Comprehensive settings: for everything visual, a bunch for audio, complete keymapping, accurate mouse sensitivity configuration...

And soup. Every game needs a bit of soup.
Made by you naturally.
I make a soup so vicious it'll knock a llama's teeth off!
Would it be possible for me to have a sample sometime?
If you can name the four most important things that Winston Churchill said, intentionally using a slightly higher pitch voice than usual, in a 1944 radio interview, regarding the dental hygiene of South American animals.

Then I might just consider it.

"...Toilet Plungers are necessary for preventing cavities..."

"...one must polish a wooden deck with the appropriate amount of lard..."

"...of vital importance is the gate, which MUST be made of bacon..."

"...don't forget the extraction spoon..."

A thing that every game needs is something to be played on. Because seriously i hate when something is so overrused that it becomes a cliché.

Beside the obvious like Gameplay, graphics, story, expanded single-player and overall good production I would have to specify that extra thing every genre needs. in my opinion naturally:

RTS - Joseph D. Kucan
RPG - More incentive to actually peruse the main plot (wRPG), less emo characters (jRPG)
FPS - Some fucking innovation would be nice, like the game not being call of duty
TPS - Not a sandbox, developer try that it can work miracles :D
Adventure games - Someone would have to actually make one that's good :)
Rhythm games - Songs that people actually heard before
Indie games - Would have to be a full products instead of gameplay with out plot or the other way around.
MMO - anything that would make it feel less grind deserves a Nobel price :D
Race games - Ability to race on a horse.

guess I stop here... hope I got the most interesting genres covered :D

Customizable keys for every action. I'm sick of these console ports with use and reload being the same key...

Quicksave.

Especially for console games.
Absolutely this.. and at least 10+ hours of gameplay (ambitious by today's standards, I know)

Skippable cutscenes. It doesn't sound like a big deal but the fact that theres an option makes a huge difference. Also just make it a simple button press and not something you have to go into the main menu for as it's just irritating!
More like fast forwarding a cutscene.
Many at times I mistakenly skipped the cutscenes in MGS4 when they were halfway through.
You should have seen my face when I had to watch them again.

Good storyline, interesting characters, tight controls and immersive graphics. Oh, and nice gameplay wouldn't hurt either.

All games that aren't part of some big series in which their is already an established character (eg Mario, Kirby etc.) you should be able to design what your character looks like and their name, and further personality type, other stuff if it's that type of game. Because... it's...more umm immersive I guess...

who.
actually.
does that.
this has actually happened to me dozens of times.
my computer has the power button sticking out on the top, making it very easy to accidentally hit, especially since i tend to use the computer tower as a footrest. i blame it mostly on poor design of the button placement

-All action games need health bars or counters. Even if the game absolutely MUST have regenerating health for whatever stupid reason, just make it a bar that regenerates or something; none of this red screen/blood splatter on my face bullshit.

-All shooters need ammo counters. The protagonist should also have the ability to hold AT LEAST four weapons (or at least one hyper-flexible weapon, like the shotgun thing from the freeware game Iji, or the Stranger's critter-shooting crossbow from Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath).

-All games need simple controls. There should be as few button presses between the player and their intended action as possible. Even if it's a PC exclusive with tons of buttons available to use, the game shouldn't have more functions than you could effectively have on your average console controller. Ideally, the player's hand should never have to leave the keyboard unless they're just hitting a number key to switch weapons or something like that.

-All games need a theme, even a very simple one. It doesn't matter if the game doesn't have any plot to speak of or if it lacks any written dialog; the mechanics and visuals of the game are perfectly capable of conveying a theme on their own. Just look at Flower (or even Missile Command, for those of you who saw that Extra Credits episode).

maybe don't use the tower as a footrest? :p
