In conjunction with the shame thread, I thought I'd make a thread that highlights the more positive aspects of your country. What makes you proud of your country? Don't forget to mention the name of your country as well (mine is Belgium).

Well, we did invent the chips (or also called French fries) and we have the best frigging chocolate in the world.

Oh, and we're also proud of Kim Clijsters. At least some Belgian pride that puts our tiny country on the map.

I... ummm....
I can't actually think of anything.
I love the country. not the people.
well. I hate most of the people. not all of them.
well. maybe not most. just some. probably a few million.
good thing I'm not a permanent resident of this place. otherwise there would probably be a few million less people living here. :p
I love Germany... why can't I go back? :(

A tiny little island with only a few natural resources that dominated the world for centuries, had an empire that the sun never set on.

We invented TV, the internet, the jet engine and radar.

We birthed Shakespeare, Newton, Orwell and Churchill; and sheltered Marx, Freud and Marley (Bob).

We gave the world pop music (The Beatles) and good rock music (The Rolling Stones), we explored the artistic highs of rock (Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd) and smashed it all down (Sex Pistols and the Clash).

We curbed the power of kings (Magna Carta) and resisted the forces of tyranny whilst our allies failed or hid.

And I'll damned if we're ever openly proud of any of it!

Go Britain!

And a wave of grey descended upon the land, and if you listen close enough all you can hear is groaning and crying.

I kid, of course.
As much as I hate my town, England's ok. It's hard to explain but there's a charming sort of informal friendliness with people here.

Norway developed a nice cheesecutter, and made a small copperwire hold papers toghether. :p
Also, we are considered to have a good public healthcare, and good public schools.
Also we didn't turn into one of the USAs bootlickers when it was discovered oil in our seas.

:-(

He's not that bad. Especially in comparison to say Bush or Berlusconi. Plus he's going to be replaced with a blubbering, jowl flapping tory-boy in a few months. I think we'll all start to miss old one eye after that!

America.
Honestly this is tough. I'd actually thought of joining military service, but not for my country. I need the money, and I care about my friends. If there was ever a threat to my home town, I would fight for it.
But that's it.
Everything here sucks.
Except McDonalds.
And the women.

I visited Britain a few times and I also love the country side. It has something relaxing about it.

don't open this unless you haven't read any of my rants on the australian army.

Probably my most patriotic moment was when I went to France. It's not because my country is better, France is awesome but for several other reasons. Maybe I soaked up some of the feeling on Bastille day, maybe it's because we have better weather, but I think it's because of a small town in the French countryside near the somme. It's called Villers-Brettoneaux and is probably spelt wrong. It's a town that Australian soldiers liberated twice from the germans in World War one.
Everywhere in the town there are australian and french flags flying. The school has a museum of australia in the great war and looks like it's been shipped brick by brick from Victoria. In the playground there is a big sign saying 'NEVER FORGET AUSTRALIA' (in french obviously). That place was touching. It reminded me that our country has made a major difference in both world wars.
Then there's all the other wars we've kicked arse in, but I haven't been to Kakoda or Long Tan.

We also invented half the world's sports (on the international level, anyway). The fact that we constantly lose at them is just our British sense of fair play: after all, we ruled half the world, it's only fair that we let the colonies win at cricket and rugby every now and then.

Berlusconi has style. Everyone knows he is dirty and corrupt so he doesn't try to hide it. His awesome...but the Italians can keep him.

Let's see. I just love the food here in Germany, both the common stuff and the extremely varied local cuisine of the individual states.
Also, we have arguably the best beer in the whole damn world! ... Well, maybe not exactly, but it's a close second to the beer from the Czech Republic. ^^
The Healthcare system is something I'm proud of, too, I guess, even though it seems it's currently run by the ministry of douchebagness.
And, of course, I am EXTREMELY proud of our fraternities, who actively pursued and fought (and died) for a united Germany and democratic rule.
