The trick is to already be prepared. You and your friends and your friends friends and all of their dogs are going to be performing the routine, "I go and raid the nearest store." Chances are that store and all the stores near it will either A) be completely cleared of supplies or B) infested with zombies (because wherever large crowds of people go, the infection has a higher chance of spreading).
The person with the most chance of surviving already has everything they need in the comforts of their own home, as well as the skills to use them. Do you have guns? Do you know how to use and maintain them? If not, do you have any other potential weapons? What about food? Most families in America (I don't know about anywhere else) have only enough food to last them about a week.
Another problem is that you can't just pull the old, "I'll run away, and live in the countryside for a while." Think about it, hard. First problem: you will most likely not be the only one thinking this. Many will try to get out of the city, and many will fail before they can do so, leaving their cars in the middle of the road. This leaves you with a high risk of getting stuck on the road and suffering the same fate.
Suppose you did make it out of the city. Then what? You live off the land? How? Answer this to yourself honestly: do you really know how to live outside of civilization? Foraging for food in the forest or plains or mountains or wherever you live isn't as easy as you might think. Berries don't grow on every other bush, and even if they did, not all of them are safe to eat. Farmers of old struggled from year to year, just growing their own food to feed themselves. And hunting? Forget about it. It's more than just point and shoot, assuming you can track something and not scare it off. You have to know how to gut the animal, and then how to cook it properly before you take even one bite.
The simple answer: if you want to have any chance of surviving the zombie apocalypse, develop these skills first, and have a realistic plan for food and shelter. Otherwise, you'll be joining the horde before you can say, "Ah! My brains!"

Good Lord, I have too much time.
