FF1: like Dragon Warrior but group based. Ok
FF2: Great story. Fixed character classes.
FF3: Best of series. Excellent story, characters. Espers allowed for some flexible growth
FF5: Job System, story wasn't so great but the job system perfected the flexible growth system in future FF games
FF7: Good cutscenes, alright story. Rise of the whiney hero archetype found in anything Japan.
FF8-9: Didn't play, bar scene
FFX: Horrible voice acting forced me to quit just 10-15 hours in, hated all most all of the characters except the Hawaiian.
FF11: I actually liked this MMO even though it was extremely hardcore. No US servers really hurt the game as most of the Japanese players were rude and elitist.
FF12: I hate playing some whiney teenager, at the start of FF12 I was like alright now this is a main character I can get behind before hes assassinated and the game makes me control Vann.
FF13: Beautiful cutscenes, extremely linear. I didn't get turned off on the game until I got to Pulse and was actualy given some freedom, go figure.
FFT: One of the best stories in any FF game with the excellent Job System used in 5.

Theory is debunked in my case as my third FF was my favorite in addition to FFT.

not exactly, but it's a pretty good theory.

I played the first Final Fantasy, then Final Fantasy 6..

and Final Fantasy 4 is my favorite

The first final fantasy I played was IX and yes it is my favorite for the same reason that its the creator's favorite.

It pretty much encompasses everything final fantasy is supposed to be. A grand adventure in a fantasy environment. It had great medieval environments, a already worldly main character, personal growth from the entire party, a villain that actually did stuff throughout the entire game with you learning of his own tragic back story in the progress.

I could go on and on but yet it recieves so much hate simply because of the way it looks and because its not like VII

I played the first 7. 1 was the first I played but 7 was the first I beat.

My preference, in order:

6,5,7,4,3,1,2

6 and 5 are very close for me, but 6 wins out because it's only real flaw is that game loses a lot of focus once you reach the world of ruin.

If Tactics counts, it's the best one.

I played FFX first and I thought it was ok, now I'm very sure it's awful and I don't like the whole series but I dislike the other ones a lot less than FFX. But what a silly subject, why don't we all just laugh about it!?

HA. HA. HA. HA.

I think FFIV is my favorite. I was really excited a while back when they released a sequel to it on the Wii too, but it wasn't the first one I played.

I have to disagree too. I started with FF1 back when I was a little one and while I would say that it did a lot of start my love of RPGs(one of my earliest memories was crossing the freshly made bridge the first time and having the scrolling story come up) it isn't too high up on my list. Probably 4-7 as well as the original gameboy final fantasy would be my top 5, though I think it depends on my mood as to what order they would be in.

Each of them had a very different play style and their own memories. I beat 4 probably 20 times and can damn near quote the whole thing, 6 and 7 both seemed so ahead of their time when they came out and 5, oh Galuf you silly bastard, how could I not put you on the list?

I think its more likely to be the time in your life that you encounter a game that puts it into the nostalgia 'That is the best one ever!' category. Being old enough to dig into some of the intricacies of a plot and having other gamers around you to share your experiences does a lot(I know when I started gaming when I was really young, but a lot of my friends didn't join in until around middle school. Having memories of playing FFVI with a friend colored the way I look at the game, and I know that when FFVII came out everyone was coming to school every day and talking about just how far they had gotten and what happened the night before).

On the other end of that there seems to be a point where most people become a bit of a gaming curmudgeon(or grognard, what-have-you). When you hit a point where you don't have time to game as much due to the obligations that come with getting older, its easy to set a much higher standard in what you sink your precious time into while at the same time looking back at the games that you could drop countless hours on and seeing them as without flaw. I put in maybe an hour or two a night on gaming now so something really has to draw me in to get me to put in 50 hours on it, thats a lot of my gaming month right now! So its an easy logical step to think back to FFVI and the fact I've beaten it probably 5 or 6 times, putting that much effort into it each time and think it must be a masterpiece(ok it was), forgetting that instead of being the bulk of my gaming month, I'd power through most of the game in a weekend binge.

Not true for me. My first was VII but my favourite is IX. I don't think I'm the only person who feels IX is totally underrated.
You are not alone. IX is a very underrated game and i recommend it to everyone who hasn't played it. Also, VII was the first i played and seemed really overrated.

Hmm, FF1...

nope, it's kind unplayable
Never even try 2, then.

It had one of the most irritating level systems ever and that's only one of the reasons it pretty much defines Nintendo hard. One review described it as "The game that not only tries to beat down the characters, but also the player"

Well, I can't say for sure if your first is your favorite or not, the first I played through was X, real first was probably 2 (actually 4) via roms. Didn't understood anything and wondered why that smoke dragon was so tough. My actual favorite might be between X and 6.

One Final Fantasy that seems to depend on which one you played first though, is 7 vs X. All those I know who prefer 7 over X played 7 first and vice-versa.

Hrmm, I've played 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10-2, 12, 13, Tactics Advance, Tactics A2, Mystic Quest and Crystal Chronicles...first one was 4 I think, and it's ONE of my favorites, but my absolute favorites are:
3D: VIII
2D: VI
Spin-Off: Tactics Advance
For me, your theory is wrong, you Spoony Bard

I played FFX first, couldn't get into FFVIII or FFIX when I tried them due to poor graphics and irritating gameplay, FFX-2 interested me for awhile but quickly got old, and I don't think I ever got around to FFXII despite having my friend's copy sitting on my shelf for the better part of a year. Didn't bother buying FFXIII.

So yeah, FFX is kind of my favourite by default.

the first FF i played was part 7, and no, it has not become my favourite... actually, i didn't like it enough to play through (yeah, i know, that's blasphemy to them fanboys, but, like i care ^^)

but i fairly enjoyed the remakes of the older FFs. if they count. didn't want to torture my eyes with NES graphics (snes ok, but not nes; that's too much ^^)

I've played every numerical FF game up to 12 (even had an XI account for 6 months), starting with VII. It was my favorite for years until I discovered V. I'm a whore for customization, and the job system was simply awesome.

This holds true for most of the people i know who have "dabbled" in FF games. The more hardcore of us tend to judge each game on its own merits, or just bash FF7 for being popular...

The first Final Fantasy game I played was Final Fantasy XII. Didn't like it.

Final Fantasy X, though...second one, loved it.

Er....does Kingdom Hearts count?
