How many times have you gotten this response? It's used to make you feel like a selfish rich brat. It's used to make you eat until you vomit. It's used by patriots who aren't willing to admit that their favorite country needs improvement. It's used to deprive you of your right to your own emotions. And it's the biggest bullshit cop out argument since "Life isn't always fair."

Alright, here's the deal. I'm fully aware that there's a starving child in Africa right now. We all know that. But I don't see him here right now, do you? No? Then quit bringing him up. Just because somebody has it worse, doesn't mean I don't have a right to complain. All it means is that we BOTH have a right to complain, but he just has a much bigger right to complain. That's how I see it. (Examples in the spoiler)

-Yes, there's starving kids in Africa. But that doesn't change the fact that I'm still full and I'm going to puke if you make me cram any more potatoes down my pie-hole. And somehow, I doubt my puke is going to help the Africans out any.

-Yes, there's kids in Africa who've never even seen a computer. But that doesn't change the fact that we still use dial-up.

-Yes, there's kids in Africa who've never played a video game. But that doesn't change the fact that Rumble Roses sucks.

-Yes, there's places in Africa without any kind of education. But that doesn't change the fact that some schools see fit to punish the wrong kids. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.270535-Ridiculous-Victim-finally-stands-up-to-a-bully-and-ends-up-being-handed-a-suspension-VIDEOINCLUDED]

-Yes, there's kids in Africa who will probably die today. But that doesn't change the fact that you just severed my finger.

-Yes, there's places in Africa that don't have hospitals. But those are useless to us if we don't have insurance.

-Yes, there's places in Africa without any kind of law enforcement, but I'm being charged with a sex offense just because I took a piss in public in my yard.

What do you think? Are we all just a bunch of rich jerks unaware of how well we have it? Or am I actually onto something here? Also, post examples of this argument being used on you. (And no, most of the above examples have never happened to me.)

For me it's usually been, "there's people in China who would love to have xyz to eat".

Fine, let's mail them my xyz.

What about the starving kids in the other parts of the world? They never get used as arguments? How do you think they feel?
Honestly, you can't compare suffering like that. I had a bad day. So what if some kid in Africa (or other part of the world) is starving? You know what else? Some people don't even get a chance to be born!
But that's another discussion that I'd rather not have.

Also, if I don't want to eat something, then why don't you give it to those Africans? Why are you giving it to me?

I've solved this problem by sending 28 dollars every month to a starving kid in Cambodia. It's with that 'child fund' thing that runs ads on the Military channel. So I have effectively bought my way to a clean conscious every time someone brings up the less fortunate :D moreover I can pull this on anyone who claims to be a better person than me.

I don't think it matters that I don't read his letters that he sends me, and that I've filed 'child funds' mail as spam... and that I don't know the kid's name.

What if his letters are him asking you to stop sending money because the local guerrillas keep extorting it from him to buy weapons?

Well then that's... inconvenient! That would be pretty dang ironic, though.

"I'm sorry, but I don't care... I've got my own problems to worry about. I'll tell ya what, though... Why not you fly on over and use your kindness to feed them? As for the rest of the continent, Africa's like Mexico, but way more diseases and corrupt warlords live in Africa...
Along with Lions, tigers, and other dangerous animals... Tell Ikemefuna in the Whachutu tribe to go and hunt one of thos things... If he comes back, he's not only helped out, but has WAY better chances with women... AND THAT'S HOW THINGS WORK IN AFRICA!!!"

As the great Tom Hanks once said, "That's all I have to say about that."

I can pretty much guarantee that cant happen. Remember I said its all through the 'child fund' thing? they basically just keep the money and just take care of the kid. To the best of my understanding I'm basically funding a big orphanage or something.

More than once, when I've went to throw away some food, I hear:

"You know, there are kids in Africa who never get anything to eat."

Oh, really? Okay, I'll put this half-eaten sandwich in an envelope and mail it to 'Random starving African' shall I?

Apparently used alot to get marginalised groups to shut up, but it works fine against everyone else.

The only thing I ever remember was one day I was eating at my friend Jake's house. We were eating... something. I think it was Lamb and onions or something like that. anyway, his little brother didnt like something about how the lamb was made (really no one did, but we didnt complain, mainly cause his mom doestn take shit like that and I was the guest. so his mom said if you odnt like it, the starving children in africa would gladly like it.

So my friend's brother got up, came back with a box that was fully stamped and mailable (he appearantly heard this alot too), and wrapped up the entire plate before walking out and dropping it off in the mailbox (we have one of thses "experimental" boxes where you just drop of big bulky gifts and not have ot worry about going to the post office).

It was pretty funny all and all.

You can survive without that. You can just light a stove or something, maybe give them a candle.

My mother told me that once.

I gave her a stamp and a box.

I was beaten.

From then on it was "Eat your damn food or you can starve". That worked better than the guilt trip.

I can't eat anything cuz I have glandular fever. So in stead of thinking about those nameless starving children, think of me!

I was born and raised in Africa so I know how things are, but hey my family gives money to charity every Friday without fail that goes towards not just Africa but the East and Middle East as well. Oh and by the way people, there are such thing as computers, television, cell phones, and cars in Africa (yes, even in some parts of the poorest countries).

Theres starving people in africa because western developments in industrialized food production led to exports of food that far outstripped local production, allowing for unsustainable population growth in those areas. Combine food aid as the primary nutrition source and social and government strife and you have yourself a problem.

So, you not wanting to overeat has nothing to do with starving people in africa. It has to do with unanticipated consequences of sending food to help starving people not be starving. People in the state of "not-starving" make more babies. Which need more help.

People who use this excuse are so annoying,

"people in africa are starving" Yeah that's because the don't live in the industrial world, where everyone else is. Sure I know it's a problem, but not taking my share just goes to another mid-high income person
