am i the only one who doesn't give a damn? they did give us specs, a release date, the controller and a nice list of games, and people complain that they didnt get to see the case? thats all theyre complaining about when you get right down to it.

has anyone ever complained about box art not being shown at the announcement of a game? even that i could understand since box art is marketing material. but this is a bit silly if you ask me.

Well this does have a little bit of importance. It's great seeing what the console does, but if it's packaged in a gigantic shell with odd dimensions, or displays annoying lights while on it could be an issue. Some people do also take aesthetics into account (and hey, who am I to judge?) with their game systems and if it's a blocky or otherwise garish design it could turn some people away.

Box art is replaceable, you can show game footage to display the "product." Not showing the console isn't as dire as people are making it out to be, but it still is a big deal. An important question to ask is: Why didn't they show the console?

I can see why it's slightly frustrating, but it could be a clever idea. They get the first word in, get people talking about their console first and we have something substantial to talk about (specs and controller) and then when it gets closer to the date and they want to reramp the hype up again they can reveal the price and console and get another round of press

I can only assume they haven't shown it because unlike the controller, they havne't finalized their design. Maybe they are doing their best to optimize the cooling to space ratio so it doesn't oh... I dunno... over heat and kill the system like 360 did.

It's puzzling. It almost suggests that there's some big reveal in what the console looks like. We practically know everything else. Specs controller, a few games, everything, everything except what the damn thing looks like. They definately know what it looks like, so why didn't they show it?

My guess is that they don't have a finished model yet, and all they had was a prototype model with all the wires and shit hanging out.

have any of the previous announced consoles been shown during their first announcement? I don't believe any of us had seen what a Wii U looked like untill nearly a year and a half later.

What do they really expect it to look like? The PS3 was a giant black monolith. Who cares what the damn box looks like?

Big, Black, PS4 somewhere engraved on it, PS-logo.
What more do you need to know?
I could care less how the actual console will look like as the only times i ever lay eyes upon it when i insert and eject game discs.

I'm guessing they haven't finished the design yet, considering that it won't be released before the holidays. Showing it off now would lock them to the design they've got at the moment. Not doing so leaves freedom to change it however they want.

It was a conference designed solely to show the new console. You would expect at some point that they would therefore actually show the new console.
Personally just hoping for it to be relatively compact and understated, really don't need anymore giant cinder blocks of machines tbh.

OT: Nah I didn't care, games are what matters right?

I don't care what it looks like tbh... But then again I don't care about what the graphics look like and it feels to me half the presentation was taken up with that -.-

That clear glass concept unit was awesome, that would be a brilliant design and would have an effect on my purchase decision.

I'm sure Sony is leaving its shirt on untill E3.

This whole announcement... thing was just to make clear that, yes there is a PS4. But seeing as that is a pretty big deal they felt the need for some sort of event, I guess.

I'd rather have an event that shows the games and not the console, than an event that shows the console but not the games, like Nintendo had when it first revealed the Wii at E3.

Didn't show it because there is nothing to show.

An AMD bulldozer or piledriver is going to be around 125 watts TDP, due to cost I don't expect a vishera in the box. Ultimately there is a thermal concern to manage. The other components are also going to be heat generators as well although scaleable. Going to be looking for some fans, fairly heavy heatsinks... hard to say if it will be custom or off the shelf components, probably looking for something in the way an external power supply with a rather large cord to separate the devices, it may have some sort of fan as well.

499.00 USD has been the buzz, but I think that is somewhat light. The OS will be kind of windows 8 kernel, which makes the wonder how Sony has worked around the patents of the Kinect device... maybe cut a deal for Xbox to run with a Blu-Ray device at close to cost in exchange for Kinect and the OS. Unified API's... ermm...

As far as the overall shape of the unit? the ductwork will dictate most of that, CAD and tunnel testing the airflow trying to mitigate the noise that the fan/fans are going to put out... probably going to have some throttling built in to control that as well.

Something like this depending if the thing has the PSU internal or external?

It does matter, but as has been stated many a time, they're probably saving it so they have something to show at E3. The look of the product defines, more than anything else, the character of it and the sense that you're going to get by purchasing it. It may sound inconsequential, but I like the sleek black of the PS3 and it says something about the console's purpose.

it's just a black box with usb ports in it and slot for BD, people that really need to see it, wait till E3.

as for me i don't really care how it looks all my consoles are hidden away under TV so i only see them when i need to change a game.
