I hate when people assume that exercising/eating healthy is only for people who are trying to lose weight.

I hate when people assume I'm quiet when I've only just met them and am not very talkative around them. That's right I'm not shy I'm judging you. To be honest I'm extremely weird and talkative once you know me but I'm not great at immediately befriending someone, it takes a while for me to decide whether I like them or not

I know the feeling bro. My name is Jerry and everyone assumes it's short for Gerald or Jerome or even Jeremy.

People assume I'm from Ireland a lot. Probably from my name. If people hear my name before they hear me say anything they'll be like "Are you Irish?" To which I respond yeah (with my "heavy" Mid-western American accent). I just assume they mean ethnically, as in are you Irish-american?

Then they get all disappointed because I no got's a cool accent :(

People also assume that I'm an atheist a lot because of my heavy interest in science & Philosophy and a general avoidance of openly talking about religion (I'm Catholic damnit stop asking me).

Do you usually have a deadpan sense of humor? Or are they just asshats? My dad is weird because he can say the most insane sounding thing you've ever heard and say it with such a straight face that'll you'll be like "Wait, What? Are you serious?"

It makes me laugh 'cause you almost kind of have to know my dad to know if he's actually joking.

Maybe you're too awesome of a comedian for your own good :)

People automatically assume I can speak Chinese fluently. Sorry to break it to you but I'm a BBC (British born Chinese) so Chinese was never my first language! (Before you asked, my parent didn't enroll me in this Chinese speaking school as a kid and it kind of too difficult to learn it now but I can lived with that).
I have a similar problem. I am hispanic, born in the American Southwest, but people, I DO NOT SPEAK SPANISH AT ALL FOR FUCK'S SAKE. I am not in tune with that part of my heritage at all. To the point that I have an active hate against the Spanish language and am one of the few hispanics to have no problem with Sherrif Joe Arpaio.

same here, but I still think being laughed at when you're serious (as a stand-up comic) is better than not being laughed at when you're joking

As a foreigner living in Japan I have to deal with a lot of assumptions. People assume I am american just for being white (I am Swedish). If you dont know where someone is from, dont assume a nationality, ask!
Also people always assume that I dont speak Japanese and that my native language is English. In Europe there are LOADS of people who's native language isn't English. Sure I speak English fluently, but for all they know I might just as well have been from a country in Europe where people often dont become that proficient in English, and in that case Japanese may very well be the language I am more proficient at, thus speaking English to me could very well have been a language I simply did not understand. This of course boils down to being assumed as being an American. When, around new years, everyone thinks it is extraordinarily funny to say "happy new year" to me in broken English, I get so tired of it after a while. I realize they are just trying to be nice, but English isn't my native language any more than Japanese is, so either learn to say it in Swedish or say it in Japanese /Rant over.

I see a lot of responses that I can relate to hah, strange.

People usually wrongly assume that I'm gay, which leads to some strange situations sometimes. I guess it's because I'm not good with the ladies and prefer just to be by myself most of the time.

This cropped up very recently. People who assume that only male cows have horns; both male and female cows have horns. Only female adult cows have udders (read as boobs), they develop after the first calf (baby) is delivered. Most female cows are dehorned because it cuts down on injuries, pain, bleeding, and sudden discovery of a large 4-6 inch hunk of keratin sticking into your body.

People that assume using the phrase " it was all but gone" or "it was all but destroyed" is okay or makes any SENSE at all! Stop using this phrase in writing! Blarhh!

People assume I give a damn.

These annoying people who stop you in the street looking for money for X or Y charity assume I care about what they're trying to help.
^This. Also that I'm 15 (For fuck's sake I'm 27 ._.) and for some reason people forget that I read and assume that I don't and therefore when I talk books or show up somewhere with a book they get shocked and usually come back with "But I assumed you didn't read".

Oh also the assumptions I get cause I live in California and (mostly) identify as female.
"You mean you DON'T know how to surf?"
"How can you hate the beach? Don't all Californians love the beach?"
"Why are you so pale if you live in California? Shouldn't you have a tan like everyone else?"
"Oh my god! You're smart? I thought all California girls were airheads" (That one really gets me because when I let my hair go back to it's natural blonde colour instead of dying it people automatically go into patronising mode with me and assume I know nothing of what I'm talking about and treat me like I'm 5)

Ok so recently I was going through various comment sections and forums and time and time again I notice that many US citizens tend to assume everyone else is from the US. This baffles me I don't get why I only ever see it in people from the US. It drives me insane it is like these people assume the rest of the world doesn't exist or is so obsolete they don't get the net. How about you guys what do people assume that drives you insane?
I think that may be because for the most part, American media don't acknowledge the rest of the world as part of its audience. Forums and online games are the first place I had much contact with Europeans while in the US. I met a few more while in college, but forums are still the main thing.

It may be different in Europe because, aside from the UK, you share more borders with each other and have that whole EU thing going on, so you HAVE to acknowledge the presence of other countries. We just have Canada and Mexico. One is like a shy roommate that stays in its room all day and is easily forgotten for months at a time, the other we have a complex and awkward history and present with and try not to think about too much.

OT: It drives me nuts when people assume things about what a group believes or wants without actually learning the first thing about said group, or assuming that since I like or dislike one thing that a group likes, that I like or dislike everything that group likes.

I also dislike it when advertisers assume I give a damn about their campaigns. No, your product is not that special, your ad is not that important. No one needs to know about your DishTV offer who isn't going to look it up themselves. Quit being a marketer and do something useful.
Australia. We dont share our boarders with anyone, yet perfectly knowledgeable of the rest of the world. My sisters went to America earlier this year and everyone thought they meant Austria or something and seemed surpised that we actaually have a cultural over here and weren't riding around in Kangaroo's living in the woods.

Do they actually teach Geography in in the U.S.A?

People assume because of my long hair and beard and the fact that I listen to heavy metal that I'm an anti-social Satanist drug-user who spontaneously stabs people. Also, people assume I'm gay for supporting gay marriage. It baffles me that some people actually think this.

Nothing really anymore, but back in college, people used to constantly assume I was gay because I wasn't comfortable talking about my sex life with people I barely knew. I don't even understand how that works.

This is lolz for me because people always assume I'm straight just because I don't have a lisp, talk about shopping and fashion every 5 seconds, or flirt with every guy I see. It also might have to do with the fact I like to keep my private affairs private and don't state my sexual orientation to random people unless it's relevant. Most straight people assume everyone they meet is straight unless it is painfully obvious they are gay, or they are explicitly told someone is gay. I guess most people just don't feel comfortable around someone unless they know if their sexual orientation, or it's uncomfortable to be around people who aren't attracted to the same people they are. Personally I think it's rude to assume someone's sexual orientation if it's not relevant to the situation.

That just because I'm tall I love and/or play Basketball. I mean, really? My height dictates what I do and don't like? How stupid can you get?
This also applies to broad guys and football. I remember this one person, a stranger who in the given situation I had to make small-talk with, asked me what position I played. When I told them I didn't play any sport, the obvious transition was to ask if I worked out, which is the more reasonable of the two, and in this case, the more accurate one; however, there are people who are simply born with a large build (I was a milder case of this).

EDIT:

Oh, and there's also the other followup:

"Do you play football?"
"No."
"Well you should."

Well I should? Why, because I have that one advantage, I'll be great at the sport? Because I'm built like this, I'll like the sport? Fucking dumb.

Well the reason behind that is a large portion of people online in video games or the what not ARE from the US. If you are sitting on your PC in Estonia you're sure as hell not going to go ahead and assume everyone else is from Estonia, in fact you probably expect you're talking to people in the US.

People who say "I'm offended" and expect me to give a damn.

Also, because I lean towards to conservatism I'm apparently a racist, misogynistic, homophobic asshole (people love to fling around labels)
