Or, you know, it isn't meant for just the core gamer.

Although judging by the fact that I play and enjoy CoD, Forza and FIFA, maybe you see me as sort of beer-swilling moron, or whatever the phrasing you used was? Even though I hate beer.

Oh, and can we wait until Microsoft themselves have actually figured out what to do with pre-owned games and shit before bitching about it. Call them out on not knowing what they're doing, sure, but as far as I'm aware they haven't actually confirmed what they're doing, considering about 15 different "policies" have been flying about.

I've been reading the articles about the Xbox One since the press release and lurking the forums during the shitstorm over the admittedly horrendous features that have been announced.

I want to point out a few in particular. EDIT: Not all of these are inherently bad; they all just serve to prove my point.

1. The Xbone won't be able to connect to SDTVs out-of-the-box, and possibly at all.
2. The Xbone won't be able to play used games without some of the most draconican terms I've ever seen. Seriously, this is worse than anything EA has ever done.
3. The Xbone won't allow Indie games to self-publish, and basically screws over Indie gaming in every concievable way.
4. The Xbone has no backwards compatability.
5. Xbox 360 controllers won't work with the Xbone.
6. The Xbone is pushing itself as a multimedia system instead of a gaming console.
7. Call of Duty: Another One is going to be on the Xbox, and EA is talking about how excited they are for the console, which means Madden Roster Update will be on it as well.

Overall, the Xbone looks to be, above all else, expensive as hell. I don't know or care how the specs or the actual power of the system stacks up to a PC, but it's obvious that it's not *weak*, so the console is probably going to be more expensive than the 360. You can't buy the games used, so that's 60 bucks for each game. You have to have a fancy new HDTV, and you have to have high-speed internet at least once every 24 hours.

Now, obviously, this is a betrayal of many of the core features gamers hold dear. But you know who won't give a single damn about these problems?

The target audience of Call of Duty. The entitled, preppy fratboys who only own an Xbox to play Madden and Call of Duty anyway. The ones who get whatever they want out of mommy and daddy's checkbook. They don't buy used games anyway, because they buy Call of Duty and Madden as soon as they come out. They cease playing old games when the new ones are released, so backwards compatability won't matter. They don't give a single shit about Indie games. And they'd prefer a multimedia machine instead of a gaming console, because they only play two games on it anyway.

And they're going to be the reason that Xbone succeeds this generation.

Despite every core gamer I've ever read agreeing that whether they like the game or not, Call of Duty is absolutely what is turning mainstream gaming into this androgynous blob of shooters, Call of Duty Black Ops 2 sold 7.4 million copies in the launch month, and Modern Warfare 3 sold 8.8 million in the launch month. Source: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/183066/Numbers_show_The_Call_of_Duty_decline_looks_real.php I can't find hard numbers for Madden from a decent source, but I guarantee that they're way higher than a "niche" game has any right to be.

This shows that Microsoft *is* developing the Xbox for the largest demographic of gamers. It's just that that demo is not "core gamers".

So, before you post another hate thread on the Xbone, remember. It's not meant for you. It's meant for the beer-swilling pigs that make up the largest part of game sales.

EDIT: The term "beer-swilling pigs" isn't meant to indite all drinkers of beer, but is instead meant to reflect the voracity with which these parasites consume beer.
1. there will be ways to circumvent this, and on the flipside if you can afford a 400 - 500 dollar system you can afford a nice 32inch tv that goes about 200.

2. this is still speculation neither you nor I know what they're gonna do on that front.

3. maybe now we'll get something other than 5000 date sims on xbla, seriously some of those games are downright creepy.

4. if you know anything about processors you'd know that it's unrealistic to expect them to, x360 uses powerpc while x1 uses x86 and thus are incompatible.

5. maybe you didn't get the memo but x360 didn't let you use original xbox controllers, the fact that you made this a "reason" that it isn't core friendly is just ridiculous and you're just nitpicking at this point.

6. because that's all they've shown, the reveal on the 21st was an architectural reveal. Wait till E3 then if they fuck up there you'll be proven right.

7. I don't understand how you're complaining about this, why wouldn't cod and sports games be on the system? Just because you don't like them doesn't mean the millions who do aren't "core" gamers, You make yourself sound seriously elitist by saying so.

Price hasn't been discussed yet, now you're just spouting wild speculation again.
The hdtv thing is also moot, if you can afford a brand new system you can upgrade to a relatively nice tv for like 200 - 300 dollars. It's also been confirmed that used games DO work on the system too btw.

Just Because all they showed at the reveal was cod and multiple sports games doesn't make the fans of those games the target audience, Now you're just being petty. and as for the androgynous blob of shooters you speak of it's quite simple to explain my friend in 3 simple words: supply and demand.

most of the points you try to make are slipshod at best and bitchy at worst, we simply don't know enough at this point to come out with these statements of "microsoft betrayed core gamers" that you're coming out with, as many will say, stop criticizing based on speculation and on the logical absence of features that quite honestly was a little dumb to expect like 360 controllers working on the new system and just and i can't stress this enough WAIT until they reveal more at E3 where GAME announcements are made.

To be honest i haven't decided to either get the ps4 or the x1, their simply isn't enough information out their to make an informed decision just yet.

EDIT: and on the beer swilling pigs statement you made, way to make yourself sound like a total dick.

I'm perfectly fine with you stereotyping Call of Duty players. There are a lot better shooters out there. Actual gamers know that and those are the games that they'd rather play. Even the developers know that. Like Ken Levine. That's why we had that Bioshock: Infinite cover "controversy". There is truth in stereotypes sometimes.

Of course I don't think that EVERY COD player fits that description. But I do think that a vast majority of them do.
It's called an OPINION mate people like what they like.
I'm more prone to gears and CS:GO than cod, but as i said it's an opinion.

So basically this thing can be summed up as Microsoft wanting to get out of the gaming industry and into the general entertainment area. Wonderful.
Sometimes I wonder if that is actually worth trying for.

I mean, even Apple couldn't really get Apple TV off the ground and they have the backing of the iTunes store with music, movies and TV shows.

I am not sure who the Xbox One is for it seems to be aimed at people who really dont mind paying to get fucked over and spied on as long as they have TV, Sports and COD in one package.

There is literally zero reason to be excited about the Xbox One over the competition at best its a so what I will get it despite its flaws.

It is definitely not for core gamers its seems to be gearing up to be the very worst system to play games on to be honest.
wtf are you talking about spied on? You do realize that the thing you're suggesting is illegal right?
what purpose would spying on a bunch of people sitting on their couch pressing buttons serve?
You are seriously paranoid friend.

What cracks me up is that all Sony has to do now is release a console that is just a PS3 with upgraded hardware and BOOM! they'll clean up this generation. Just do it all like they already did but with better specs. Suddenly they get all the business.

Uninformed and/or apathetic core gamers exist, you know. Nothing I see on that list would worry someone who preorders the special edition and isn't interested in playing current generation games once the next comes along. Not all people who don't keep up with news, have principles in terms of what they're buying, or play indie games are therefore casual.

the xbone isnt meant for humans, let alone core gamers. as the thing physically required to play call of duty, yeah itll get those sales, but microsoft can hardly piggyback on the success of two franchises that arent even exclusive.

really the xbone one is so goddamned awful even the few people who are gigantic douchenozzles and just buy the console to play 2 games are kind of getting shafted as well as core gamers.

Honesty, Microsoft isn't interested in competing with Sony or Nintendo. They are competing against Apple for the Smart TV audience by including video games as an option.
Well yes... but by all accounts Apple is making a TV. They have some experience in this regard as they have long been making large superb consumer level monitors. Whereas MS... are trying to compete with Apple in this space by giving another box to attach to the TV... which does what the other boxes do... or what exclusive things it might do, such as internet streamed live TV, will be obsoleted with the next patch their competition gets, including the TV's themselves.

It's the same idiotic philosophy that gave us Windows 8. Consumers don't want a completely universal user experience. They want complete interoperability. They want your TV to be able to talk to your computer and your tablet and your phone etc etc etc. They want a smooth seamless intergration, not a total all in one experience.

Looking at the presentation, the only real selling point in it of any true consumer interest or benefit is Football. That's it. Unless of course you have some fetish where you are into MS listening to your heartbeat through your TV?

Thanks for referring to me as an "entitled frat boy" since I like Madden and COD, his system sounds just right for me and my bros to play the hell out of.

Why is fraternity membership such a bad thing?
Because "entitled, preppy fratboys" can't possibly be gamers too, obviously. Those jock brains can't understand anything more than "Run & Shoot!" and they only ever buy roster updates to games they already owned! (Let's completely disregard the fact that Madden and NCAA Football are actually pretty damn deep games when you get into things, of course, because it doesn't support our strawman point!)

[sub][sub][sub]Sarcasm[sup]TM[/sup], of course.[/sub][/sub][/sub]
^^^All my this. It makes me annoyed when a community involving something I love just want to exclude as many people as possible from our hobby for completely contrived reasons. Some of my friends are dude-bros thank you very much. And I at least have gaming in common with them (considering I'm an out of shape Internet dweller)

According to the ESA, the average game player is 30 years old. [link]http://www.theesa.com/facts/[/link]

So, assuming that Microsoft is targeting an imagined fratboy-dudebro demographic- and I'm not saying they are- they are again cutting out a huge potential portion of the market, the same way that they're doing by apparently ignoring SDTV, homes without always-on broadband connections, and...

Well, at this point there's a list of well-documented concerns, so no need to rehash; let's just say anyone who is a) in the market for a gaming device b) has serious concerns with one or more of those issues and c) has an option available (PS4, Wii-U, PC, Apple or Android device) that doesn't raise the same concern(s) they have with the XBone.

That's a stupidly large number of people whose purchasing plans Microsoft would have just decided don't matter. Admittedly, I am not beyond considering the possibility that Microsoft's internal mission statement now reads "Go bigtime stupid or go home", but it's a little credibility-straining that they would simply decide to only market to such a limited demo in addition to all the people excluded by the hell they've raised with technical and licensing issues.

Sidetrack: for the record, it's technically true that Microsoft's policy on independent games presently appears to be the same as on the 360, but the 360 doesn't allow independent publishing either, and their policies towards the independents have gotten worse while their competition's have been improving. To say that the XBone won't allow self-publishing and screws over indie gaming in every conceivable way might be hyperbolic, but it isn't entirely inaccurate.

Yeah, no, this is complete bullshit. I mean do you honestly think that there's no way that around 400 dollars would be the maximum that a person would put into their budget for electronics? Also the logic behind that statement itself is flawed because it leads to an infinite loop, (i.e. well if they can afford to spend 400 tey can afford to spend 600, if they can afford to spend 600 then they can afford to spend 800, if they're really able to spend 800 they can probably afford to go up to 1000, ad infinitum).

EDIT: Since I know I'm going to be accused of strawmanning here, i'm actually going to break down the argument here so everyone can see where I'm coming from. The argument made above, when broken down is this

1. If a person can afford amount X on an entertainment system, then they can afford to spend amount Y, since Y is only a small amount more than amount X

2. this person can afford to spend amount x
---------------------------------
3. The person can afford to spend amount y

now looking at what the actual argument here is stating, what prevents you from just re-applying premises 1 and 2 to the conclusion over and over again on to infinity

Data mining. Sitting I front of your xbox and you say "gee, I could go for a Dr. Pepper right now" and then Microsoft sells that data to Pepsi so they know to market to your demographic. It's probably too illegal and risky for Microsoft to do but believe it or not, there's patents for this stuff. Not to mention the possibility of it getting hacked and spied on like with Web cams (the console is on all time)

I don't think the Kinect will amount to anything but people have reasons to be concerned

I mean, could you stereotype any harder if you tried?
I don't have much to add to the post but this seems to be the entire point of the discussion.

7. I stopped buying sports games when they decided to cancel internet support for games that are barely over a year old. I don't know if anybody has talked about that but I think that's a load of bullshit.

I've played call of duty a few times and it is a fun game, but there's no incentive for them to evolve as a game franchise when they're making money hand over fist. Call of Duty is also one of their staple franchises, making it something you would expect to see at the first showing.

The choices 2 & 3 of all the issues seem to be the most obvious mistakes Microsoft has made and unless they do a 180 on this I will not buy one and other people who feel the same will not. If they lose the "core gaming" crowd it will definitely be a shit sandwich that Microsoft has to swallow, but until that happens I hope people stop posting these notes in separate threads.

So...

the point that has clearly gone over your head is that if people are economically gifted enough to buy a GAME SYSTEM that will cost 400-500 and generally is only for entertainment they can and probably do afford to upgrade from a tv type that has been obsolete since the early 2000's.

there are much simpler and more cost effective (not to mention legal and less time consuming) than to listen in on people talking what they're craving for munchies, I know there are some quite frankly outlandish ideas like this floating around, but if you think about it how much manpower would it take to listen to all these conversations when they could maybe go with something as simple as checking your internet browsing history and generate ads off those? Hell google does it already, so does bing. Try googling something repeatedly and all you are gonna get are ads that are relevant to yours searches.
