For me it's usually been, "there's people in China who would love to have xyz to eat".

Fine, let's mail them my xyz.
That's how I've always looked at it, though thankfully I've never been on the receiving end of such an argument.

Since I can't eat the rest, give me a random address and I'll happily send them my left-overs.

When I get that from people I tell them that there is a hell of a lot more starving people than just africans, they are just not as noticed.

It is a stupid argument. There's got to be something they can do to not starve. If there is literally NO way for "Africans" not to starve, then the continent is over-populated, and there shouldn't be that many people on it. Africa will never become a developed country if they get all their needs covered by the West.

Edit: In fact, telling your child to give someone something for nothing is probably a good way for them to develop into one of those people who demand more alimoney because "they're too fat to work".

I feel worse when i see the poor animals suffering.
Probably because they can't do shit about their situations and i like cats too much.
Or we could all do a South Park and get our own Starvin' Marvins who will get our horrible fat friend sent to Africa...

I rely on the fact that there are more obese people in Africa then starving. As well as Canada is in a statistical tie for giving the most food aid per capital then any other country on earth with the US so my taxes are doing my part and if that is not good enough for anyone I could care less what they think. Canada gives about one quarter the the aid provided by entire European union and roughly 12% of the US.
I used to here that all the time but there is no one to guilt trip me now.

To which I would promply respond, "So?" or "I don't give a rat's ass, but then again they probably already have those.".

The arguement kind of falls flat when you try to use it against a sociopathic wannabe.

Honestly, I find it hard to care for people in other countries but I donate blood, my bone marrow, platelets and I sometimes help out with soup kitchens. I don't know why because I will never meet the people getting most of this stuff but I just think someone I could potentially be in those shoes one day and then it feels good

Are we all just a bunch of rich jerks unaware of how well we have it?
"We" implicitly includes me. I'm not. This excuse is used to put down people who complain about comparatively petty things. It's to remind you how good you have it.

When it comes to parents making you clean your plate, it's to make you feel grateful. Obviously. Stop picking it apart to try and rationalise the guilt away. It's a classic trick of spin-doctors to try and bring an argument down by taking it entirely literally.

I stopped caring. Sorry they have starved for years, everyone donates millions, nothing changes.
I accept that it will never change, so I just stopped caring. No guilt, nothing.
Well you know things have changed."it will never change" is kinda a retarded comment.I don't see whats wrong with giving a little love.Because what they gain from it is much more than we would lose. And if you think I'm full of shit i am going to Ethiopia next year to help out. What we really need to do is get rid of all them fucking missionary's that spent ridicules amounts of money to get bibles and spread "the word of the lord"and this is all donated to the church.

I solved this annoying statement a long time ago, just follow it out logically!

Ok, so someone in africa is starving, therefore since they have it worse I shouldn't feel bad.
But someone has it worse from them, say, a starving african kid with no legs.
Then someone has it worse than them, and so forth and so forth until you find one person who has THE worst life on the planet, and they can't point to anyone else to make themselves feel better. By the 'logic' of the statement/idea(someone else has it worse so you should feel ok now), only that person has a right to feel bad, and everyone else should feel good since their life is better.

As such, everyone should be happy! except of course that one person, their life is the absolute worst. It works logically, but we humans don't exactly listen to that side much when we feel terrible.

If "Do They Know It's Christmas"" couldn't save them, wtf can I do? But, seriously, I'd donate for birth control programs since I'm a realist.

It's been used against me, but I already have a developed sense of ethics, and I know I do as much as I can to relieve the suffering of those who are deprived basic human rights on an almost daily basis. If anyone is in the wrong in that scenario (the eating one), it's the person who made too much food. Though when children refuse to eat at all, I understand parents weariness.

It's a useless sentiment, to be honest, employed by the self-righteous to make themselves feel better than whomever they're trying to belittle. It's hypocritical, too - do you REALLY think that everyone who's ever said this actually gives a damn about starving Ethiopians? No. They care about making themselves look better than you, which - of course - has the opposite effect.

Yes, people die all over the world. Yes, it's bad. But there's fuck all I can do about it and there's fuck all they will, so let's try to be mature and focus on what's actually going on.

I'd love to help people overseas in a tangible, practical way[footnote]I mean actually flying over there and distributing aid/supplies, rather than shipping off a few quid via a charity service. Not that they're somehow worse, just it doesn't feel as useful[/footnote] but that's not exactly convenient or, um, possible at this point in my life, so I'm afraid it'll have to wait until I have money to spare for plane tickets and things to give out to those who need it more.

I thought this was going to be about how everyone's talking about Japan...
'Yes, I know thousands and thousands of people are dying in Japan! But those people in Africa need food damnit!'
