I originally posted this in the xbox poll, but felt it may be more appropriate as a separate topic.

I think I understand Microsoft's reasoning now.

Earlier, I thought they were insane, seemingly alienating gamers and consumers in general with their strategies, but now, this key point was made confirmed things for me.

The post is still incredibly vague on trading in games, with Major Nelson saying that "game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers." It's up to third-party publishers to make the call, but there's no word on what "participating retailers" means, or any other details that might clear up this issue completely.
I shall reiterate.

It's up to third-party publishers to make the call
They are not marketing the Xbox One to consumers, they are marketing it to publishers.

They are offering this used game paying service as a huge boon to publishers, and innocently stating they are not enforcing it themselves. They are probably now going to publishers, nudging them and saying 'if you make a game with us, you don't have to worry about used games at all.' They then hope the publishers will then turn to Sony and go 'why can't you offer us the same thing?'

If Sony doesn't, the publishers may give more exclusives to Microsoft, giving them the edge in the console war. The exclusives will always win console wars.

And if Sony does bow down and do the same thing? Well great! Now the combined might of two of them will destroy used games utterly. Microsoft is sacrificing bad press now, for future sales. Either way, they win.

It really doesn't matter what the consumers in general think. They will swallow their disdain, and go with those exclusives.

So yeah, Microsoft doesn't even have to try to appease people or ease their worry. All they got to do is keep going, the publishers, and the games, will fall in line behind their console.

Any thoughts on this theory?

All the exclusives in the world won't win shit, if nobody owns the console. The recent backlash against Microsoft would have to be one of the biggest I've ever seen.

It's why I hope that there will be enough gamers that won't buy the xbone for exactly those reasons. It's probably not going to happen, and plenty of people will probably still buy it though. It's sadly how a lot of gamers are. They're weak willed, and when faced with their rights being stripped away and having to pay more and more for their games all they can think of is 'but but...I loved the previous installment and I want that game!' >_< These days the mentality of 'I want that so I will get it no matter what' is way too prevalent imo. Not just in games, but in all consumerism. Look at people, for instance, that 'can't afford a car' and struggle to get decently healthy food, yet still walk around with the newest iphone the day it comes out.

No exclusive in the world could get me to get a console I didn't want, that espouses practices that I cannot tolerate. I may be the minority here, but I'm quite comfortable in that position as always. Even if they had 20 games I HAD to have already in production, still no. I can just watch other people play them if I wanted to.

Until they can police the VIEWING of their content by ANYONE not sitting in from of their console and paying out the ass for it, then sorry I don't have to play their games.

Given that I can only think of ONE game in the entire Microsoft library since its original advent that I actually regret not being able to play, I sincerely doubt that they are even capable of producing an exclusive that would entice me.

That game was Tenchu Z, and from what I hear its not all that anyways. Looked pretty sweet at the time though

The success of the 360 proves otherwise. People are actually willing to pay a monthly subscription to XBL to be able to download patches and play multiplayer.

Many gamers are either uninformed or don't care. Many more will buy it just so they can play their favorite exclusives. This will probably be the most successful console of this generation.

Xbox1 is now the posterboy of wanting to enslave it's consumer base due to fear.

But you don't have to pay a subscription fee in order to download anything. The Gold accounts simply enable users to use multiplayer servers. Which honestly seems kind of fair to me. You can still use XBLA without a subscription.

See, that's exactly the problem: It seems fair to you. After the dust settles and exclusives are announced people will start thinking "It's not that bad", "I can live with it", "Seems fair" - just as they did with the 360.

You have a good point but hopefully the level of them bending consumers over a barrel makes it all moot.

Thing is, it's not really fair, no other platform charges money for the 'privilege' to connect to a server and I am constantly amazed that people are willing to shell out for something that is standard and expected to be free anywhere else.

Publishers aren't going to make a company money. The people buying the product do. This line of reasoning is suicidal.

Not so sure they will though, as Microsoft's recent moves have attempted to rip the foundations out of what gaming was built on,.

Things such as multiplayer have always been an added bonus which people could pay for as an addition to single player gaming, essentially it grew organically from a setup which people were already enjoying. Microsofts latest moves include doing things such as preventing people from lending each other games - a very core foundation which has always been a big part of gaming.

I think there will be far less people who can "live with it", as Microsoft are essentially trying to change the whole nature of gaming overnight, and people will just stick to what they know - e.g. PS4.

I don't see how "fair" has a great deal to do with it. It's not as if Microsoft hide the fact that their XBLA gold service is a paid service. Its up to the consumer to decide whether or not its worth it for them. Just because Sony don't charge, doesn't mean that it is an industry standard.

I have both a ps3 and an xbox 360. And back when both were reletivelt new, xbox360s online was better because of the fee . Since we are paying them , they have people actually working on making their online services better . While the ps3 has online issues . These issues were solved over time , but it WAS better for the xbox360 .

Also it's 4$ a month , you can find that kinda change on the streets . Hell i spend 4$ a day on energy drinks ...

OT: all the exclusives in the world would not make me buy that DRM box.

It's better because of the fee? PC games had multiplayer for far longer than that. People are still enjoying Counter Strike and team Fortress 2 and no monthly subscription. They might also convince you that having connect to XBL at least once a day and not being able to sell/trade your games will only make it better.

I do hope people don't buy it. I'm hoping that people will vote with their wallet and won't give this crap a chance.

Actually now that you mention it this is a pretty smart (dick headed but smart) strategy. if you can get the publishers on your side your going to have all the exclisives which is what will sell a console

Most servers for PC games are run by individuals or 3rd party organisations with other revenue streams. Different kettle of fish.

Don't get me wrong. Xbone can go die in a fire. But the XLBA thing isn't really a big deal.

The problem is, Microsoft have the numbers in front of them. Just like Blizzard did, when they added the RMAH to Diablo III and added an Always Online requirement to a Single Player game.

Yes, we're angry. But if we don't translate that anger into honest-to-god widespread rejection of the Xbone - posts of a forum are basically useless at this point - then it doesn't matter.

Microsoft are projecting nearly 400,000,000 Xbone sales across the life of the console. How many of those were allotted for "the core"? 40,000,000? 10%?

I really don't get what numbers they're following, though. As it stands right now, the features of the Xbone are pretty much useless outside of the US if not downright illegal, and that means that unless they do something about it, they've lost about 75%[footnote]yes, this is a random number based on the ratio of US against the rest of the world[/footnote] of their potential customers.

Captcha: small fries. Heh.
