Why do so many people believe that the entirety of the MMO community consists of useless drains on society, when many of them are productive members of their community?

Because expecting intelligence from the general public and (this is the important part) the media is like expecting yourself not to die when shot in the head with a magnum. The former gains justification for their horrendously stupid reasoning from the latter.

And also because all stereotypes ever made ever are based on naturally-obtained stupidity.

I play WoW, and have admitted it on several occasions on this site, and I have yet to be abused...

Then you're incredibly lucky.

Remember when EverQuest was the main MMORPG? Remember how everybody said the exact same things about EverQuest players?

Sadly, no, I didn't know that. I guess it's like McDonalds; every media form hates on it, just because it has become the big face of the industry.

And because their food causes cancer. No big deal.

Cancer? I thought it just made you fat and unattractive. Bah, I need to start researching the many causes of human hatred.

In my experience most of the hate for WoW on the internet comes from hardcore EVE-online players (for good reasons too).

All MMOs are full of dicks and retards and I have no idea if they are the majority but they certainly are the loudest. So its not hard to see why people form these stereotypes about the MMO player and you can't really blame them.

You can test this easily, go make a free trial account for EVE-online so you can post on the official forums, make a thread innocently saying that you have been scammed and you want to know when the GMs will give you your hard earned stuff back. I guarantee the community won't be helpful.
