The double side coin of stuff about our operating systems. Ranging from things like updates, to limitations, to just plain oddities in the OS it self, and things the OS does unusually well. Basically all of the positives and negatives.

I use Lubuntu(the LXDE version of Ubuntu) as my Primary operating system, with a partition for LXDE Fedora, and an unused partition for Windows 7(too lazy to do the install as it stands.)

In both versions of my flavor of Linux I've run into some annoying issues. One is due to my graphics card and a bug in all Linux flavors I cannot use proprietary drivers for my GPU. Nvidia X-server drivers just cause my OS to lock up when the video card is used. Also in Lubuntu I get nearly a hundred megs of updates several times a week. Which causes me to often need to purge old software, OS components, and drivers. The plus side is that I need WINE to run windows programs, and it runs old Windows 95 and 98 games like a champ, where most OSes require massive tweaks to the games to make them run. The downside to WINE is it's really slow on newer windows games. Fedora though holds the second issue. With my Grub boot tool it sometimes fails to show up on the list.

I have different Linux flavors running on multiple partitions on various other PCs I have too. They're all fantastic, and they all share the issue of large and frequent updates. The flip side is that they're all blazing fast. Also anymore when I get a video card, proprietary drivers, and the OS to cooperate I have wider and wider access to games through steam as they've learned that Linux users are a large part of their market base. Steam will even run WINE if I force it to download a windows only game. Though I do have to force it to do the download with some Linux trickery.

I use Windows 8.1. It neither greatly annoys nor greatly pleases me.

It's just kind of there.

...I want Windows 7 back.

I use Mac as my main OS. As pretty much everyone knows, it has a nice interface and aesthetic design, so it is more pleasing experience than Windows and most Linux distributions. I've even managed to get the command line tools to approximately the same functionality as Linux, but it's pretty much a jumbled mess that's nowhere near as easy to use as Linux. Still, I like the Unix environment and how easy it is to switch between Mac and Linux. It's also nice how much Mac handles and offers, which generally makes things a smoother, quicker experience than if I had to focus all the extra stuff with keeping a computer functioning well (and properly).

But, anyways, I have run Ubuntu a lot lately and have begun experimenting with some other Linux distributions. I imagine that, sooner or later, I'll be switching over to Linux as my primary system. So long as the interface isn't too much worse than Mac, I'm significantly more comfortable with a Linux environment than I am in Mac, and at least Ubuntu meets that requirement. I also have a couple friends that have heavily encouraged me to use openSUSE and Arch Linux, so I'll at least give them a decent amount of time before judging them.

Outside of that, I pretty much always keep Kali around, but I'll never use it as a main OS. It is just a good one to have for when I'm doing security-related stuff either for class or for the cybersecurity club at my university. I'll also likely always keep a Windows ISO around to run as a VM just in case I can't get a Windows program working with Wine, which has happened at least once already.

I use Windows 8.1, and the only thing that annoys me is that it forces a restart eventually once updated. But its not really a big deal as long as that update doesn't cause a fault of hardware.
I have no other issues with 8.1 and have not run into any problems, I wish other folks had the same experiences I have honestly.

My sentiments exactly!

Other than that, I keep forgetting that I even have apps on my Start "thingy"... so, interpret that as either an annoyance or a pleasure because I don't fucking know the answer to that...

Well, since a number of the posts here are about Windows 8 sucking ass and wanting Windows 7, I...don't have much to complain about. I have Windows 7. I have Ultimate, in fact, because when the laptop was built, for some reason they had that or basic and screw basic. The laptop's a splurge-top anyway, so no big deal. Really, it's been fine and I'm not changing this OS until Microsoft makes one worth having which...doesn't look to be anytime soon.

Using Ubuntu Linux.

Positive is being able to use a decent command line, the fact it is free, and the fact that it is not Windows 8.

Negative is there is a bug which means it occasionally freezes up for a few seconds - slightly annoying but not annoying enough that I've ever devoted serious time to fixing it. Also that I can't play mainstream games on it.

8.1 is basically one big annoyance but I got around this by copy pasting a shortcut to literally everything I may ever use to desktop. Never have to wave my mouse around the corner of the screen trying desperately to make the thing recognise that I want the menu open again. Better than 8.0 though.

The fact that I'm being forcibly upgraded to Windows 10 by it being a free update to my perfectly servicable Windows 7 install.

Seriously...thats really going to suck. Especially since its the only way to get in on DX12 cause they're doing the usual lack of backwards compatibility with previous OS versions that they did with DX11.

As for me? I'm on 8.1 and I'm on Android. With the newest version of android on my phone, my only complaint is that it gobbles up battery a bit fast. I've moved my charger to the bedroom for overnight charging, which is only gonna harm it more, sadly.

As for Windows? I can accept change and adapt. I aint got any problems there. Kind of wish I had a sandbox though.

Its not bad enough for me to want to bother. But thanks! It was more a minor annoyance, but it actually forced me into better habits.

I use Windows 7 because my PC isn't a tablet. It's sexy and beautiful. I can do whatever I want with it and nothing is incompatible. What, negatives? Umm, it doesn't give me handjobs, does that count?

My laptop has windows 8 though. If I didn't need it for Uni I'd smash the fucking thing.
Wanna use the search bar? Move the mouse to the top left, move it out SLIGHTLY and down a bit, but not out too much or stupid menu will disappear.
Want a "Computer" shortcut? Why would you want that you nerd, when you can use our WONDERFUL ANAL FISTINGLY GOOD SIDEBAR FUCK YOU MICROSOFT YOU PACK OF FETUS EATING, COCKMONGL-
Or you can always use Metro, y'know, that thing that nobody fucking asked for, that replaced an easier, smoother, faster, and more reliable Windows 7 interface.

I'm curious about Windows 10 since they only don't fuck up every second time, but they've skipped 9 so maybe we're all fucked.

Windows 7 64 bit, Home Premium because i'm a cheap bastard.

Does what I need it to.

Sometimes things are filed in stupid places.

That is all.

I could use Linux or even make myself a rather fetching Hackintosh but windows runs more games with less hassle so I'll keep doing that. Prolly upgrade to windows 10.

It doesn't always crash.

But when it does, it crashes like a *****.

Windows 7 is usually reliable, but if your computer's not up to scratch, it's... disagreeable.

Windows 8.0, and I'm fine with it. I regard it as a better OS than 7 because of its improved kernel.
The start menu needs to die of already but since I have any important shortcut on my taskbar it's easily avoidable.

My old laptop runs 7, and after the amount of hours I've spent using 8, 7 feels kinda alien to me.

This is a bit tricky since I'm an IT admin in a heterogenous environment, I use pretty much every operating system daily, to the extent that I barely register what OS I'm on any more.

At home I'm using Windows 10 on my desktop and laptop and Ubuntu on my home server. Windows 10 is pretty damn nice so far, my only annoyance is that a persistent bug on each update that wrecks Mail, Contacts & Calendar so I have to keep reinstalling it. Aside from that it's pretty damn good actually. There's a few bugs around game support but I think that's at least partially the beta drivers I'm using.

Ubuntu on my server is pretty great, I'm chasing down a persistent talloc error but that's an application I am running, not the OS.

At work I use windows 8.1, Windows 7 and Server 2008-2012r2 and SuSe.

I'm actually not so fond of 7 any more, I wish it'd display more information up front rather than requiring applications open. I also don't like having to scoot around a piddly little menu in the corner to find stuff. 8.1 is pretty great with Desktops installed, it just works, starts up fast, gives me a nice big VPN menu to click on and generally keeps out of my way. SuSe I don't get on with, its package manager doesn't seem very good at resolving dependencies, I don't like that it monkeys with where all the Apache config is and I tend to find the packages are a little outdated.

Press and hold the windows key and then press 's'. Practically everything in 8.1 can be accessed with a keyboard shortcut. In addition if you want to get to Control Panel or something quickly you can right click over the Start Menu hot corner to get a list of useful links roughly analogous to what was contained in the right hand side of the Windows 7 start menu.

Windows 8 here. I don't like the layout, nor the overuse of Apps. Come on Microsoft, I don't want to use your shitty music app, I got iTunes. But is isn't as bad as people say it is. The only constant annoyance is when you move your mouse to the bottom, right-hand corner and it minimizes all of your taps for some stupid reason.

Personally, what I find annoying is when you go to change PC settings or something like that, it then opens another kind of tab that doesn't appear on the taskbar and is only visible when you hover the mouse to that corner.
It's especially annoying as I tend to have my taskbar on the side of the screen rather then at the bottom so I have to hover over the time and date :/

Thanks, I'll try to remember that next time before considering it's destruction.
