For some odd reason people assume I'm gay . It Doesn't offend me , but i do find it odd , its not that I act or look efeminitive on the contrary I'm rather burly .

Lots of people assume that I'm unfriendly, sad, or (once) even depressed when they first meet me because I don't smile much and am usually quite quiet and reserved. It's quite nice to see their reactions when talk to me and I turn out not to be a total emo dickhead.

One girl I work with must have asked me, with genuine concern, if I was okay about 20 times before she finally accepted that I'm just not a fan of idle chit-chat, and the reason I wasn't talking much was I just didn't have anything worthwhile to say.

That people always think my name is William. My given name is Billy, and everyone always assumes my name is actually William.

That I'm shy because I don't talk much sometimes, but sometimes I just don't really have anything to say or I'm thinking about something. Also people assume I had some sort of sheltered upbringing. I don't know where people get this idea. Probably having something to do with me coming from a rough area but don't have a particularity rough accent

Easiest way to get rid of those is the tell them that my dad was doing sensitive work in the police; they're not allowed to get details then (plus it's true).

Though if they're really being dicks I tell then that I can't give personal details as I work in a vivisection lab, the reactions are usually priceless...

OT: Only ever had this on trips to the US, but people assuming that because I have a facial disfigurement I either need their plastic surgeon's or laywer's details. I'm well aware of how I look, I don't give a shit, and I don't need it pointing out to me.

That everyone is deeply interested in music in some form. So many times a well meaning person trying to break the ice with me will go "What kind of music do you like?", "What bands do you listen to" or some such thing. I have to reply "I don't listen to music" to which their response is typically something along the lines of ??!?.
I thought I was alone! Everyone gets all freaked out by that. I've chosen to say Classic Rock now as its my favorite, not that I ever listen to it but when its in a movie or something its alright. People who ask me about my taste in music tend to not know much that isn't from the last five years so I can get away with not knowing much too. It works pretty well. Otherwise they just keep asking me questions over and over again because they don't believe that I don't listen to music. They think I mean I don't listen to it often, or I only listen to it on the radio, or some other way of justifying it.

As for the OP's problem, I think the fact that a lot of sites tend to be based in the US (I believe the escapist is) and most of the news stories on them tend to relate to the US, people just assume that the people on it are from the US until they learn better.
I use to lie as well because I noticed a lot of the time the person honestly wouldn't believe me and would think I was trying to shut down conversation or something. Ironically I used classic rock as well since it is what my brother and father both listen to the most often and thus I'd at least know a few band names/songs to spurt out. However I've since stopped doing that because it just felt too deceitful. I've since been immediately steering the conversation to something else "I don't really listen to music, but pie... pie is great."

This.
You're not alone, I really don't care about charity, or giving in general, and since I live in a Christian society, and I'm an atheist, I get quite a few ugly looks from assuming people.
Also, people assume I'm religious just because I attend a church school, and then look upon me with horror when I shatter that particular façade.

That just because I'm tall I love and/or play Basketball. I mean, really? My height dictates what I do and don't like? How stupid can you get?

And that because I like to do well in school I have no fun outside of school. Those people I hate with a passion. So I want to have a good chance to get into a good college, that means I have no life outside school?

So I hear you live in the US...

I really hate that people feel compelled to talk lots in social situations, and that spending a bit of time alone is seen as abnormal. I also really hate any press coverage of mental illness or science, because as a rule of thumb, they're both fucking abysmal.

Being a bloke and from Manchester, other blokes usually assume I love football (I don't) and would love an unsolicited conversation about it (I wouldn't). It's especially annoying in taxis: 'You watch the match last night mate?' 'I don't watch football'. Cue ten minutes of uncomfortable silence.

Everybody who meets me seems to assume I'm either a musician, a drug-user, or both. In fact, I am neither. :/

At work people assume when I am not talking I am in a bad mood. Well, there is a time to talk when you work and a time not to. I am very talkative at work, yeah, but when it's balls to the wall busy Im not going to say much. 'Cause you know... I am busy. working.

People automatically assume I can speak Chinese fluently. Sorry to break it to you but I'm a BBC (British born Chinese) so Chinese was never my first language! (Before you asked, my parent didn't enroll me in this Chinese speaking school as a kid and it kind of too difficult to learn it now but I can lived with that).

A lot of people consider William and Billy to be the same name. It doesn't help that a lot of people named William do tend to go by Bill or Billy.

Nothing really anymore, but back in college, people used to constantly assume I was gay because I wasn't comfortable talking about my sex life with people I barely knew. I don't even understand how that works.
