keep in mind guys, when valve first made HL they didnt really think so far into the future, remember it was only intended as a quake mod at first but evolved later.

So i dont think they had thought so far into the future about the plot and Gman, they most probably just modeled him after men in black descriptions in UFO conspiracies http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Men_in_black , and gave him the speech impediment so he would have something that's very characteristic and memorable for the players (he is not some generic guy in a suit).

The irony is, that even IF they decide to reveal who he is, it will probably be an idea from some of the fans, found in threads such as this ^^ (hopefully it wont be gordon is gman because thats just weak)

I support the Gordon Freeman is G-man theory. Green eyes, similar cheek bones, and Gordon starts with G. I hope at the end of the series that we get to hear Gordon Freeman speak, and it will be with the same speech impediment that the G-man has.
I love the idea of the speech impediment.

Isn't the G-man some mystical physic being who isn't actually there, G-ordan free-Man just gets his images forced into his head. Also isn't the speech impediment there because he's not human. I think he's a metaphor for the capitilistic and corporate universe we live in, he's a typical moneygrbbing, manipulating bastard.
My theory is that Gordon gets some sort of magical power that allows him to bend the very fabric of time and space, and that he is manipulating the course of events that the younger Gordon is going through.

He is glados's husband. That why he has the portals
Or. Or Or! He is Chell's son. Portal took place before Half Life, and the portal gun fused with Chell's DNA. It is a side effect that the Portal Gun has. Chell and her yet to be named husband then have their son Gman, who inherited the ability to make portals from his loving mother Chell. It all makes sense now!
That's actually a really interesting theory, and I would totally buy into it if it wouldn't make such a darn disappointing ending.

I don't think they should tell, and it's hard to see if they will or not. Valve is good at this sort of thing, but perhaps Gman is a story element which you have to piece together on your own, much like with GLaDOS. They give you hints as to who they are, but it is never fully explained.

I hope that G-Man is one of the Valve employees that is inside the game, controlling what's going on, in the same sense that we control Freeman. Total breaking the 4th wall, I might add
Or Valve is one of his employers.

G-Man should remain mysterious, but a few more tidbits of information would be great.

Anyway, give me your rebuttal and your alternate theories if you should feel so inclined.
My theory is this:

The G-man watches the Watchmen.

But in all seriousness, let me tell you a little story.

Once, there was this wonderful show called the X-files. In it, whenever there was a incident that the government wanted covered up, an odd old man in a suit, smoking a cigarett, would walk out of the room. It was cool, it was mysterious, and moreover, we and the main characters in the show had no idea who he was, only that he would show up whenever there was a cover up. He even had an awesome nickname; 'The Cancer Man'. Then at one point, it was explained who he was and all of his coolness washed away.

My point is this; I don't think we should ever find out who the G-man is, because when we do, the truth will not be as cool as the mystery. It never is.

But of course we'll be told who he is, and it will be a total let down for a lot of people, and they'll still try to work in their little theories about who he is and what he does, and we'll get about a dozen threads every other week with stuff like 'Who is the G-man, REALLY?', where we'll hear a bunch of BS and general reading between the lines.

So when that starts to happen rember that I called it. ;)

I'd love to finally know who/what G-Man really is, but I don't think it will be revealed anytime soon. At least not in episode 3. But there's always Half-Life 3 to look forward to...
I've read somewhere that HL3 will not be related to previous HL titles, it will have a different storyline (in a different universe perhaps).. I wouldn't be so sure about finding Gman there

Honestly I don't care who he is and I don't really want to know. It's his obscurity that makes him so interesting to follow through the story.

I hope that the mystery will never be solved, and that he will die before his secret is revealed.

G-Man is Freeman's father. Yeah.
Just kidding. I hope Valve won't ever give away his story. Being a Mystery man is what made him famous.

How about Breen being the advisor
that tried to mind-mug you and Alyx in Episode 1, killed Eli, and damn near brained you halfway through Episode 2
for a theory? You see Breen discussing with an advisor at the end of Half-Life 2 and agreeing to be put into another body, right? And then at the opening of Episode 1 Valve is still having Breen relevant by having him fly by on that monitor. And that advisor did seem to be a little bit vendetta-driven for a race that is obviously focused on the bigger picture...
That's quite a good theory, actually. And it wouldn't be a stretch to imagine bringing back an old bad guy.

they've always got Adrian Shepherd from Op4 to use for that, and they could still use G-man in it, as G-man was the only constant between Freeman and Shepherd.

Let's break down exactly what the G-Man does during the Half-Life saga.

HL1: It's unclear whether G either caused or tried to prevent the resonance cascade event at Black Mesa, but it's clear that he knew what would happen (his warning to Eli that fateful day being "Prepare for unforseen consequences"). From that moment on, he appears to "evaluate" a number of people, seemingly disappearing and reappearing at will, saving some of them from certain death and vanishing moments later. It's apparent that these individuals hold some sort of promise that G appreciates, and wishes to see them progress against the seemingly impossible odds that the Xen-Earth conflict represent.

Through a combination of luck, bravery and sheer badassery, a single theoretical physicist named Gordon Freeman not only fought his way through swarms of hostile aliens and half a regiment of U.S. Marines out to kill him, but he managed to make it to the borderworld Xen, and destroy the master of the Xenite invasion, the Nihilanth. While this ostensibly saved the world from a massive invasion from Xen, it set the stage for far worse- the Combine. G, knowing that the excrement was seriously about to strike the ventilation device, sent Gordon into a "slow teleport", trapping him outside linear time for nearly two decades to ensure he could be placed exactly where "the right man in the wrong place" could be most effective.

Between HL1 and HL2: G takes notice of Eli's young daughter, Alyx. Even as a child, her future potential is clear to G, and through as-yet unknown means he rescues her from Black Mesa's destruction and works to ensure her survival of the Portal Storms, the Seventeen-Hour War and the Combine's takeover of Earth.

HL2: G re-introduces Gordon to the world he worked so hard to save, now under Combine dominion. As Gordon does his "tell me where to go and stay out of my line of fire" thing, G stays one step ahead of him, monitoring his progress and ensuring that he has the resources he'll need to proceed. He can be seen talking to Odessa Cubbage at New Little Odessa, possible briefing Cubbage on Gordon's approach. With the destruction of Nova Prospekt, the Resistance rises up, and with their help Gordon and Alyx storm the Citadel and stop a massive Combine incursion, destroying the Citadel's portal generator and apparently killing Dr. Breen in the process. As the generator starts to explode, causing a fireball that nothing could possibly survive, G "pauses" time and plucks Gordon away, sending him back into the slow-warp nullspace, speaking of "numerous offers" for Gordon's "services". Though he appears to leave Alyx to die on top of the Citadel, he makes it clear in Ep2 that he in fact values her even more than Gordon, and it is not beyond the realm of possibility that he rescued Alyx the same way as Gordon.

(A side note here- one of the lines that the Vortigaunts gives is "We serve the same mystery". It's possible that G holds some sort of sway over the Vorts through the events of HL2. However, this changes just ahead.)

HL2 Ep1: G steps back into the slow-warp nullspace to speak to Gordon again. This time, however, he is blocked by a number of Vortigaunts; at first this amuses him, but once he realizes that they are somehow preventing him from reaching Gordon he becomes angry for the first time we have seen. As the Vorts surround Gordon and return him (and presumably Alyx) to the foot of the Citadel, G speaks his only line in Ep1: "We'll see about THAT." It seems that G had plans to place Gordon elsewhere, but the Vortigaunts sought to return him to Earth to continue the fight against the Combine there.

HL2 Ep2: G appears to Gordon at the moment the Vortigaunts are struggling to save a severely injured Alyx's life. He reveals that they have been blocking him from contacting Gordon, but he managed to take advantage of their moment of distraction. He mocks their supposed dedication to humanity's cause, and reveals his monitoring of Alyx since her childhood, as well as Breen's knowledge of this (his distorted picture appears behind G during the visual sequence at a Black Mesa desk). He admits to having his hands somewhat tied by another unknown entity (certain "restrictions", as he calls them) and is reduced to simply asking Gordon to protect Alyx as they make their way to White Forest.

Now. What does this say about the G-Man?

I believe that he is sort of a "headhunter", a scout for a grander trans-dimensional resistance against the Combine. Remember that the Synth creatures you face in the game- Striders, Gunships, Dropships, Hunters- were very likely encountered on other worlds in the past, and altered by the Combine the very same way Stalkers and Overwatch soldiers have been. It is likely that he visits many different worlds/dimensions and evaluates those who prevail against overwhelming odds, especially those species who have or likely will encounter and fight against the Combine. He then kidnaps those he deems suitable, and hires out their abilities to the highest bidder- which would probably be resistance fighters of other species also struggling against the Combine. It is possible that the act of both eliminating the Nihilanth and destroying a Citadel has made Gordon something of a hero in the eyes of these otherworldly fighters, and G's statement of "numerous offers" for Gordon could mean that G intended to simply ship Gordon off to some other world to continue the fight, before the Vortigaunts intervened.

However, the ultimate destruction of the Citadel and the creation of the superportal probably caught G-Man as much by surprise as anyone else, and it could be that he was left scrambling just like humankind was. He may have realized that the battle on Earth was going to be far more decisive than originally thought, and in fact may have wanted to see the superportal opened by the Combine, as a massive invasion would have weakened their force projection elsewhere. (The warning he commands Alyx to give her father- prepare for unforseen circumstances- could have been a last-ditch effort to have Eli abort the launch of the portal-closing rocket. Or it could have simply been a warning of the reaction the Advisors would have to their efforts.)
