One thing I noticed is that they celebrate christmas in Harry Potter.... why? Wizards dont seem to have any concept of religion, so why would they celebrate a religious festival? Do wizards in Muslim countries celebrate Ramadan?
At the risk of sounding very blasphemous, Jesus was probably a wizard. Transmuting, walking on water, making food appear, bringing back the dead, defeating death. Yeah I can see why wizards and witches would celebrate Christmas.
If you read the Night Watch series (not bad, but they get a bit stupid towards the end) they explicitly state that Jesus was a Wizard.

One thing that I've always wondered about, is in Doctor who, when Rose alters the timeline, freaky bat creatures start appearing and eating everyone, but when the Doctor does it everythings just peachy.

Seriously though, like the Doctor said: her dad's death was a fixed point in time that had to happen. The things the Doctor change don't have to happen.
But, he kept saying how it had to happen and even he isn't allowed to screw things up. Then he kinda went insane and got a visit from a scary Ood. I know she dies in the end, but what about the other two who still survived and are selling thier story to magazines. they're alive when they should be dead, just like Rose's Dad, and thier death was something that was supposed to happen.

And the whole "killing herself because humanity needs her dead to inspire her daughter thing" doesn't work ether. I don't think that dying heroiclly/mysteriously, and killing yourself back on Earth would have the same effect on her daughter. It's not exactly an inspiring result. It wasn't her death that inspired her but the way she died. You can't just say "Well she's dead know. That's all that mattered, right?" It's not like she had enough time to right a note explaining her actions and if someone read it they probably would just brush it off with presumptions that she was crazy, regardless of the fact that she should be on Mars. What with the publics ability to just brush off strange occurances in the Doctor Who universe.

I don't mean to rant at you, I love Doctor Who and Tennant's ability to act is just oustanding. Which just makes it all the more dissapointing when you think about it. It's just a shame.

Do you mean the ones from Sergej Lukianenko? Because if so I think I've missed that completely, I normally remember these things...

It was in book 4, "The Last Watch" (possibly The Final Watch). There was a discussion about most powerful and the 2 most powerful were Merlin and Jesus.

Yeah it's mentioned though they never specifically mention he is an Other. I didn't think they got stupid at all, rather refreshing novels.

If you want to point out all the plot holes in Doctor Who we will be here until it gets canceled and rebooted again(at which point we will have more plot holes to point out). Her grand daughter was always inspired by Adelaide's legacy, not the specifics of her death. Blame the writers for plot holes, not the actors.

I have wondered this myself. When you graduate you are allowed to use magic outside the school so couldn't you just sell yourself to the highest bidder and get sent to the front line? Although how I would do a magical hostile take over is use those things they have in Azkaban, the dementors or something. I would also settle for a really flashy show of flying shadows.

Weird, I remember Merlin but not Jesus. I'll believe you anyway since I don't have the last two books here at the moment.
Good books, have to get them back soon.

We all do it, we are reading a book or watching a film, and no matter what the premise, there are always moments where you think "Thats imposssible!" or "Why the hell would that happen?". You dont say anything, because hey, its a film about magical pigeons fighting stan riding cthulu and nobody would care. But what are those moments for you? Even if your just reading to much into the material, go ahead and share!

One thing I noticed is that they celebrate christmas in Harry Potter.... why? Wizards dont seem to have any concept of religion, so why would they celebrate a religious festival? Do wizards in Muslim countries celebrate Ramadan?
You do realize that nobody gives a fuck about religious origins of Christmas which aren't even Christian, for that matter. The true roots come from a number of older religions, Christians just hijacked it. Yule, for example.

And then again, it's a commercial holiday people do just because of tradition. That's all there is to it. Same thing with Valentine's day, by celebrating it - which happens in most western countries, you by no means have to believe in Roman gods, just because Cupid is one. Nor do you have to care about some shmuck who got his ass killed and his name slapped on a day in a true Christian fashion. (And who's got nothing to do with love, whatsoever. At least Cupid makes a good mascot because he's one of the roman gods concerned with erotic love and all that.)

So, no, Christmas is not a religious festival anymore. And even if it was, considering that Harry Potter is just a book, it could simply be the author trying to establish connection between the characters and the readers.

I liked the series and it was a great idea overall, but the final book felt like the author was desperately trying to tie up all the loose ends in both the books and the films which got a little annoying.

Sadly I lent my copy to a mate who then decided to lend it to someone so I don't have a copy. I'm just going on memory so if it turns out I'm talking out my arse, I apologise :)

If we're going to rag on Harry Potter, then why haven't wizards discovered democracy? Or... guns? Because, you know, in the third book, when Sirius has a gun, he manages to frighten the entire wizarding community. And the Minister of Magic is chosen ... but not by the British Prime Minister? So... who chooses him? What about electing people?
It's been like a decade since the time I've read the 3rd book... But as far as I can remember, the wizard community wasn't frightened because Sirius had a gun. I'm pretty sure he didn't have a gun, that was just an excuse they made so they could also put up wanted posters of him in the muggle world. Because saying that "escaped prisoner/murderer armed with a magic wand' wouldn't exactly create that much impact in the muggle world. Or something like that. So they just substituted the wand with a gun, making him "dangerous and armed" in regards to the muggle world too.

And I imagine the wizards had some kind of democracy, I mean, if they didn't choose the Minister of Magic, who else would? I think I can remember mentions of electing people throughout the books, although it's been years since I've read them.

Don't sweat it, Jesus is mentioned in maybe one line as a passing comment. Supposedly another 0-Point Magician like Merlin.

Christmas was originally a pagan festival, it actually makes more sense for wizards to celebrate it than Christians (who stole it, or more correctly renamed it because the church could not get people to stop celebrating it.)

I'm pretty sure something about, you know, completely erasing people's memories (or, for that matter, killing them) with just a word kind of helps.

If my memory's right, the wizards in Harry Potter lived in almost complete secrecy, so, uhm, yeah.

And your logic should apply to any horror movie creature, for that matter. People are simply afraid of supernatural, and supernatural in this case can be anything said people don't know about or don't approve of... Or simply told to hate. /cue witch burnings.

Continuing the Harry Potter theme, aside from the fact Magic in books does my head in because it never sticks to its own rules, the entire Wizarding community would have the maths skills of an 11 year old.
Thats another thing, they dont go to school until their 11?
and why dont you just learn the killing spell and fuck shit up anytime someone screws with you they put the power to control reality in the hands of kids
They gave a time travel device to a little girl so that she doesn't miss classes... REALLY?! But never consider to use it to stop an evil wizard, or save the life of one of the most powerful wizards and defence against said evil wizard.

What bothers me is that if someone goes over a cliff into water, people always assume that they're dead.
Then said presumed dead always comes back.
Unless you're the smoke monster in the LAME ending of Lost.
Ahhh, but he didn't go into water. He was

shot by Kate, and his immortality was already gone by that point. Plus Jack had stabbed him, and he cracked his head open when he fell and landed on his skull. His body was there for all to see on the cliff before it got washed away, so he was definitely dead :D

You do have a point about the plot holes and I wasn't blaming the actors. I was just saying it was a shame about the plot holes when you have such brilliant acting. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. I'm going to stop whining about this now.

No, they describe the gun in a way to explain it to a wizard, so he probably had an actual gun. Remember Sirius was a lot smarter than the others, so he would know having a gun would help. And still - guns. Shot people. Tanks. There is only so much magic and a tactical missile strike could fix most problems.

I would imagine they did have a democracy except they pretty clearly don't. The Harry Potter books fail at realistically combining a fantasy world and reality

The ending of Dead or Alive.

It just...makes no sense, whatsoever. Even considering how totally insane Takeshi Miike is, it's still weird.

Warning: Don't watch this if you plan to see the film, it's a massive spoiler. I think.

Anyway, bear with me on this, the film, up to this point, has been a serious if very stylized gangster flick, with a believable plot, and no especially mental moments. The moments that are mental (the crime boss drowning the woman in her own diarrhea) are at least plausible.

But then, at the end of the film, Ryuichi (the Chinese gangster in the car) and Jojima (the cop who attacks them) face off, and then....this happens.
