Do any of you post on other forums that require you to type ad slogans every so often in order to post?
4chan. There is reCaptcha on every post.

Besides, here I've seen a total of 4 or 5 ads for the past two weeks or so. Not much more than two dozen in total. Three of them were in what you could call "rapid succession" almost one per day for 3 days, or maybe they were 3 in four days, this week.

Do you feel less bad now?
No, I was just curious. Just one other site that does this. I wonder how all those other free forums pay the bills without making posters type ad slogans.
if escapist was just a "free forum" then it might be excessive. but since the escapoiest is a online magazine with articles and all that fun stuff, they have to pay people for that content. that can get expensive since they do it each day of each week.

I agree, it's getting way over the top. I've also yet to see another site that's taken it as far as this one has.
I get people need to make money. But when you have banner ads that have actually replaced the background of the website,, smaller ads on the pages of the site, an ad before every video, and ads as your captchas, there's a problem.

I get why they're doing it, but yeah.

I'm getting sick of seeing damn Marine commercials and the totting propaganda about them being humanitarian force, or how fucking Kratos was a man before he was a god... no shit. Or how being in the air force or navy is like living in the future with super high tech gizmos and crap.
Ok, let me clarify. Needing money doesn't justify ad overkill.
If it bothers you so much, I'm sure you could PM Susan Arendt about the problem, I'm sure she would be happy to refund your subscription money

I don't see the aversion to the pub club. I mean, it's only as much as any monthly magazine and, let's be honest, it has a helluvuh lot more content than any monthly magazine ever will.

If you're getting all that for free, when you have the option to pay for it, then some ads should be expected.

Typing in product names, full screen borders around videos with a banner on top of that. Back off.
Unfortunately for you, your talking to the wrong group of people. These people would take a bullet for their favorite companies, and will go to ridiculous lengths to defend them, so threads like this never go over well here. If your dumbfounded by their reactions, know that I was shocked at first too, but these people are hardcore about their capitalism.

things the escapists love:
1. atheism/anti-theism
2. bashing Americans
3. capitalism

Oh, I almost forgot

4. grammar

Yes I get that, but as I've said before, when the ads start to detract from your site's main content then you really need to re-evaluate just WTF it is that you are doing.

But a GOOD company doesn't care about the money. I don't mind maybe a few banner ads. After all, without banner ads, I would have never discovered Rifftrax, but there is such a thing as going too far.
Huh? Do you expect this site to be run by good will alone?

Running The Escapist costs far more than you think. Less ads means no Yahtzee or Movie Bob.
Very true. In fact, didn't we just recently have a bit of a debacle over escapist contributors almost not getting paid?

It's not the difference between making money and making a lot of money. It's the difference between making money at ALL, and literally having to shut things down.
No, actually it is the difference between making money and making lots of money. Banner ads is money but banner ads, video ads, captcha ads, etc... is making lots of money.

Whatever, you guys defend it all you want. It's overkill and has no doubt made a few people "escape".
If I recall, the escapist was just recently having trouble paying some of its contributors for agreed upon contracts. This is not reflective of "a lot" of money.

I may not have any statistics or figures, but that's some concrete evidence you can look up in the forum archives yourself.
Hmm...let's see here. If I say I can't pay my mortgage this month, will you give me some money? Just come to my site and click on banner ads for an hour. Thanks.

wow long quote there. anyways....

look up exactly what and where, I googled different portions of that line and all of it together and only found "nothing" that seems to have anything to do with what you are talking about.

this new trend of "I cant be bothered to explain my self to you even tho I am trying to convince you of my views" is INSANE. what is with you people????? ( fyi not here on escapist but everywhere I read online now.)

NeoGaf has 2 banner ads, one at the top and one at the bottom. Wonder how they keep the forums up!

My point is, THIS is overkill and I don't believe that "they need to make money" is an excuse for an "anything goes" type of approach.
Dunno about NeoGaf. Do they host multiple shows on there? What are their expenses? Do they have an expo lined up for this year? Google only led me to some forum, I'm not sure if that's what you're referring to. Because the Escapist is more than a forum. There are several guys who work for this website.
All that extra stuff is no doubt expensive, but I don't watch the videos much, live nowhere near North Carolina so don't know if I want to type ad slogans to get them the money for that stuff. I only watch Jimquisition these days and not even every week.
Did you really say "Oh, I don't want to give them money because I don't use that much"? I think the Jimquisition is on YouTube - so apparently you don't need to give anybody money.

I understand they need money and I'm fine with ads in general but the typing in of marketing phrases is just too far. Zero punctuation isn't that good...
I agree with this. Every time I have to type in one of those fucking marketing phrases I feel like I am selling a part of my soul.
Marketing phrases? Is that the "Describe this product"? Because "greasy slippers" seems to work fine for whatever they have there. Same goes for slamming my hand on the keyboard. Apparently "ahafdha" is a perfectly valid description judging from the last half a dozen CAPTCHAs with "Describe this" I've encountered.

When ads don't play before videos I feel terrible.
I feel like a dirty freeloading cheapskate who lives in a dirty, dank cave.
Which is mostly a bad feeling.

[small]Can't get enough of those those dank, dirty caves.[/small]

Yup, they're so awful. I can't stand them. Get them away.

-Me if I hadn't payed to get rid of the adverts.
It's the internet. It's a sea of free content. Why pay for it? I know they get contributors to make videos, but for me it's primarily just a forum. I watch Jim Sterling mostly and I could follow him on Destructoid as well. Anyway- no other forum has such annoying advertisements. I am not paying to post on a forum, I will just keep rolling my eyes every time I have to type "the all new chevy sonic."

No, the marketing phrases I'm talking about is were it will tell you to write "Buy a Toyota" or something like that.

Hmm, I haven't gotten those.

Incidentally, the CAPTCHA now wants me to describe hotels I've never heard of. Let's try "a portal to the literal hell"

EDIT: Yeah, that worked.

Strangely, I have only gotten the captcha where you can describe something once, but I get the marketing phrase thing all the time. Are you a pub club member, maybe?

No, I'm not. Pub Club members don't get CAPTCHAs or ads. Maybe they are keyed to location, I don't know. I mostly get the plain text ones. The ads are few and far between.

If you give them...What 25 bucks for a year you get to ignore the adds.
It's called the Pub Club.

So, either start giving them money, or stop bitching when they need to make money.
I'm in the pubclub and now I've got giant sidebars advertising "space janitors" that I didn't want or pay for.
