mediocrity, I haven't played a good shooter since timesplitters 3
Haven't played an excellent shooter since Perfect Dark. Thank the gods for its XBLA port.

Play F.E.A.R.

Any recurring themes that you note in that game are pretty much common fare abroad.

Enemies that are presented with cookie-cutter difficulty curves, office/sewer/warehouse environs, repetative scenarios, bland weaponry, time control...

Maybe I should buy a cane and yell at children, I don't know...

American leads. Come on people, they're not the only good guys in the world. When playing a WWII shooter, what's wrong with the British, French, or any of the neutral nations in the world who got invaded anyway? What about the Chinese?

I'm sorry, but it's a bit hard for me to feel sorry for an American marine in WWII when the Chinese were actually invaded by the Japanese 3 years before the war even started. They were fighting a war against the invading Japanese and their own people at the same time. If game companies hate communists so much, why not let the player play as one of the Guomingdang (Chinese Democratic Party)?

They fought the communists and the Japanese at the same time, and you could have a really powerful finale when you fight off the Japanese only to watch as your country falls to the Red Tide of Communism and you get exiled to Taiwan. Just someone besides the Americans, please. They were not the only defining factor in WWII. In fact, I'd say the USSR had a lot more to do with the Ally's eventual victory than the U.S.

It's not just WWII games, either, Resistance 2, Killzone 2 and Modern Warfare 1 & 2(so I gather) had the brave, handsome Americans as the protagonists.

I have nothing against the United States. But there is such a thing as over saturation.

One giant testicle.
This thought stands out to me, and leads to the question:
Why the hell not?
It would be the perfect shooter character!

I believe this generally has to do with the majority of the publishers being big, sweaty, American men that want their video games to sell well in the red, white, blue land of Freedom and apple pie.

I believe Japan does the same to some extent. Culture wise, I mean. I'm not entirely sure that the majority of Japan's populace has large breasts, is capable of lifting large swords, and/or has fabulous hair.

... ugh...

OP... have you played many games at all? Because it seems you only know 3 franchises, and even those you don't seem to know very well... Gears of War has had grenade launchers since the beginning and Modern Warfare 2 wasn't even close to the first to have them.

But I guess... I don't know, everything I can think of that's in a lot of shooters I can think of one game that doesn't have them.
Sorry but your wrong. Gears of war didn't have grenade launchers since the beginning. In fact there isn't a Grenade launcher in 1 or 2, unless you count the mortar from 2 which you shouldn't.

I believe he is talking about the weapon that the Boomer's would use.

Sorry, wrong topic.

How do you delete a post?
You can't. Don't worry, just write why it happened.

Gotta stop you there. There are lots of shooters with no blood in them. Look at the Battlefield games as an example.

3rd person GOW style. Im tired of it. If you must, atleast be like Army of Two: 40th Day and make it better. Just having the ability to switch shoulders with a button press is a huge step foward. (RDR half assed it, but better than nothing)

Sup I said:
Tell me if I'm wrong, some of these things were probably started way before these, but here are some trends I'm starting to see in every single shooter of late.

1. Flmae throwers. Halo 3> Geras of War 2> CoD WaW> Brink?

Feel free to add, I know some more I have just forgotten.
Flamethrowers come and go in spurts, it seems.

There were popular for a bit early in double-aughts (2000s), as in Return to Castle Wolfenstein, CoD:UO, BFV: WWII mod, and even Halo 1 PC.

My contribution: leveled perk system and unlockable weapons. I prefer the old days, like in UT2K4 everyone would just pick up weapons, and then scramble for the Redeemer or Tag Rifle.

Regenerating health
Lack of a good story
Lack of basic strategy (point, shoot, repeat)
Mandatory, repetative, mediocre online.

Ya....

Your point is very valid, but I gotta stop you at Modern Warfare. Both games depicted the American forces thinking they were the most important people getting shit done. However, the SAS and TF141 missions hint that the Americans were really fucking up while these guys (I think they were all from the UK, correct me if I'm wrong) were busting ass to clean up their messes and get the job done.

I'm sorry, but if I'm playing an FPS and it DOESN'T have a grenade launcher I'd probably be pretty pissed off.

These aren't recurring 'trends', or 'copycat' ideas, they're STANDARDS for combat games and that's what FPS's are.
