the human race is the worst thing that has ever happened to this planet. Dinosaurs had been around for billions of year, and the Earth stayed the same. Then, we come along and become "civilised" and what do we do in the space of time that is almost one second compared to the history of the planet? We completely and utterly **** things up.

Hello ppl's,

So I'm watching discovery last night and it's some space program about all the neato shit you can find beyond our solar system. Ok, cool. They start talking about the satellite we sent out like 20 years ago called "Voyageur" 1? maybe 2? not sure. you probably have heard of it even if you do not know the name. We put greeting messages in it in over 50 languages, we put our physiology, and something else...

That something else is what I have a problem with. We put the instructions on how to find earth in there. So now, whenever anyone finds the stupid thing, hopefully they are friendly or we are frickin toast.

Think. In EVERY sci-film, video game, whatever, the location of the homeworld is always the most closely guarded secret, and we have just sent the flipping thing out there for anyone to pick up.

I think it's the most colossally stupid thing we, as a race, have ever done.

Thoughts?

the bible. (IT IS FAKE!)
Well that was a complete and utter over generalization. Like most over generalizations it's complete and utter garbage.
Granted there are sections of the bible that are nothing more than political propaganda.
There are also other sections consisting of such things as poetry, prayers, metaphors, history, communal letters, philosophy, and legends to name a few. Each section serves it's own purpose and the book taken as a whole paints a picture of some people's struggle to connect with the unknown while dealing with their own humanity and even pettiness. Like every other militant atheist you gotta throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I'm guessing about a third of this thread deals with the whole "religion is bad" thing from both sides. I find it interesting how much is left out. While some of you argue about religions started in the eastern hemisphere I don't see a single mention of the tribal religions from the Americas. Both religious types and atheists seem to have this concept that since our brains are so wonderfully developed we must bend nature to our ideas about it. On the other side of the planet from where this concept started any number of tribes used religion to intuitively guide them to living as a part of nature. Not every tribe, some were warring freaks. Still an entire tradition existed of people who were deeply religious who believed in harmony with the world around them. They did pretty well until thirteen colonies worth of folks consisting of Christians, atheists masquerading as Christians and outright atheists marched across the continent and decimated the indigenous peoples. Religion wasn't the problem, it was the symptom. Greed was the problem including religious greed, or idealogical imperialism. Same thing happened in the eastern hemisphere when Rome (under pagans, atheists and Christians depending on the time period) decided everybody needed to think and live like they did. Just like the Jewish tradition we all need our scapegoat. God forbid we should look within ourselves at how our greed is affecting the world around us. Nope, gotta blame religion (or homosexuals or atheists or whichever group is the target of the moment.)

Really, should have stayed in the trees. Tree dwellers have a hard time imperializing everything and certainly don't build nuclear weapons to carry out dreams of empire with.

So many choices for this topic, but I suppose communism and what it has done embodies the worst things that have happened to humans and the fact it keeps on appealing to people despite its disastrous history.
Sorry my good fellow you are not correct in my opinion about disastrous history. Look at Cuba, they are working fine under communism. Both communism and capitalism fail at what they are meant to do. No system will ever be perfect. Look at America right now. There used to be solid economy is busting right now. Banks going bankrupt, car companies, people not being able to survive, it just doesn't work out.

What about religion? The deaths that have been caused by religion pale in comparison to communism. (I won't even get on the part that communism has been around for a tiny fraction of that of religion as well).

I can cite exact numbers if you wish of the deaths caused by Communist countries vs the biggest atrocities of religion. Let me know if you want to try this argument with me, you will lose, the numbers are there.
What about war?
I'm sure war has killed more people than communism.
What about Feudalism? I'm sure Feudalism has killed more people than Communism, in the hundreds of years it has been around.
And I think we can exclude political killings from the "Communism Deaths". And we can exclude the Russian and German (on the eastern front) casualties from World War 2 (As I'm quite sure Russia would have defended itself from Germany even if it wasn't communist). And what about all the people who die (and continue to die) for Freedom and Democracy?

Also, as an interesting aside on the whole 'religion is evil, only science makes sense' topic, science is more and more coming to the conclusion that humans are predisposed to creating or accepting religious beliefs.

In other words, religion is an adaptation, just like opposing thumbs or eyebrows, that has been created by evolution. Funny, that.
Opposable thumbs.

And yet the vast majority of technological advancements, later to be used for peaceful purposes, have come through war, including the internet...
The internet came about as a network for scientists to share data more effectively.
Re: your first reply...that adds what to the conversation, exactly? Everyone knows what I meant, and the meanings of 'opposing' and 'opposable' aren't even that far removed, anyway.

Re: Your second reply...Nope.

"The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is an agency of the United States Department of Defense responsible for the development of new technology for use by the military. DARPA has been responsible for funding the development of many technologies which have had a major impact on the world, including computer networking, as well as NLS, which was both the first hypertext system, and an important precursor to the contemporary ubiquitous graphical user interface."

"In the area of information processing, DARPA made great strides in [quite a lot of other stuff]...and ultimately, the Internet".

Yes, it is from wikipedia, but wikipedia only has one more error per page on average than the Encyclopedia Britannica. Also, if you so wish, go to the DARPA website, or any source you consider more reliable. Happy hunting to prove me wrong...

Can i ask for a non-wikipedia source? Just so i know the numbers are solid.
Also; Hitlers relation to Communism?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mao_The_Unknown_Story This novel is where I got my figures from, wikipedia has the best picture :p

I said the Hitler one just out of comparison to a dictator we hold in a very infamous regard, instead of say the Russian leader we allied with who actually killed more people through his government.
"China scholars agree that the famine during the Great Leap Forward caused tens of millions of deaths. Chang and Halliday argue that this period accounts for roughly half of the 70 million total. An official estimate by Hu Yaobang in 1980 put the death toll at 20 million, whereas Philip Short in his 2000 book Mao: A Life found 20 to 30 million to be the most credible number. Chang and Halliday's figure is 37.67 million, which historian Stuart Schram indicated that he believes "may well be the most accurate."[7]

Professor R. J. Rummel published updated figures on world-wide democide in 2005, stating that he believed Chang and Halliday's estimates to be mostly correct and that he had revised his figures for China under Mao accordingly."

From the link you just gave me.
