Red Barrels (or game equivilant).
Guns. Shooting. Melee.

Op how old are you? Because everything you list has been around YEARS longer than Halo 3. The flamethrower has been in dozens of games, sticky (plasma) grenades at least 10 years since Halo 1 and grenade and rocket launchers are a shooter staple dating back since (I'm guessing) before you were born.

Also the boomshot in Gears of War is a grenade, not rocket launcher (notice the trajectory of the round, dipping? That's characteristic of a grenade not rocket) so yeah... seen before Gears 3.

I kid, I kid.

Guns? I love Left 4 Dead because it is exclusively a zombie shooter. I don't usually play shooters anymore though, mostly because I clocked in around 7 days, 8 hours, and around 19 minutes onto the COD4 clock before I grew out of it.

lack of a deep story.
... ugh...

OP... have you played many games at all? Because it seems you only know 3 franchises, and even those you don't seem to know very well... Gears of War has had grenade launchers since the beginning and Modern Warfare 2 wasn't even close to the first to have them.

But I guess... I don't know, everything I can think of that's in a lot of shooters I can think of one game that doesn't have them.

a game cover featuring shit that looks fun but ends up being bland and annoying (interchangeable with a cover of a lone figure attempting to look badass/mournful)

Space marines fighting aliens, usually ugly ones. Doom Guy was the first space marine to make murder of ugly monsters (though he was fighting demons and not aliens), and the FPS genre has not grown out of it. Everywhere we see real Doom's children (Master Chief even has the same armor of his daddy, down to the color of everything but the helmet (Doom Guy had a white helmet, Cheif's is green)) trying to be unique and still being the same (the Gear's chainsaw gun is the bastard offspring of Doom Guy's chainsaw and an assault rifle it had a 1-night stand with).
One thing missing from modern FPS games is fun. Monster spams like Doom were mindless fun anyone could have. Not many can have pure fun with modern shooters (CoD is ambush-happy fun when the cheap crap is ignored, which means almost all of the game is ignored), but everyone could enjoy murdering the pixel-demons of Doom.

Bashable crates with loot inside, red barrels that go boom...although I haven't seen the first one in a while...(I think half life wore it out.)

Guns, think if we can move past this, what then becomes possible?

Gun fetishism seems at an all time high to me. Probably analagous to Yug'claude the Gaulish berserker jacking off over his new throwing axe and the sound it makes thudding into flesh.

So many Yug'claudes' out there...

So your complaining that they use flamethrowers, sticky grenades, and grenade launchers?
These are all valid weapons to have in those games.

They shoot things.

The guns are bland.

And the story is forgettable.

Yup, this summarizes all of my issues with it...

Characters that are naturals in the use of sniper rifles, can drive tanks/aircraft of any design, and have an intimate knowledge of every gun in existence, no matter what the country/planet/dimension of origin.

Terribly bland main character, little to no feasible plot, an online community filled with either children, adolescent pricks, or downright trolls, piss-poor weapon handling, and a run-and-gun feel that's really getting on my nerves.

Last good FPS I played was S.T.A.L.K.E.R Shadow of Chernobyl (and the others in the series).

Why? Because it kicked my ass without being on the highest difficulty setting.
Couldn't agree more. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is the only new series to emerge in the last few years that has stood out to me.

The FPS genre is especially prone to stagnation, always has been, this streak of ultra popular modern military faux-realistic shooters, led by the likes of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and its competitors, hasn't been helping at all.
